Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and one of the main gateways to the national parks and nature found throughout the state. With an interesting history shaped by Native Americans and explorers, there’s plenty to see and do in this charming city. Best Time to Visit Cheyenne

Cheyenne has a relatively small downtown area, and most visitors are drawn to the city because of the variety of outdoor activities that they can take part in on the outskirts. Temperatures in the summer average out at around 75 to 80°F. With low humidity, conditions for hiking, horseback riding, nature trails, and even bouldering at Curt Gowdy State Park are more than ideal.

Conditions in the winter are slightly harsher, with averages around -5°F in the months from December through February. Despite the cold weather and frequent snowfall, there’s still a range of outdoor activities to take part in, like ice fishing, snowshoeing, and ice boating. If you’re not afraid of the cold, you should definitely experience at least one winter in Wyoming.

Getting Around Cheyenne

The Airport

Cheyenne is served by the Cheyenne Regional Airport (CYS), which currently offers flights to one destination, Denver. Passenger frequently depart from Cheyenne, transfer in Denver, and then continue on to their final destination.

Cheyenne Regional Airport is newly remodeled and with just three gates, it’s a welcome break from the maze-like airport terminals in major cities. After arrival, it usually only takes around 10 to 15 minutes to check in and pass through security. Free parking is available on-site.

The airport is just two miles from downtown, or around six minutes by car. While it’s possible to travel by foot, many visitors chose instead to take the bus into the city, which costs US$1.50 per ride. Alternatively, Lyft and Uber are both available in Cheyenne.

When it comes to exploring the city, public transportation is a viable option in Cheyenne. Top Attractions in Cheyenne

If you’re looking to dive into the city’s history, the best place to start is the Wyoming State Museum. With free entry, you’re sure to leave feeling more knowledgeable about the state’s flora, fauna, natural resources, and Native American history. If you’d like to go more in depth, consider making stops at the Nelson Museum of the West or Cowgirls of the West Museum as well.

While making your way through the downtown area, you can also hop on the railway trolley and take a tour to learn more about the city’s history and role during the American journey to the west.

The Cheyenne Artwalk is held every second Tuesday night of the month. It’s a great way to celebrate local artists and view their work with food and beverages.
