Beautiful hotel set in magnificent grounds. Lovely staff. Food superb. Gym great and pool amazing. This was my second time at Matfen and my only advice would be not to visit if there is a wedding on. Struggled to park. We were made to feel most unwelcome on arrival - not allowed to enter via the main door as the bride and groom were there. Not allowed to enter round the side as more wedding guests there also. Not allowed to check in at reception but ushered through to a bar area, also used by wedding guests, where we waited for forty minutes and still unable to check in. When eventually we managed to check in, were shown to a room we had not booked - we’d booked for the main hotel but were taken to a room in an annexe near the spa. This room was amazing and very quiet (far away from the wedding). I assume we were moved because of the wedding - but it would have been nice to be told. Very handy for restaurant and spa. For the next 48 hours, everything was blamed on ‘the wedding’ - slow service, running out of orange juice at breakfast etc. It is a fabulous venue for a wedding mind - but close the hotel to non-wedding guests in that case. We had to ask for room to be serviced. And they forgot the shortbread!! Because of the awful check in experience, we were given complimentary champagne (glass each) with dinner the first night and free coffees the next day. I’d been looking forward to this visit for six months. It was just a shame to be treated as less worthy than the wedding guests. I do thoroughly recommend it though - and have booked to go back.
