What a beautiful place. The rooms are very comfortable with everything you need, including being given fresh milk for your tea. Breakfast was superb with probably the best sausages I've ever had. The staff were warm, welcoming and very friendly. I highly recommend it, and I'd definitely stay again

What a lovely place to visit! We came here for steak on St,George's day the owners go all out on decor very warm and welcoming. The food was outstanding!staff were lovely only down fall staff member Hazel needs a lesson in customer service the whole time we ate we could hear her slating the other staff and how she would run the hotel if it was hers was off putting in all ways! Love that dogs are welcome!!!

Very welcoming from the minute we stepped into the Inn. Warm welcome both by staff and the two open fires creating a pleasing a**osphere. Rooms were more than adequate and dinner was generously portioned as was the following days breakfast. Quintessential English town with friendly faces all round. Ideally situated for walking on moors and exploring Hadrians wall

The food is outstanding. As is the a**osphere and the welcoming feel of the place. The waitresses are fabulous. I have been before with my friends Catherine and James, I then went with other friends and we’ve all enjoyed everything we had. They were also really helpful with a fussy eater in our group. That’s not easy on a busy Sunday.

Lovely spacious and comfy room with a view over the historic centre of the village. The breakfasts set us up for the day and the power shower was just what we needed after a day's walk (and there are fabulous walks from the door -- Gelt Valley, Hadrian's Wall, Talkin Fell, Geltsdale RSPB Reserve and more). Really well connected with public transport too.

Went with a friend for a meal, sadly I had the Mrs Kirkham's Cobbler which the cheese dumplings were very hard which made it difficult to eat. Otherwise everything else was lovely, the dogs are so friendly I spent most of my meal playing with them. The staff were polite, the fire was a lovely touch & it was just a nice night all around.

Well reading the reviews I think we might have got the wrong place. After booking and past the free cancellation date we were informed 24hrs before we arrived that there will be loud live music!!! We arrived at 17:00 only to find no parking what so ever, I couldn’t even get into the place as there must have been 20 people smoking by the front door. We tried to ring and got no answer, so we had to book somewhere else. We got a phone call off them 35 mins later, I told them what had happened, was met by a VERY rude female who said it wasn’t their fault and put the phone down on me. £100+ for a room we never even stayed in and couldn’t even get into as there was no parking at all. One very annoyed, disgruntled person.

Conveniently located in the centre of this bustling Cumbrian market town the Howard Arms affords an exceptionally warm and relaxed welcome to those travelling with much loved canine companions. Comfortable rooms, cosy fires in the bar/restaurant, nothing seems to be too much trouble for the hospitable staff team who will go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable and as relaxed as they can. Short stay parking in front of the hotel or a large free public car park at the rear. Very busy with pre Christmas clients, staff still had time for this solo traveller and his Labrador who enjoyed the occasional treat from a member of Team Howard. Didn't find a residents lounge if there is one. It might have offered a relaxed spot to read after a busy day. Bedrooms are clean and comfortable and serviced daily. Excellent en-suite facilities. You couldn't really ask for more from a popular traditional Cumbrian In. The Lab and I enjoyed our stay. Thank you Team Howard.
