We will never forget our amazing stay at the Qhota Uta lodge in Uros! This is a very special place! Do not expect luxury, but prepare yourself for an authentic experience in an amazing and very special place! Bring enough warm clothes and enjoy the incredible way the Uros people are living! The floating islands are truly unique and the locals will be very happy to show you all the ins and outs of life in this special community! Jhony was our guide for a day and he went out of his way to tell us his family story and life in Uros, he was friendly and helpful. To keep their island floating is actually lots and lots of continuous work, because every month they have to get totora out of the lake to place a new layer on top, otherwise their island cannot continue. They even have to lift the rooms and houses up, to place a layer underneath - just imagine how much work to have you come and visit. This is just incredible, we really loved our stay. Do not expect this place to be luxurious. Do also not expect this place to be run by people who have studied tourism or hostelry, as its more like a family home stay. Expect cold and windy weather on the lake, dry composting toilets that do smell a bit, do not over rely on electricity, internet and a warm water shower. Ask for a warm water bottle in bed to keep you warm at night. The people here do not live a luxury life, but do have a very unique lifestyle and history to tell you. Yes, they will try to sell you some handicrafts or a trip, but you are totally free to say no. Just keep an open mind & you will have the time of your life!!! This lode is within our top 3 of places we stayed at during a one month trip in Peru - we loved it and our kids especially thought it was a totally amazing place!
