The Long Man Inn has clearly had some money spent on it and presents as a nice gastro-pub. I was impressed to see bike parking to the side, there’s an amazing new cycle route with 50m of the front door along the A27, and I’m surprised more businesses along this stretch have not taken that into account and looked to maximise the opportunity. The often-tricky subject of gendered toilets has been tacked head on with “All Gender Thunderbox” labelling on the clean and well provisioned individual toilets. The pub prob also has the single largest collection of Long Man artwork, pictures and paraphernalia in the country and I think it’s great to see them embracing and celebrating the icon that they are named after. We only had a quick single course lunch on our visit. The service was polite enough id didn’t see or experience nay rudeness, but there was a lack of ability. The menu is not extensive, but they do have a couple of different burgers with different names. When I ordered the Long Man burger, I watched as the waitress wrote ‘burger’, my wife ordered the vegan stew and this was recorded as ‘stew’. Predictably 5 minutes later she came back to ask which actual burger I wanted. 5 minutes after that, another visit, and a check if we wanted the venison stew of the vegan one. I can only imagine how the chef must have been banging their head on the counter and muttering about not being a mind reader. The food was slow to come out taking 40 or 50mins which I thought might happen and was the primary reason we had only ordered a single course. The vegan stew was really good, great flavour and well put together, the chips were good and the burger was nice, though it was a little overcooked. It was a shame that it was over cooked as the elements were clearly good quality and it had the potential to be a great burger. The next table had the macaroni cheese and that looked like a real winner, so despite the mixed review I will be back to that. The place is nice, somebody had invested time and effort into both venue and menu, but it’s being let down at the moment by a slow and inexperienced front of house service that could easily be fixed if they chose to address it.
