Celebration
The Medellin Flower Festival, a cultural beacon in Colombia, will this year take place from August 1 to 10, 2025. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular Medellin tourist events in Antioquia, attracting people from all over the world. This annual festival is full of tradition and color, a reflection of the city's culture and the spirit of its people. The festival not only showcases the rich floral heritage of the region, but also promotes community pride and artistic expression. Origins and Evolution of the Festival The origins of the Flower Festival can be traced back to 1957, when Arturo Uribe of the Medellin Tourism Promotion Office proposed it. He suggested providing a platform for local flower growers, mainly from the Santa Elena region, to showcase their floral creations. These flower growers, known as "flower chair people", use traditional wooden structures called "flower chairs" to transport and display their floral art. The festival has since evolved, from a local gathering to an internationally recognized event that embodies the cultural and social spirit of Antioquia. Celebrating the Flower Chair People: The Heart and Soul of the Festival The highlight and closing event of the festival is the Flower Chair People Parade, an emotional and picturesque procession where participants wear flower chairs laden with flowers. The parade not only showcases the artistic creativity and dedication of the Flower Chair People, but also pays homage to their ancestral heritage of flower cultivation. Each floral creation is a narrative of personal and collective history, meticulously crafted in their nurseries. The parade is a vivid expression of local pride and is highly anticipated by national and international visitors. The Vitality of Music and Artistic Showcase Music plays a key role in the festival, with performances ranging from traditional Colombian music to modern pop influences. The city comes alive with live performances in various neighborhoods’ music stages, transforming Medellín into an expansive concert venue. In addition, the festival features a parade of classic and antique cars, with vintage cars adorned with themed decorations that travel through the city, echoing the festival’s floral theme while promoting charitable causes. A Celebration of Cultural Events The festival’s rich schedule includes numerous cultural events that go beyond the floral displays. Art exhibitions, botanical workshops and interactive performances are spread across the city, offering attendees a well-rounded cultural experience. The orchid exhibition at the Medellin Botanical Garden is a must-see, showcasing stunning orchids and other exotic flowers that symbolize the region’s ecological diversity. Interact with the City: Tours and Sightseeing For those keen to explore Medellin’s historical and cultural landmarks, guided tours are available. These tours offer an in-depth look at the city’s architectural wonders and historic sites, such as the Plaza Botero and Cerro Nutibara. For a more personal exploration, self-guided tours allow visitors to wander Medellin at their own pace, discover hidden gems and experience the local way of life.
