Alghero is a city of about 45,000 inhabitants in the province of Sarri in northwestern Italy on the island of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. The city's long history can be easily overlooked because of the many World War II fortifications it has seen so many times. Archaeological sites prove the presence of the Ozieri culture here in the 4th millennium BC, while the Nuragic civilization settled in the area around 1500 BC. The Phineas arrived in the 8th century BC, in the metalworking town of Sant'Imbenia in what was later the Arghero region. The Phineas lived here together with the Nuragic people and traded with the Etruscans in what is now Greater Italy. Due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea, Alghero developed into a fortified port city in 1102, founded by the Genoese Doria family. The Doria family ruled Arghero for several centuries, except for a brief period from 1283 to 1284 when it was ruled by Pisa. Later, with the arrival of Catalan colonists, the population of Alghero continued to increase. In the early 16th century, Arghero was recognized by the Pope as a bishopric and royal city, and it developed rapidly economically. Arghero was conquered by force by King Pere III of Aragon (1336-1387), who later actively promoted the colonization of the city and surrounding areas, and because of the attractive privileges he obtained, countless families moved here from different regions of the Aragonese royal family at that time, including Valencia, Mallorca and Catalonia. In fact, they replaced the indigenous people, some of whom were sent as slaves to the Iberian Peninsula and Mallorca. The dialects spoken by these families in Algeria are very similar and come from the same language family. Over time, despite the subsequent decline of the Aragonese monarchy, it settled into its current Catalan form. The Aragonese were followed by the Habsburgs, who ruled until 1702 and continued to expand the city. In 1720, Alghero, along with the rest of Sardinia, was handed over to the Piedmont-based House of Savoy, who, upon their arrival, began a policy of Italianization. In 1943 during World War II, Alghero was bombed by the Allies and its historic centre suffered severe damage. Maybe it’s due to the post-war reconstruction, but now it seems that it has not been affected by the war.
