The Suites Hotel at Waterfront Plaza

We were excited to return to the Suites since we stayed there years ago and loved it! It is close to everything on Canal Park. We arrived, settled in, had dinner, watched the Lions lose in the playoffs and went to bed about 11pm. Right away I knew the mattress was worn out because of the huge divit in the middle of the bed (king bed). My husband and I rolled (litterly) into the middle of the bed where we felt the boards under the mattress. We thought it would be okay because we were so tired. We went to sleep. Then woke up numerous time in the night because the mattress was a NO MATTRESS. The next morning we were shown two more rooms to consider switching to where the mattresses were not much better. We were told the hotel was scheduled for a remodel and theat they could flip the mattress if we liked. We left.

The Suites has become quite threadbare. Although the room was spacious it had damage to a wall, old worn and mismatched furniture and threadbare towels. This hotel charges as much as their competitors in canal park for an inferior product.

Amazing location. Parking across the street was easy. Room was huge. Best free hotel breakfast I've ever had.

Breakfast buffet is what you get for free, vary little toilet paper ( less than half roll) dirt on walls in bathroom from maintenance doing work in the ceiling and finally air in water lines so water was spitting and splashing.

Great location and the staff at check in was very friendly. Room seemed like it was not cleaned very well if at all. All sorts of misc. garbage/small items on the floor from previous guests that probably would not be there if the room were vacuumed. Towels in bathroom were full of mascara from previous guests. Breakfast attendant did not seem to want/care to keep food stocked and seemed to want to get guests out of there beginning 30 minutes before breakfast ending. Heard her ask another guest “You’re making ANOTHER waffle?!” Overall average experience. I understand staffing constraints probably affect service. You are paying for location, not cleanliness or service.

Having a kitchenette is such a luxury!! I was there for a conference and everything was within walking distance so parking was not an issue. The walls are solid and there is almost ZERO noise that can be heard in the hallways. Everything was clean and when help was needed staff responded promptly and professionally.

The first shock in the amenities was that the room was situated in a center row of rooms. In other words, “view of Lake Superior “ or “view of the city “ (the only two options mentioned in the property description) were not an issue. THERE WERE NO WINDOWS AT ALL IN THE ROOM!!! It was like being in a cave! When I asked if they could put us in a room with a window of SOME kind, the response was “yes…..but upgrading to a room with a window will cost more.” SERIOUSLY??? At 11:00 pm, we finally called the front desk and asked them to come up and speak to the adolescents (and their parents or chaperones) who were running around and yelling/laughing in the halls all evening. At 11:45 pm, they were still disturbing any modicum of quiet hours. The whole hotel was full of hockey families there for some big competitions in town. There were children, unsupervised, from about 9 years old to high school age. They were rowdy and it didn’t appear that any of the adults were controlling their behavior. Nor was hotel management. There was a child’s Lego block in the middle of the living room/bedroom floor, and someone else’s long hair on the shower wall and sink in the bathroom. The shower had built in toiletries dispensers, which I thought was really nice. And it would have been if there had been shampoo in the dispenser and more than a tablespoon of shower gel in the dispenser. One towel was provided per person for a 2 night reservation.

Very nice hotel. We did pay a lot and chose to due to the amenities. But the sauna wasn't working and the hot tub was always full of kids. I would not pay this price if I knew or they should discount if all amenities were not offered.

This is a very strange hotel. The lobby is as advertised but the rooms me and my friends were given were all internal to the building with no windows or natural light and there was a giant pole literally in the center of the room. It was a large suite and had some nice amenities including a full size fridge and a stovetop for long term stays, I'm assuming. The bathroom had full size products but no extra towels and poor water pressure. We did not complain to the front desk or ask for any of these things to be addressed as we were only there for one night and did not have time to fuss with the room too much, so that's on us. However, the biggest issue was the thermostat in the room seemed to be completely non-functional and our room was boiling hot all night even though it was early January. It got to the point where I had to get up in the middle of the night to take a cold shower because I was getting dizzy from the heat. No amount of messing with our thermostat made a difference and with no windows, there was no other way for us to get relief. Also, a receipt for our stay was shoved under our door at 1:30AM, which was strange and woke us up. It was not a restful stay and certainly not worth the nearly $200/night cost.
