Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Marys Gate

Sheffield|0.43km from 99 Jump Street
We stayed at this hotel overnight during our trip to Peak District and Yorkshire. We booked this hotel due to my Accor All membership and we had minimal expectations considering this is an Ibis Budget hotel. The hotel is at the edge of the city but very central, only a few minutes walk to the main city centre. It seemed quite new/recently furbished and the rooms were simple but had all the necessities. The lobby is really nicely decorated and the staff are really welcoming and enthusiastic. Here are a few more details on my visit: Welcome: The reception staff was very efficient. It literally took 2 minutes to get our room keys. We were welcomed with a recognition of my Accor All status and offered free welcome drinks. The room was ready and waiting for us. Room: The room is simple but allowed us to stay comfortably as 3 people. The room was clean and there were tea/coffee making facilities, hangers and towels. I only felt the need to have a small table or something to put our stuff on since there was only a small amount of space that you can use as table top but it is a really minor improvement overall. Dining: Our stay included breakfast. The breakfast was nice and included many different options. However, there were hot ”English breakfast” style food. It really didn't matter since there are still boiled eggs and lots of options. I really enjoyed our breakfast. Location: While the hotel is really central, there are parking available around the hotel. We used the on street parking on the back street with a bit of worry for the safety of the car over night but it was ok. The hotel also has its own car park but it is 8£ overnight. Staff: Really friendly. They accommodated our needs at the best level service. I couldn't ask for a better staff. Overall, great hotel to stay when you are in Sheffield. Since the hotel is a budget hotel, you should have low expectations while arriving. But I'm sure it will go above and beyond your expectations when you are there.

Spent a night here as an add-on for an event at city hall. I've visited the spa & health club previously & thought I'd make an afternoon of it before the event as I work locally. Check in is Usually 3pm however, after arriving at 1:20pm and politely asking if I was able to check in now I was very kindly allowed access to the room by the friendly, helpful Wiktoria on reception. This allowed me to chill out a bit after an early start & get changed to use the pool & saunas as I waited for my friend to arrive. Room had a nice view of the old town hall, twin beds, a mini fridge for milk & wine and rather helpfully, a separate bath and shower which is rare these days. Fairly clean however, when I moved one of the beds there was a thick layer of dust beneath it. Also the carpets & furniture are looking very tired now. It could certainly do with a freshen up. Also, no hand soap by the sink however, there was body lotion. The windows do not open but there is temperature control. Personally I found this rather noisy and had to switch it off to sleep. Spa area is okay but again, looking rather tired with old carpets and lots of dark wood. It's rather maze-like layout isn't be best either. Lockers are now available poolside for guests with a self locking system. Pool was clean enough with lots of loungers and chairs to relax. Sauna, ice room and steam rooms are for some reason unlit which I find interesting.... It's a mainly wet area and chances of slipping are highly likely so....maybe a little light? Generally clean though and not too busy being midweek. Lifts were out of service when we returned to the room late that evening, so we begrudgingly climbed the stairs to bed and hoped that they'd be fixed in the morning when we left with our heavy bags. Unfortunately they were not, and so a trudge against down the stairs was required. Not the best. Overall a nice central location but at £96 midweek (booked in advance via booking.com on a rewards rate) I think it's a bit steep for a substandard room and mediocre health club. Would I stay again? Yes, but for half the price.

Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall & Spa

I booked a luxury spa day for 3 people. This cost £225. I booked this for my Mother’s 50th birthday. Upon arrival today I was disappointed to find that the “spa” were just facilities that were part of the hotel which any guests could access. This meant there were children tearing around, diving into the pool, unsupervised. This doesn’t fit the brief of “luxury” and it was not relaxing. The children were under 16 and were not supervised at all times. This meant that the pool was not able to be swam in because they were leaping around and playing. They also chewed off chunks of floats (that were provided) that then were just floating around in the pool. When it was time for lunch in your Lakeside View restaurant, we were informed that there was a wedding so we couldn’t eat in there. That would’ve been fine if there was a suitable alternative. There wasn’t. We were sat in what felt like the reception/bar of the hotel. Where wedding guests were milling around, so again, not luxury. The food was not what I had been told it was going to be. I was informed, when I called, it was a tapas style menu. The choices were dire and led to all three of us having a sandwich for lunch. Not really £225 worth for the food we received. Our starters came out after our main meals so we ended up with a table full of plates so there was no room on the table for any movement etc. During our afternoon, a large group of people (members of the public) came in and were behaving in such a way they ended up being told to leave the establishment. There were a few children and teenagers making lots of noise and setting off panic alarms in the changing rooms. They also left the changing rooms in a disgusting state, with towels strewn all over the floor. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with the “luxury” spa day that I booked and paid £225 for. I was looking forward to a relaxing day with my Mother and Grandmother. We received the opposite. I feel it has very much ruined my Mother’s birthday. How can the advertise a “luxury spa day” for us to receive that kind of service! Appalled

Everything is nice. But I just worry about the young lady at the reception. She seems has some problems with smiling, I found she couldn’t smile at us, she seems can only smile at those white people. She seems also has a problem with her ear that she couldn’t hear my room number correctly since the card couldn’t open the door and it needed to be fixed. Well, Sheffield is a nice city any way.

Had a fantastic stay for a birthday treat. My self and my friend stayed in a mezzanine suite and it was perfect!! We were greeted by Ella at reception, she was really friendly and helpful. After checking in we nipped to the bar for a quick drink before going out for our meal and the team member on the bar (sorry I didn't get his name) was again really friendly. The room was clean and spacious! The location of the hotel is fantastic. But the main thing for me was the customer service. Each team member we encountered was polite and welcoming. We will definitely be back soon!!
