Incredible place to stay. Never experienced anything like this place. From the moment we arrived until the end we felt like first class guests. Nothing was too much for the staff. Would love to go back but I feel 1 or 2 nights are enough. Thank you for your hospitality

This thoughtfully renovated hotel is a pleasure to stay in. The rooms are comfortable, the grounds are magnificent, the staff are friendly and professional whilst the food in the restaurant is delicious. We would definitely recommend it.

Awful condition golf course. I know it has been wet, however, the greens were some of the worst I have ever played. Poor service and staff dismissive. Re building the clubhouse and a lot of work is going on. Great setting but the golf course condition was terrible. Looks to me like they have focussed on the hotel and not looked after the course.

Undoubtably a fantastic location grounds and magnificent building. However during a recent stay to celebrate a birthday and anniversary we were let down by the service and poor house keeping of our room. The room itself had recently been refurbished paintwork and carpet bedding all looked good. The room safe did not work and was at ground level with the door wide open and would not close so permanently open wide a trip hazard and accident waiting to happen. We were told it would take some time to fix and advised we bring our valuables to reception whilst we visited the spa a solution not acceptable to us. The toilet was not clean and the toilet brush soiled. The bath robes were completely worn out and unusable. We engaged a manager at this point and went to the room to show the faults and he agreed it was unacceptable. We just felt undervalued as a guest and decided just to leave. At this point we did not even get a decent apology or offer to move room I guess due to the fact the hotel was full. Just very disappointed.

We have just returned from an amazing 1 night stay at Matfen for my birthday. From the moment we arrived we were so well looked after, the staff couldn’t do enough for you. The building and grounds are absolutely stunning and the luxury suite was just amazing! Both the Sunday dinner and the breakfast were delicious. Highly recommend staying here, we’ll be back!

Beautiful hotel set in magnificent grounds. Lovely staff. Food superb. Gym great and pool amazing. This was my second time at Matfen and my only advice would be not to visit if there is a wedding on. Struggled to park. We were made to feel most unwelcome on arrival - not allowed to enter via the main door as the bride and groom were there. Not allowed to enter round the side as more wedding guests there also. Not allowed to check in at reception but ushered through to a bar area, also used by wedding guests, where we waited for forty minutes and still unable to check in. When eventually we managed to check in, were shown to a room we had not booked - we’d booked for the main hotel but were taken to a room in an annexe near the spa. This room was amazing and very quiet (far away from the wedding). I assume we were moved because of the wedding - but it would have been nice to be told. Very handy for restaurant and spa. For the next 48 hours, everything was blamed on ‘the wedding’ - slow service, running out of orange juice at breakfast etc. It is a fabulous venue for a wedding mind - but close the hotel to non-wedding guests in that case. We had to ask for room to be serviced. And they forgot the shortbread!! Because of the awful check in experience, we were given complimentary champagne (glass each) with dinner the first night and free coffees the next day. I’d been looking forward to this visit for six months. It was just a shame to be treated as less worthy than the wedding guests. I do thoroughly recommend it though - and have booked to go back.

The rooms are beautifully comfortable and the sheets are so soft and lovely to sleep in. However, we ate in the cloisters restaurant and the food was overpriced and under seasoned. Very underwhelming. The scallops were served with raw asparagus and humous which was a strange combination and we had to season every course that we ate. We ordered padron peppers which never arrived. The cote du boeuf was fine, cooked to our order but again needed salt and pepper and the sauces were watery and tasteless. We ordered room service breakfast which didn't show up and we had to chase, and when it arrived was poor for the quality of the hotel. Would recommend the hotel for the rooms only, but would definitely avoid eating there if you can

The hotel is a loverly building welcoming staff. We booked the 8 course tasting menu. Rather disappointed we were the only couple in the main dinning room, which was rather uncomfortable. The canapés were really disappointing . We were requested to turn up at the bar 15 minutes before the time meal was booked for the canapés, only for no staff to be there, left waiting for 15 minutes. The meat course should have been the highlight, unfortunately it was uneatable. When we complained we were told it was going to be taken of the menu as they had complaints the previous two nights. They still charged us full price. For the cost of the hotel and meal not the standard we would expect.
