Ryokan Asadaya

Kanazawa|0.81km from Ikiru
We wanted to experience one traditional ryokan during our month in Japan, and we could not have made a better choice than Asadaya. Our welcome was gracious and following a tea service we were shown to our tatami room. We had just spent a week in a western-style hotel in Tokyo, and this room could not have been more different. When the door closed, we sat on the floor staring at each other in our simple suite, and my husband said ”Are you sure this was a good idea?” At that moment, I wasn't sure. Neither of us had experienced such simple accommodations before and we're not bed and breakfast types. But we changed our minds quickly when we allowed the peaceful zen of the place to take over. We fell in love with every single thing about our experience: our beautiful and simple suite, the comfortable beds (made extra long for two tall guys), wearing yukatas, enjoying the family bath (we never even used the in-room shower), afternoon tea, and the over-the-top kaiseke meals served on the most gorgeous dinnerware you'll ever see. It's hard to put into words the level of personal and respectful service we experienced throughout our three night stay. By the time we checked out, we felt like honored guests and close family, both at the same time. As we continued our travels through Japan, we met several natives of Kanazawa who live in other cities. Each of them knew of Asadaya by reputation, and each said the same thing: ”Asadaya is famous in Japan. Asadaya is well-known as one of the finest ryokans. You're so lucky to have stayed there.” Indeed, we were fortunate to experience this traditional ryokan experience. We'll be forever be grateful to sixteenth generation owner Qta, his mom Mrs. Asada, and everyone who hosted and cared for us. We're happy to have made their friendships and to experienced Japan through their hospitality. Tips: Don't miss the D.T. Suzuki Museum, one of the finest pieces of contemporary architecture on the planet and an equal of Mies' Barcelona Pavilion. If you're in town long enough, be sure to visit one of Qta's restaurants. We enjoyed phenomenal teppanyaki at Rokkakudo. Kanazawa is a wonderful small city. We highly recommend a multi-night stay to have the time to relax into it and enjoy all it has to offer.

The Hotel Sanraku Kanazawa 21th December 2022 Open

Kanazawa|1.01km from Ikiru
I’m here now and want to write about my experience as it’s happening. I’m blown away at this property. The beauty, the people, the quiet…except for the waterfall which you hear if you’re outside. I have a balcony room. The AC is splendid! There’s a tub inside the large shower area. The shower water is a little weaker than I normally care for, but YMMV. Breakfast is a huge buffet with very nice options, all Japanese and all high quality. Both mornings, I’ve been served an amuse. Tonight I’ll try dinner for the first time here, and no doubt it’ll be delicious. If you opt out of housekeeping, they leave you a big bag of two each large towels, hand towels and bath towels. Housekeeping is as quiet as a church mouse. I arrived at the Kanazawa train station, and even though I knew that there would be a shuttle bus, and which side to exit from, I didn’t know which one was mine. This information is not on the website, so I’ll tell you that you exit on the west side, and upon exiting, turn to the right, where the group bus waiting area is. And watch for a bus that is white with an orange *****e on the front. One other word of caution. There are two hotels that are named the same. Just because you see the hotel name on the outside, that may not be yours. Do you want to be sure that the driver and the accompanying guide know that the one you want is on this particular street. It’s a really new hotel, as it’s only been open for about a year. I upgraded and got the lounge access and that’s been totally worth it! The afternoon suites are so stunningly gorgeous and there’s a cocktail hour also in the afternoon, but I think it’s really like three or four hours long. The staff speaks their English, but have your Google translate ready for words that they may not automatically know. However, I will say they are extremely eager to understand and please you. I highly recommend this hotel!!

Inova Kanazawaekimae Hotel Suite

Kanazawa|0.39km from Ikiru
This is a reasonably priced hotel within walking distance from the Kanazawa station. The facility is quite new, and very well kept up, although the check-in area doesn’t give the greatest first impression. Security is good, with keycard access to the rooms, although no overnight coverage at the front desk. Room size (we had the family suite) was good, although the multiple beds took up most the room – good for big families. Bed was somewhat soft for our tastes, but we slept well. Bathroom and toilet are separate, a nice feature. Very nice shower with great water pressure. Staff communication good, and front desk personnel spoke excellent English. Our suite faced the railway tracks adjacent to the building, but the windows blocked most, but not all the noise from the trains; the residual noise was not enough to bother us, or affect our sleep. Unit was clean and well maintained – no squeaky doors or sink stoppers that didn’t work. Clothes storage is non-existent; only a limited number of hangers available. Lighting in the unit was excellent, and reading at night was easy. Large screen TV, with Netflix programming available without a membership – nice touch for those who don’t have a subscription, particularly since there’s no English TV channels that we could find. Ductless air conditioning worked quietly and effectively. Kitchen well equipped, but little room for eating. We didn’t use the washing machine, so can’t comment. The continental breakfast (called “Bread”) was actually quite good, although limited in scope. Excellent coffee – Illy machine that makes several kinds of coffee. We particularly appreciated the free ride back to the station. Overall, a very good value hotel, and we’d be happy to return.

