Actually, visiting New York in September–October is a brilliant decision—the weather is most comfortable, walking isn't a pain, and the art season has started. But there are definitely a few things you'll regret not knowing before you go. 🍂 Why September–October is actually better September days are mild (around 22°C), and October is crisp (around 16°C), making it perfect for walking around. Summers are muggy and winters are freezing; autumn is the best season to "explore on foot" in New York. The leaves in Central Park start changing color in late October. If you're going for the fall foliage, the end of the month is a safer bet. 🗓 4-day, 3-night relaxed itinerary Day 1: Midtown classics, don't overdo it. Just soak in the atmosphere at Times Square; don't set your expectations too high, as it's noisy and expensive. Stop by Grand Central Terminal to see the celestial ceiling, then head to the Empire State Building for the night view. Buy your tickets online in advance; the on-site line starts at 2 hours. Day 2: Museum + park, pick just one. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is too big to see everything; just pick the Egyptian Wing and the Roof Garden. In the afternoon, head to Central Park, walk from Bethesda Terrace to Bow Bridge, and sit on a bench to zone out—that's the right way to do it. In the evening, go to Greenwich Village for jazz; it's a hundred times better than eating at a chain restaurant in Times Square. Day 3: Lower Manhattan history route. Take the earliest ferry to the Statue of Liberty; there's basically no line before 8:30 AM. On the way back, stop by the Wall Street Charging Bull and visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. A slice at Artichoke Basille’s is ridiculously huge. · The Halal Guys: The yellow food cart. Chicken over rice with white sauce and hot sauce; you can get stuffed for under US$10. · Katz's pastrami sandwich: Expensive but worth experiencing once; the meat is piled high like a mountain. · Chinatown dim sum: Nom Wah Tea Parlor is the oldest dim sum shop in New York; the shrimp dumplings and turnip cake are both great. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls (hard-learned lessons) Tipping is mandatory. 15%–20% for dine-in, 15%–20% for taxis, and US$1–US$2 for hotel housekeeping. If you don't tip, you might be chased down for it. Take the subway during the day, but take a car at night. A single subway ride is US$3; you can just tap your phone using OMNY. However, the subway cars can be sketchy late at night, so try to use Uber/Lyft after dark; they are cheaper than yellow cabs and won't take the long way around. Walk on the right, don't block the way. New York sidewalk etiquette is sacred; please step aside if you stop to take photos. Don't eat near Times Square. It's expensive and tastes bad; the real food is three blocks away. Carry a power bank. You rely on your phone for navigation, photos, and checking the subway; you'll panic if it runs out of battery. Wear your most comfortable shoes. Don't walk 30,000 steps on the first day, or you'll be wrecked for the rest of the trip. New York isn't a "perfect" city; it's crowded, expensive, and a bit chaotic. But when you're walking across the Brooklyn Bridge in autumn and the wind blows, you'll feel like it was all worth it.

Day 1: Took the subway from the airport to our hotel🏨 Since we arrived at night, we just explored around the hotel and grabbed some water at the supermarket! Day 2: Acai bowl for breakfast at Oak berry💞💋🥣 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM MET🖼 (Metropolitan Museum of Art Bagel🥯 Chill in Central Park 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM American Museum of Natural History🦖 (Filming location for Night at the Museum Ate tacos at Los Taco No.1! It was so insanely good that we went back the next day!!!! Times Square 🏙️ Disney store 🏰🐭🎀✨ Day 3: Morning bagel at Esss-a-Bagel🥯 The salmon cream cheese and BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado🥑) was the best! 10:00 AM - MoMA🖼️ Ate New York cheesecake at Juniors🧁 It's huge and American-sized, so sharing one between two people is perfect! 7:00 PM - Watched Aladdin🧞♂️ on broad way We had seats right in the middle of the third floor for about 10,000 yen. We had a great view and it was amazing!! Went to Los Taco No.1 again this day!🌮 Two tacos are just the right amount! (For a girl👩🏽) Day 4: Off to Dumbo!! Gossip Girl fans will be super excited!! Walked across the Brooklyn Bridge🌉 from Dumbo! Took about 30-40 minutes? The view is so stunning that it flew by in a flash! Grabbed food at LEON’s bagel🥯 Shopping in SOHO🛍️! Rode the Staten Island Ferry to see the states of Liberty🗽 Statue of Liberty! It's a free round trip so🆓 it's the best😃 Went to see the 9/11 Memorial Pools. From there, we had pastrami sandwiches at Katz's Delicatessen, which President Clinton supposedly loved🥪!!! It's huge, so sharing one between two people is a good idea for this too!! Day 5: Breakfast at Ess-a-Bagel yet again, and drank a matcha latte at blankstreet🍵 Matcha is a massive trend among New Yorkers right now. Even though I'm Japanese, I got totally hooked on it in America🌎🌎 After that, took some commemorative photos at Central Station📸 More shopping in SOHO🛍🛒𓈒𓂂𓏸 I forgot to buy souvenirs at the MET so I went back for them (they actually let me in when I told them I wanted to buy souvenirs🥺), enjoyed the view of Central Park and hit up a nearby Starbucks😽 Since we had a late-night flight, we went back to the hotel to grab our luggage and took a bus to Newark Airport;🚌; You absolutely must book your bus tickets in advance!! The bus stop is also hard to find, so if you have 2 or 3+ people, taking an Uber from the hotel might be a better option! It was the absolute best trip🗺🗺 [Hotel We Stayed At] Neighborhood Midtown East Hotel Name pod51HOTEL It's right in the heart of Manhattan and about a 5-minute walk to the station! Super convenient for getting anywhere, and there are famous restaurants nearby so I highly recommend it. There's no private bathroom in the room, but the shared shower rooms and toilets are sparkling clean, not a unit bath, and securely locked with a card key so it's safe! You can check if the bathrooms on your floor are occupied from your room, which saved us the hassle of going to check and made