Join the AFA in exploring the rich history of activism and the development of Mississippi's first modern art collection at Tougaloo College. As the AFA touring exhibition, Art and Activism at Tougaloo College, concludes its national tour, a unique program will delve into the deep roots of solidarity and integration at Tougaloo College. The program will highlight the diverse group of individuals who came together to form a remarkable collection of modern art. Dr. Doris Browne, an alumnus and collector, will provide a special first-hand account. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the emancipation of the soul and the surrender of narrow to wide horizons, as expressed by Fred L. Brownlee, the general corresponding secretary of the American Missionary Association in 1946. In 1963, the New York Art Committee for Tougaloo College established Mississippi's first collection of modern art. Led by renowned art writer and critic Dore Ashton, the committee transformed Tougaloo College into a hub of European and New York School modernism, fulfilling the founders' vision of an interracial oasis with the fine arts as the focus. The program will feature Turry M. Flucker, Vice President of Collections and Partnerships for the Terra Foundation for American Art and former Director and Curator of the Tougaloo College Art Collections. Dr. Doris Browne, President and CEO of Browne and Associates, LLC, and a Tougaloo alumna, will also speak. This free program is open to the public with registration.