Guesthouse Nagonde

This is the kind of homestay where many people live together. There is only a separate space for three people, and the rest are public facilities. The hotel’s location is about 10-15 minutes away from the station. In a street full of restaurants, the convenience store is far away, but the izakaya next to it is very characteristic. There are more locals, the owner is very enthusiastic, and a large conch is also presented. . The owner of the hotel is very nice and enthusiastic, and patiently help us guide the way. It may be that we are used to living in an environment with a separate bathroom, but feel that the private space is too small and inconvenient. There is nothing in the room except the quilt. We are not used to it and can only go out and stroll around. If you don’t mind these, language communication is barrier-free, and those willing to interact with locals, you can choose here.

The hotel definitely feels a bit old and tired, but it's still very clean and comfortable with excellent service. I was upgraded to what was essentially a junior suite due to my status and found the room to be very spacious and comfortable. The pillows were too soft for my taste but luckily there was a harder pillow in the closest. The toilet has an automatic bidet which will raise the lid as you get near it and then automatically flush (fancy!). Every morning the staff would also provide newspapers, which I thought was really old school. Location-wise this hotel can't be beat. You're literally right next to Kanazawa Station which gives you easy transportation access and also puts you close to dining options. There are a lot of malls around the station with good restaurants and shops. There's also a large 711 just a few steps away. The only gripe I had about the room was that I found the sink area to be a bit too small and there was little space for me to put my toiletries.
Guest House Pongyi

A small place, and very, very cozy. I had never stayed in a place where they made you feel so much at home. The owners take the time to explain what is necessary, they educate you about the place, I was really touched by their kindness. In relation to the rooms, I stayed in the mixed dormitory room, with very spacious and comfortable beds, and the curtains give the privacy necessary to have your space when you need to rest. The bathrooms equally clean. They do not give towels, even if they rent if necessary, so I recommend bringing your own if you want to save a little. It is a shame not to be able to give more points to this hostel, because it really deserves it !!!! 1000% recommended.

It was in front of the station and the bus stop to the airport was in front of you. There were various convenience stores and restaurants, and it was a really convenient hotel. The hotel itself is large, but the entrance was narrow and it was a bit unclear. If there was no card key, I couldn't go to the room floor, so that was security and safe. Is it a new hotel? It was beautiful and had a very clean impression. We had a comfortable stay.
Blue Hour Kanazawa

Blue Hour is a nice, comfortable modern hostel about a 5 minute walk from the train station. Honestly it had some of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept on in Japan and my larger trip. The beds are pods too with a privacy curtain, light and mirror inside. The privacy you get is so nice. The female dorm also has a small seating area just for its guests and a small fridge for breakfast. The female dorm is also key code locked and has its own bathroom. The small grocery store in the building is a great feature too. I was here in summer and have a few items to be aware of: - There is Air Con in the dorms but it doesn’t get in to the bed pods so those can be toasty - The air con in the female area also isn’t very strong but it’s not too bad - Great WiFi speed - No laundry but laundromat nearby - This is on the third floor and there is NO lift. So the walk up with luggage is hot My only issues were that staff didn’t speak much English and gave misinformation about how to get around the city. Just go to the train station and get help there. I also had an issue with my bed but staff took care of it the next day at my request. One last thing, the dorm area can be loud, especially with suitcases knocking around and people coming in/out of the locked door. Overall, I would stay again and recommend it for a short stay.
Garden Hotel Kanazawa

We stayed here on 2 different occasions 1 week apart. First time we had a beautiful room with twin beds, second time we booked a room with a double bed. While we liked the first one very much we were unpleasantly surprised a week later to find a well worn room with a drab bathroom, dirty carpet and overall feeling like 2 stars less than the one we stayed in earlier. Not sure if there are some renovations going but the inconsistency on the accommodation quality made us rate this only 3. Location is very good across the train station and bus terminal and breakfast was good as well with asian and non-asian options.
