Previously known for being the hub for French fur trappers, Grand Forks, ND has since gained recognition for being home to University of North Dakota, and the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

Grand Forks, ND has a humid continental climate. The city is far-off from both mountains and oceans, and experiences extremely distinct seasons, with a great variation in temperatures. Expect arctic temperatures between November and March with average highs of 20°F, and average lows of 8°F. The weather becomes more temperate from April–October. The hottest months fall between June and August, with temperatures averaging at 80°F.

Things to Do in Grand Forks, North Dakota

What good is visiting Grand Forks if you’ve not planned to watch a game of college sports? Catch the University of North Dakota play college football at the Alerus Center, or ice hockey at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Grand Forks is a city full of family-friendly activities. You can have a “SimplyGrand” time at the trampoline park in Northern Air Fun Center, slide over to Splasher’s Water Park, and paddle board or canoe along the Red River.

Satiate your hunger and thirst with the various craft beer breweries and a myriad of restaurants at Downtown Grand Forks Historic District. A farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning from June–September, 09:00–14:00 in the historic Town Square. The Grand Cities Art Fest is held in the downtown area every June.

If you’re visiting during winter, consider trading out your sneakers for snow shoes. Go snowmobiling or cross country skiing along the Red River in Lincoln Drive Park.
