Fabulous stay. The duty manager and restaurant staff were brilliant. Helpful, friendly and professional. The food was delicious(best ever sticky toffee pud) our room(5) was lovely. Gorgeous deep bath, plenty of very hot water and lovely bath products. Our only ****** was the shower could have been cleaner(tiles area, but we manage holiday cottages so maybe looked too closely) this however did not spoil are stay and we can’t wait to rebook

It was mentioned that the Tontine, part of the Provenance Collection has a passion for high quality and a world of culinary delight. This was not the case on Christmas Day. Soup starter was tepid. Both of us ordered turkey for mains, our impression was it had been under a hot plate. We didn’t receive the creamed Brussels and the roast potatoes were inedible. The chocolate dessert was dry and underwhelming. The waiter brought petit fours, but we waited 15 minutes for coffee which didn’t arrive. At that point we decided to leave. I may add that the table staff were polite and worked extremely hard, but were totally overrun. We expected better but were totally disappointed.

We spent £1000 for Christmas lunch and it was not worth £10! Waited an hour for starters which to be fair was delicious but they were cold starters so easy to get temperature right. Waited ages for drinks, which when arrived they got wrong. Waited over 90 minutes for mains which when came we had to send back as it was stone cold. We asked them to reheat and when they arrived a second time they were still cold. Such a shame as the food tasted good but ruined by the temperature. Staff were in tears we felt so sorry for the waiting team they were as devastated as we were. Tables left mid meal obviously hungry! We really should receive a refund - totally unacceptable

YOU HAD TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT… Christmas Day for us as a disaster. Waited over hour and half for our Christmas Day dinner starter, another hour for the main which came incomplete, cold, and gravy which tasted like the main ingredient was salt. Didn’t wait for dessert. Tables were leaving on mass, waiters couldn’t cope (some were crying), Managers having to step in and cook. What on earth went on today? Too many peoples Christmas Day dinner celebrations ruined at the Tontine today. Someone from the Tontine needs to make a formal apology to all customers who experienced the chaos. We are currently £660 down, not to mention hungry.

I arrived at the Cleveland Tontine last week for a one night work stay, tired and stressed and thoroughly fed up and left the next morning rested, extremely well fed and very happy! From the start the lovely, friendly and professional staff made me feel right at home and nothing was too much trouble (particular thanks to Honour for looking after me). My room too was great - everything was thought of and incredibly comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. I just can't believe I have driven by the Cleveland Tontine a million times and never stopped but I will now, both for work and for holidays. See you again soon!

Decided on a trip to the Tontine for a Sunday lunch treat. We’ve been going to the Tontine for 18 years and it’s passed owners in that time but the changes made are subtle and classy. Lovely ambiance in the bar area for a drink before our meal, the Sunday lunch was truly exceptional, veg perfect, as was all the trimmings and gravy super lush. Lovely service and although the dessert took longer than we’d expect, we had an apology from the waitress. It didn’t reduce what was a really great time with my wife. We have already booked for Xmas day as a large group so really looking forward to that (!) Lovely welcome from Ryan and taken care of by him and Honour and between them we felt they cared about our experience which is priceless. Thank you folks. The experience has made our weekend; food and service (which is so important to us) Well done the Tontine.

We’d been wanting to try this place for ages and finally decided to give it a go. The food was nice, perhaps not as amazing as we’d been lead to believe from the reviews. I was expecting a lot more of a taste sensation from the glowing reviews but felt it was just an average Sunday dinner. The mash was lovely but the meat, veg and roasties were just ok. I didn’t feel it was the exceptional Sunday dinner I was expecting. I hate peas on a Sunday dinner and hadn’t realised that garden peas would be one of the main veg served alongside the food- my fault for not mentioning it but you don’t often see it and for a slightly higher end place, I just assumed they wouldn’t be on there. Service was reserved but extremely polite, staff were very nice and couldn’t do enough for you. The atmosphere was a little quiet, I think some low background music would have helped. Unfortunately I have a terrible phobia of rats and we saw a huge one in the little garden our table overlooked. It was running about for quite a while, coming up near the door at one point. I’m not for one second doubting the cleanliness of the place as it was very clean and I understand in a garden area in the countryside it could happen easily, but unfortunately due to my fear of them it made quite an impression on me. I don’t mind paying for good food at all, but perhaps because we’d built it up in our mind so much, for the amount we paid and what we had- it wouldn’t be for us again.

Went here for lunch and the food was absolutely delicious. 3 courses for 2 people with drinks for £80. The apple crumble was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Service was good and the surroundings pleasant. We will definitely be returning. Thank you.
