Lara M. Evans and Manuela Well-Off-Man, renowned art historians and curators, will be hosting a thought-provoking discussion on the Institute of American Indian Arts’ (IAIA) exhibition, "Action/Abstraction Redefined." This highly anticipated event will take place in New York City at the prestigious New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, located at 8 West 8th Street. During the conversation, Evans and Well-Off-Man will delve into the exploration of Native artists in the experimental art movements of the twentieth century. These groundbreaking artists have not only contributed to the language of contemporary Native art but have also redefined the very concept of abstraction itself. Lara M. Evans, a member of the Cherokee Nation, brings her extensive knowledge and expertise as an art historian based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her impressive credentials include a PhD from the University of New Mexico, as well as her recent curatorial project at the renowned Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Invitational 2023: Sharing Honors and Burdens. Currently, Dr. Evans serves as the Vice President of Programs for First Peoples Fund, where she is dedicated to building arts infrastructure for Native communities. Manuela Well-Off-Man, an art historian and chief curator at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, will also be sharing her valuable insights. With a PhD in art history from the Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany, and a master's degree in art history, archaeology, and pedagogy from the University of Cologne, Germany, Well-Off-Man has curated numerous national and international contemporary Native American art exhibitions and authored a plethora of catalog essays and magazine articles.
