It seems that the Dominican presence began in the early 16th century. But it was many years later in the following century that completion was reached. Early Baroque is the predominant style of the Church. However Mudejar influence is also well represented. All resulting in a lovely presence.

I love staying in convents and monasteries and was thrilled when I spotted this on TA. The building is a bit hard to find (would perhaps benefit from better signage) but the welcome by the multinational nuns couldn’t have been warmer or kinder. My little cell had a single bed, a window and a WC/shower. It had an AC/heating unit I didn’t try. I suspect it might get hot in the summer but at this time of year it was perfect. Unlike similar establishments there are no curfews. All for 35 euros for a single - and the money goes to a worthy cause!

El convento Madre de Dios de Carmona se encuentra situado en la calle de su mismo nombre, contiguo a las Casas del Cabildo antiguo, en pleno corazón del centro histórico de la ciudad. Parece que la fundación de la comunidad dominica se sitúa a principios del siglo XVI. En 1520 comenzó a configurarse el edificio, integrándose en la trama urbanística del viejo casco medieval. Llega a su extensión máxima en el siglo XVII. La parte más interesante del convento es la iglesia. Consta de una sola nave cubierta por un artesonado mudéjar. El retablo mayor es obra de Jacinto Pimentel y fue concluido en 1632. La iglesia está decorada con pinturas, todas ellas enmarcadas en yeserías barrocas. Agradecer a la hermana Inés que nos realizó una visita guiada por todo el templo, hospedería y claustro.
