beach. Hotel looks good on first impression but on closer looking lobby is tired, sofas need cleaning. Rooms very very basic, covers so dated, doors shabby. There is strange sort of small lounge as you come in which doesn't serve any purpose. Curtains didn't meet, only two sockets worked. Air conditioning button seemed to have loose wires and you had to jiggle the switch about to get it working. The tv was a big old grey version (didn't think they were still used) only CNN channel. Breakfast not really good couldn't get a normal cup of tea. Not everyone likes flavoured. Asked for natural tea told didn't have any. Staff not very friendly asked if they could print boarding passes and told no system was done but clearly they were using it at the desk, concierge gentlemen were very nice. The city tour offered by Daisy was amazing. She was very helpful, upbeat, friendly and eager to show us around. She was also taking care of us while walking around by giving us tips. At the end of the tour we had a group lunch and she was very helpful with the language barrier.

The hotel is in a great location if you want to explore Rio. It’s located right off Copacabana beach and there are loads of supermarkets and good restaurants in walking distance. We have had no safety issues at all and Ubers typically will appear within 5 minutes and typically cost max £5 anywhere in the South Zone. We booked the hotel with breakfast included, which is absolutely fine. Some dishes in the buffet change per day, some are the same every day. The cakes are really good! The pool area is quite small but ideal to just go for a swim at the end of the day, and has some nice views. The reception is really helpful and most speak English or Spanish (which isn’t the case in most of Rio) as well as Portuguese of course. They also have a selection of excursions which tend to be cheaper than other providers. The only reason it’s not a 5/5 review is because the facilities are quite dated - particularly the air conditioning (it functions but it is quite loud). The room is cleaned every day, but not to the highest standards. But all in all, would definitely recommend it if you’re planning on seeing lots of Rio and need a more than decent base.

The room was comfortable but had a musty smell. There was no smart TV and the air didn't cool well. Very dirty bathroom. Parking costs 80 reais daily!! The breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. But the cost-benefit ratio was not worth it

I was very happy again for the hospitality, reception and education of the entire Mar Ipanema team, always very well received. I have to especially thank Bruno from the reservation sector, Silvia and Alessandra for all their cordiality

I opted for a bed in the 10-bed female dorm at Carneval. Cost me $90 with an official airport taxi but for this uninitiated female solo traveller I just wanted to take the easiest route for arriving late on a Saturday night. Very much a young backpackers place, you will party and you will drink here if you don't go to the 'English' bar across the road which is where I did go and had a grand time chatting to the bar staff who were a bit older than my fellow bedmates (who were all lovely, by the way). It's as clean as it can be for a quick turnaround place, free drinks between 7-8pm and the staff were just lovely. Helpful and friendly. Short walk from the beach. I felt safe wandering at night here and the Metro is a block or so away. Only tiny grumble is that the photos on tripadvisor are not of the Ipanema site; it's a lot, lot smaller!

I'll try to keep this brief. Our stay at Augusto's Copacabana Hotel was less than satisfactory. The place may have once been a boutique 80s getaway, but it's not aged well, and once you get past the semi-glamourous entrance and lobby, you're met with pretty low standards. Here are the pros and cons: Pros - Good shower, albeit it had four nozzles which initially made it confusing to know how to use it. The pressure was strong, and it had hot water. - The pool area on the roof is nice and good for sunbathing and relaxing. - The location is great. It's in the heart of Copa and only a five-minute walk from a large supermarket and the beach. Cons - Staff weren't particularly friendly. A smile was a big ask most of the time. - Due to a later flight, my friend asked if he could stay at the hotel a little longer. He was allowed to store his bags, but any further than the lobby (i.e. the pool) meant he would have to pay for another day. What's more, when he conceded to pay another day, they unapologetically told him they were too busy. - The beds were old and hard. I'll need half a year of chiropractic work before my neck is in good health. - The aircon is louder than a harrier jet. Ensure you have earplugs to soften the noise. Fortunately, we had these. However, they didn't completely drown out the noise. - The wifi doesn't work. - The TV works for about 10 minutes before losing signal and exploding into a fuzzy, loud static. - One lift means long waits to get up and down the floors and often cramped trips, which are made even more uneasy when you hear the disconcerting crackles as it approaches the ground floor. - The gym attire was invented when God was a boy. - Many of the pool chairs were worn and had holes in them. - The phone in the room doesn't seem to work. When I went downstairs to order an additional glass for the room, it never came. So we ended up using a plastic one we found on a previous shopping trip. - Finally, to control the electricity in the room, you're met with a control panel from the USS Enterprise. It would take us several attempts each night to find the right configuration to turn the main light out.

Quick check in from the friendly staff and a convenient locations but that's about where the positives end for me. The elevators were slow and hard to get to with luggage due to how cramped the whole hotel is. The room decor is cute, but you can tell they've done a cheap renovation of the space and things are just a band-aid to cover up something crappy rather than a complete fix. We even had a fully open electrical box in our room. Our room was clean, but my friends had to request their room be cleaned after checking in, there was sand everywhere on the beds and floors. The rooms are also very, very small. We had to move around furniture just to fit our cases in the door. I'd recommend they remove the desks squished against the wall; they're not necessary and they really need to create space. I forgot to mention that I did appreciates the small store the hotel had with food, water, snacks and other essentials like sunscreen.
