This is my overall guide for my trip to Tibet 📝. For this trip, I chose not to join a tour group, not to drive myself, and not to do a "military-style" fast-paced itinerary. The main focus was pure enjoyment 😌. I broke the trip down into many small itineraries, each 1-2 days long, so you can DIY based on your own needs and time! ✅ Centered in Lhasa, round-trip from Lhasa 📍 A. City Itinerary 🏙️ a. (1 day) Morning flight to Lhasa + Tibet Museum + Norbulingka 🏛️: I recommend visiting the Tibet Museum on the first day, as it helps you better understand Tibetan culture later on 📚. It's best to fly to Lhasa in the morning because the air currents are calmer, making it less likely for flights to turn back ✈️. The Tibet Museum and Norbulingka are very close to each other 👣 b. (1 day) Jokhang Temple + Barkhor Street + Barkhor Mall 🛕: Jokhang Temple is a must-visit temple 🙏. If you want to take portraits 📸, you can also schedule that for this day c. (1 day) Potala Palace + Chakpori Hill Viewing Platform + Tibet Post Office 🏤: I don't recommend doing this on the first day ⚠️, as many people experience altitude sickness at the Potala Palace 😵💫 d. (0.5 day) Starlit Tibetan Herbal Bath 🛁 + Princess Wencheng Performance 🎭: I didn't experience the former, but I really wanted to ✨. I thought the latter was pretty good 👍 e. (1 day) Zhaji Temple + Sera Monastery 🕍: Zhaji Temple is for praying for wealth 💰, and it's busiest on Wednesdays when people pray to the God of Wealth 🔥. Go to Sera Monastery in the afternoon to watch the famous monk debates 🗣️ B. Suburban and Other City Itineraries 🏞️ a. (1 day) Yamdrok Lake + Pumayum Co Lake 💙: Many tours on the market only offer a half-day trip to Yamdrok Lake. I was personally interested in Pumayum Co, so I combined them 1+1 😊 b. (2 days) Shigatse 🚄: A one-day trip is possible, but we like to take it easy, so we did 2 days. Round-trip by high-speed rail. The attractions are just Tashilhunpo Monastery + Shigatse Pedestrian Street + a view of Shigatse Dzong from afar 🏰 c. (1 day) Namtso Lake 🌊: If you're short on time, choose either a or c. I didn't choose this one. It's said that the north shore is better than Yamdrok Lake, but the south shore is not as good as Yamdrok Lake d. (1 day) Shannan Yungbulakang Palace + Changzhug Monastery + Samye Monastery 🏛️: The birthplace of Tibetan culture. It's well worth visiting for those who love culture 📖 e. (1 day) Guru Laco Hike 🥾: A very beautiful heart-shaped lake 💗, but it's best for people with good stamina. It has a 400 m elevation gain and takes 2-3 hours in total ⏱️ f. (1 day) Qiongmu Gangri Glacier Hike ❄️: This should be the only snow-capped mountain near Lhasa that can be done as a day trip 🏔️. It's recommended during the blue ice season 🧊. In Tibetan, the black-necked crane is called "chong chong" — a unique auspicious messenger of the plateau, a national first-class protected animal, and the only crane species in the world that breeds and migrates on the plateau. In recent years, with the implementation of wetland protection and ecological policies in Tibet, their habitat has been increasingly optimized. During the peak wintering season, more than 2,000 cranes can be seen at places like Hutoushan Reservoir and Kazi Reservoir. At sunrise, the sight of cranes flying over the fields under the glow of dawn is especially soothing. From mid to late March until their northward migration in April, farming has already begun in Linzhou, coinciding with the barley sowing festival, where spectacular scenes of cranes circling and dancing are often seen. Around the Milin wetlands, some black-necked cranes migrate to Milin to winter starting in November and leave completely by April of the following year. The black-necked cranes framed by snowy mountains, valleys, and rivers resemble a painting. Heading to the swamps of Nima County or the wetlands of Shenza County, cranes begin breeding in May, offering a chance to see fluffy crane chicks; November marks the arrival of the wintering crane flocks. Staring at the water clears your mind of all distractions. I didn’t see any special visions, but the vast loneliness of the place is addictive. Surrounded by snowy mountains, it’s so quiet you only hear your heartbeat. How to enjoy It’s a two-hour drive on winding mountain roads from Gacha County. The road is twisty but in decent condition. After parking, you’ll hike for half an hour. Take it slow at high altitude and rest if you get out of breath. The wind at the top is strong enough to push you off balance. This is day 3 of the trip, after visiting Gecuo, Nariyongcuo, and Cuona along the way. ✅ Especially the Cuona loop along the border, descending from alpine grasslands to dense primeval forests, then climbing mountains again. From the breathtaking Sapu Snow Mountain to the iconic Sacred Elephant Gate at Namtso, this trip was packed with unforgettable landscapes. I also visited the stunning Gurla Tso, hiked from 4,451 m to 4,862 m with surprisingly little effort, and crossed the famous bumpy road to Sacred Elephant Gate - equivalent to climbing 270 floors! I explored the beautiful Zhegu Grassland, where an incredible rainbow appeared after the rain, and even searched for Tibetan brown bears near Baiga Township (no luck this time!). Despite traveling during Tibet's rainy season and flying through Chengdu's thunderstorms, everything worked out perfectly. ℹ️ Good to know: Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a Chinese visa.
