Join NVCA and Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy as we plant trees along the Nottawasaga River, near Angus. Come out and join your community to help plant native trees and shrubs. Planting trees will create wildlife habitat and increase the local tree canopy, which will enhance community resilience to climate change. What to Expect • An orientation and tree planting tutorial • This is a moderately physically demanding project involving walking, lifting, shoveling and walking on uneven surfaces • This event will take place rain or shine but will be rescheduled if there is extreme weather. • 3 hours of outdoor activity • A reminder email will be sent out the day prior to the event. Please monitor your email for additional updates, e.g. severe weather events. Minimum age requirements Volunteers must be 15 years of age or older to participate. This event is not suitable for children as there is a steep hike and planting will be near water. Please note we will be working within 15 m of the Nottawasaga River. In this area, the river is very deep, so we ask volunteers to maintain a safe distance from the water. This event requires a 1km hike to access the site, over fairly steep terrain. Please wear sturdy shoes. Remember to bring · Please dress for the weather! Consider bringing a rain jacket, hat, etc. depending on weather conditions · Gardening/work gloves (Extra gloves available) · Extra water and snacks · Sunscreen, hat, bug repellent · Participants must wear closed-toed shoes that can get muddy · Backpack or bag is recommended since we may be doing a short hike to the site · A friend or family member: it’s more fun together! Washrooms There are no washrooms available. Please use the washroom before you arrive. There are many gas stations or coffee shops in Baxter (5 minute drive) or Angus (10 minute drive). Be Tick Aware · Wear light-coloured clothing to make ticks easier to spot. · Wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, and closed-toe footwear. Tuck your shirt into your pants and tuck your pants into your socks. This can help prevent ticks from crawling onto your skin where they can feed. · Permethrin-treated clothing may provide protection against ticks and mosquitoes. · Visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit's website for more information Students · Remember to bring your community service volunteer form! Photo Disclaimer · By attending this event you acknowledge that photos & video will be taken for future promotional use. Donate to Our Project · NVCA fundraises for all of our ecological restoration projects. Please consider donating to our projects through Canada Helps . Don't forget to select "Watershed Restoration and Rehabilitation" under "Apply your donation to a fund set up by this charity". Contact Info: Laura Wensink, lwensink@nvca.on.ca, 705-796-3014 This event is hosted in partnership with Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy and funded by HJ McDonald, Department of Fisheries and Oceans - CNFASAR and Canada Helps.
