Sinulog Festival | Cebu
Celebration
Sino-Indiana Festival is a grand event in Cebu, one of the most attended festivals in the Philippines, attracting millions of locals and tourists from around the world. Although it falls on the third weekend of January, the celebrations last for more than a week. Locals hold images of the infant Jesus in the streets and dance the unique "Sino-Indiana Wave" dance, with processions stretching for kilometers, creating a joyous atmosphere.
On the day of the festival, processions from Cebu and surrounding cities gather. During the day, drum and bugle corps, elaborate floats, various street dances, and large-scale puppets dominate the streets. At night, there are fireworks displays and carnival parties. The celebrations last all day, rich in national color, lively and never dull. Major traffic arteries in Cebu are closed to allow the processions to celebrate. The booming drums guide the dance troupes, forming a flowing river (Sulog in Filipino), explaining the origin of the local name SINULOG.
Cebu's Feast of the Holy Infant originated in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480-1521) led the Spanish fleet to Cebu, declaring it Spanish territory. He then guided the King (Rajah Humabon), Queen (Amihan), and the people of Cebu to Catholicism. The King and Queen were baptized and renamed Carlo and Juana, respectively. After Magellan's death, Cebu incorporated its local animal worship traditions into Catholic festival activities, forming the original prototype of the local Feast of the Holy Infant. Cebu's traditional dance is the highlight of the festival. It depicts the history of the Spanish colonists presenting the image of the Holy Infant to the Queen through a dance drama. A dancer playing Queen Juana holds the image of the Holy Infant (pictured below) to drive away evil spirits and bless the people with peace and health.