things easy🙆 There are multiple bathrooms, so it was great being able to go in at the same time as my friend! [What to Bring] If you're a student, definitely bring your student ID! Admission to museums and galleries will be half price or less, so don't forget it!!! It doesn't even have to be an international student ID; a Japanese-only student ID works just fine☺️(((o(*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)o))) I didn't bring any cash at all! Only my card and Apple Pay! Had zero issues😽 [Things to Keep in Mind] Since public restrooms are scarce, it's best to use the bathroom at tourist spots like museums and restaurants🙆♀️ Bringing your own reusable water bottle might be handy. Restaurant portions are often American-sized, so sharing is highly recommended!! Flights, hotel, and sightseeing came out to about 230,000 yen in total! It's a popular tourist destination where you can really feel that classic New York vibe📸 Snap tons of photos and pretend you're the star of the show!💃 Next, we hopped on the train and headed to the highly anticipated Statue of Liberty cruise!🗽 Catching a ferry from around Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan lets you get an up-close look at the ultimate symbol of New York—the Statue of Liberty. On a sunny day, the boat offers spectacular panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn cityscape! (Unfortunately, we got hit with some nasty wind and rain this day, making for a rather rough boat ride... but hey, that's just another travel memory🌧️) After soaking in the Statue of Liberty, we made our way to the Brooklyn area. Located right at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, Time Out Market New York is a massive food hall bringing together some of the best local restaurants. This massive complex is packed with restaurants, specialty shops, markets, and interesting spaces to wander through. There’s honestly so much here that you could easily spend several hours exploring! 🏭 First, what is Industry City? Industry City is a sprawling 35-acre complex of historic industrial buildings that have been transformed into a vibrant destination for food, shopping, art, and entertainment. Once part of Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront, the buildings now house dozens of restaurants, cafés, specialty stores, creative businesses, and unique attractions. One of my favorite things about the complex is how much variety there is. You can wander between buildings, discover little shops, grab something to eat, and relax in the outdoor courtyards. Some of the passageways are decorated with colorful lanterns, artwork, and creative installations, giving the whole area a really fun atmosphere. 🇯🇵 The highlight: Japan Village! Tucked inside Industry City is Japan Village, a two-story Japanese marketplace and cultural destination that almost feels like stepping into a little corner of Japan. The main attraction is its Japanese food hall, where you’ll find a variety of vendors serving everything from ramen and sushi to rice bowls, hand rolls, and other Japanese specialties. There are so many options that choosing what to eat might be the hardest part of your visit! You can also explore Sunrise Mart, a Japanese supermarket stocked with imported snacks, candies, drinks, groceries, fresh ingredients, and other Japanese products. It’s a great place to pick up interesting treats or ingredients you might not normally find at a typical grocery store. Beyond the food, Japan Village has shops and cultural experiences to discover, including Japanese-inspired fashion, photo booths, and even traditional tea ceremony experiences. 🍜 And there’s even more to explore! Japan Village is only one section of Industry City. The larger complex has a huge selection of restaurants, bakeries, cafés, shops, and other businesses representing different cuisines and cultures. There are places to grab Middle Eastern food, barbecue, coffee, desserts, and much more. You’ll also come across specialty retailers, design shops, art spaces, and beautiful outdoor courtyards where you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere. What makes Industry City especially worth visiting is that it’s not just a single attraction. It’s an entire destination where you can walk around without a strict plan and keep discovering new things. 📍 Location: Japan Village, 934 3rd Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY 🚇 Getting there: Take the D, N, or R subway to 36th Street in Brooklyn. While watching movies and enjoying meals, I was already in the New York mood 💛 I arrived in New York late at night. After checking into the hotel by taxi, I thought, "Why not!" and headed to Times Square 🚖 Even in the middle of the night, it was filled with lights and people, truly capturing the essence of NY—so moving! ✨ After that, I stopped by a nearby supermarket, grabbed some light snacks, and had a late-night dinner at the hotel 🍴 Even though I was tired, I couldn't stop feeling excited—this trip already feels amazing even before going to bed!

After breakfast at a stylish cafe, I headed to Tickets in Times Square. 🎫 I got my Broadway tickets for tomorrow, adding another layer of excitement to my trip! People sat on benches by the lake, which reflected the small buildings and tree shadows from the opposite shore. The park is free, and it's less crowded in the morning, so you can walk for half a day without getting bored. The paths, stone bridges, and lawns in the park follow one after another. A loop around the lake gives you a good look at the autumn scenery. The straight, tree-lined path in the park is flanked by tall trees covered in fallen leaves. At the end of the path is a platform where you can look out and see the buildings on both sides framing a sliver of sky. Several stone bridges span the paths. They are low, so you can see the roads and people passing below. Outside the park are the neighborhoods. After 2 weeks of hopping between hotels for work, it was so nice to have a place that feels like home, especially with a large kitchen! And the bed is next to this door that opens to the outside space, and I felt the curtains were pretty thin which is a shame when you think of the heat loss. My main reason to recommend is obviously the kitchen! Fully furnished, with a dishwasher, what more to ask?
