Sun1 Southgate

Good welcome by staff members upon arrival. And an easy check in. I had forgotten my Identitiy document for checking in; but the staff member made other means for me to be able to check in as I was completely frustrated needing a place to sleep for the night. Good clean and well maintained room. I’d definitely book at this place again.
City Lodge Newtown, Johannesburg

The customer service us excellent...from the reception right through the whole stay. The rooms are comfortable and clean. They have hot and cold breakfast options. No room service though! The snack restaurant serves great meals. We'll worth a visit if you are looking for budget friendly accommodation in the heart of the city!
Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel
4.1/510 Reviews
Since there aren't many reviews, I'll be a little more comprehensive: The hotel is literally inside the theme park- this is very cool. Getting in and out is not a problem. The rooms are spread out across a number of two-story buildings, so if you book two rooms, as we did, make sure you request they be in the same building. Rooms are fine- we had one suite and one non-suite- wifi and bathrooms are good, beds are comfortable, cleaning was not spotless. The inclusion of admission with the room makes this an incredible value for families. The restaurant available before/after park opening for guests, Barney's, is solid. The breakfast buffet is generous and eggs can be made to order. The hotel's technology is still paper-based in many areas, so don't expect an app or anything like that. The dinner options at Barney's were also solid- not gourmet, but above US theme park standards for sure. The bar is just okay- we had two of the worst glasses of wine we've ever had (didn't drink more than a sip as the bottles had probably been open a while) but then we had a nice bottle newly opened. The theme park is quite good- clean, with 5 coasters of varying thrill levels. The minigolf should not be missed (so different than beach mini-golfs in the US) but they only had a limited number of balls (!!). Staff was friendly and helpful whenever we had a question or issue. Overall, if Gold Reef City Theme Park is on your agenda, we'd highly recommend considering this as a spot to stay.

Downtown Johannesburg
Though the hotel was very nice and comfortable, but it is in an extremely noisy part of town, I hardly slept through the car and people’s noise from the street. The parking is also way too tight with a single entry & exit point, I don’t think they must allow big cars to park there, or rather alert the drivers of the sharp and tight corners before they drive in.

Downtown Johannesburg
This hotel is located in the heart of Maboneng on Fox Street, which is very bustling & busy. It’s very convenient as there are lots of shops, bars, & restaurants on this street. This is actually the only street that is safe to walk on around here, as I was warned by the front desk when I checked in not to walk on the other streets parallel to Fox St. There was also a sign in the front to beware of cell phone grabbers. The front desk was very helpful in providing all the information I needed during my stay. My international flight arrived at 6am in Joburg; hence I was super tired, so I really appreciated that I was able to check in early & take a short nap. The room overall was ok… simple but very spacious with a comfy bed. I liked that the big windows allowed a lot of natural light to come in. It was quite chilly when I arrived in Joburg in early June so the little space heater they provided in the room made it more comfortable. The room also has a little kitchenette, though I didn’t use it since I only stayed 2 nights. The only downside is that they didn’t have wifi when I arrived as they were still trying to get it fixed. Luckily, I bought a sim card at the airport beforehand. The next day, the front desk did notify me that wifi was back online so I was able to connect. Overall, for the location, the comfort, & the price, this is a decent place to stay for a couple of nights in Johannesburg.
