This course will introduce participants to drawing and painting portraits and is suitable for beginners and those with some experience. You will be given an introduction to the methods, techniques and ways of looking needed to create a likeness. Basic drawing and painting materials including acrylic paint, paper and canvas will be provided. Please bring your own acrylic paint brushes. You are welcome to bring any additional materials that you would like to use. *Please note, oil painting will not be covered in this course. Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9.30am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. We've had to increase our prices in 2025 because of the increase in Eventbrite fees, the minimum wage and Employers National Insurance. Tickets now cost £10 (including VAT) BUT in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7.30am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. Hey there, I’m Lily - an ‘elder emo’ musician with a love for putting a unique, softer spin on the heavier tracks that shaped a generation. Known for turning unexpected songs from bands like Slipknot, Blink-182 and Taking Back Sunday through to Sleep Token, Bad Omens and Korn, into ‘stealth rock’ acoustic renditions, I take these typically heavy songs and strip them back to focus on the melody and lyrics. Usually, you’ll find me at badass weddings singing for couples who grew up on the emo, alt, and metal scenes saying I Do to the songs they hold close without upsetting their elder relatives. After many requests from people saying they’d love to see me live, whether they’re already married, wedding-free by choice, or just craving an intimate concert experience, I decided to hit the road for my first UK tour. VALENTINES SPECIAL ....... MAKE A RING WITH YOUR LOVED ONE Learn how to design and create your very own bespoke ring in Brightons hidden beer store, The Well. In the workshop you will be taught a range of techniques and processes demonstrated by Mollie Paling, from FLUX Jewellery. In the 2.5 hour workshop you will carve and sculpt your own wax ring using a variety of tools to explore and experiment with mark making, forming shape and surface texture. Don’t worry, everyone will start with a test piece allowing time to familiarise yourself with the material and methods of making. Once comfortable you will start to create your own ring individually inspired by your own ideas and personal taste. The ring can really be as dramatic or simple as you desire. By the end of your session you’ll have a finished wax ring ready for casting. After the class the rings are then sent and cast in 100% recycled silver ( or recycled gold if desired, cost difference will be explained) Then polished up in our workshop and returned within 3 weeks either by collection or post to your door. After a short break we will share repertoire – a different extract from Theatre of Dreams each day.  Please note: both courses will cover the same content. These courses are open to dancers, teachers and dance students – anyone looking to enrich and deepen their practice or training, and of course anyone interested in getting to know more about our work. You must be 18 years of age minimum, and we warmly welcome all ages upwards of that. Whether you are new to Hofesh's work, or you have already danced with us before, there will be something for everyone to discover during the week.       Each course will culminate on Day 4 with a run-through of some of the repertoire learnt throughout the course.
