Kangding truly hides so many surprises! Stop crowding the popular spots; Cuona Lake on Gaersi Mountain in Xinduqiao is my personal hidden treasure. It’s not a fenced-off scenic area. Just search for “Gaersi Sacred Mountain/Cuona Lake (Gaersi Mountain)” on your navigation app. It’s near the Gongga Dressing Table Viewing Platform, part of Zhusan Township’s wild wetlands. At about 4,450 meters above sea level, it’s a typical highland glacial lake. The water is all melted snow from the mountains. In winter, the blue ice that forms is as clear and gem-like as a jewel, while in summer, the water is so clear it reflects the Gongga peaks perfectly. There are no entrance fees or commercial facilities here; you have to explore on your own. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can drive right up, but for two-wheel-drive cars, it’s best to park at the photovoltaic power station and hike 10 minutes to the lake. The wind is strong and the temperature difference is big, so be sure to bring warm clothes, sun protection, and altitude sickness remedies. Standing by the lake, the main peak of Gongga is right before your eyes. If you’re lucky, you can capture the golden sunlight on the mountain and the rolling sea of clouds. But remember, this pristine wild lake must be kept clean—don’t litter, and don’t venture too far on a bike into areas without signal. On rainy or snowy days, be sure to bring anti-skid chains. Xining Baima Temple: An Ancient Hehuang Monastery, the Source of the "Flame" of the Later Spread of Tibetan Buddhism On the Danxia cliff face, a hanging temple is built against the mountain, with the Huangshui River flowing endlessly in front of it. This place not only guards the physical remains of Lachen Gomba Raosai but also rekindles the flame of Tibetan Buddhism after a century-long interruption. On the mid-cliff of Hongyazi Valley in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, a temple seems to grow out of the red Danxia cliff. This is Baima Temple, known in Tibetan as "Mazangguan." Standing in front of Baima Temple, the Huangshui River quietly flows below, and across the river are the modern buildings of Ping'an Town. Covering an area of only 4,516 square meters, this temple is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Qinghai Province. · -- 01 Historical Origins The establishment of Xining Baima Temple is closely linked to a catastrophe in the mid-9th century during the Tibetan Empire. In 841 AD, Langdarma, the last emperor of the Tibetan Empire, launched a large-scale anti-Buddhist movement. Temples were closed, Buddhist scriptures burned, and monks forced to return to secular life or flee. Tibetan Buddhism was still in its infancy, and this movement nearly wiped Buddhism off the Tibetan Plateau. The maximum depth from front to back is only about 10 meters, earning it the title of a "half-room temple." The most widely circulated story relates to the Third Dalai Lama. In the 12th year of the Ming Wanli era (1584), the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso passed through here on his way to Youning Temple and other places. Legend has it that his white horse died here. To commemorate this white horse, devotees made a white horse statue inside the temple, and the temple was thus named "Baima Temple" (White Horse Temple). Another theory suggests that this temple was the first Buddhist temple built in the Amdo region, similar to the White Horse Temple in Luoyang, Henan, hence the name. In Tibetan, Baima Temple is called "Mazangguan," where "Ma" and "Zang" are derived from the names of the two "Three Wise Masters," Mar Shakyamuni and Zang Raosai. 05 A Millennium of Changes Over its more than 900-year history, Baima Temple has undergone multiple destructions and reconstructions. During the Qing Tongzhi period, the temple was first destroyed by war but later restored. In modern times, Baima Temple suffered damage during the Republic of China era and the Cultural Revolution. Despite repeated disasters, devotees have always restored this sacred temple. In 1980, the 10th Panchen Erdeni Master inspected Qinghai and personally held religious ceremonies at Baima Temple, marking the temple’s regaining of its status as a place for religious activities. On August 17 of the same year, Baima Temple reopened, and the scripture hall and monks’ quarters were gradually rebuilt. The current main scripture hall is a three-story brick and wood structure. Snow-covered blue tiles resemble light ink spreading on rice paper, dyeing the white walls and black tiles of Jiangnan into a pure winter scene. Inside the moon gate, a pool of clear water reflects a black canopy boat covered with lingering snow, red lanterns gently sway on the branches, and snowflakes softly fall on the vermilion couplets, with the words "Fortune Arrives at the Small Courtyard" faintly visible in the light and shadow. The breeze sweeps through the ice-cracked window lattice, casting bamboo shadows on the bluestone slabs. Auspicious beasts at the eaves hold fragments of jade, moss on the steps is frosted, and even the ceramic pots in the corners hold half a cup of snowlight. Most enchanting is the winding water corridor, where the curved railing encloses a courtyard of sky light; in the silent snowfall, one can almost hear the wintersweet quietly gathering fragrance on the branches. Climbing the tower and leaning on the railing, the black tiles stack like scales, white snow rolls like waves, and the camphor forest in the distance fades into an ink wash backdrop in the mist. This courtyard holds the poetic code of Jiangnan—not in bold, vivid colors, but in the lingering charm of blank spaces, in the contrast of snow and red, embodying Eastern aesthetics. On the eighth day, we arrived at the Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion located in Hezuo City, Anduo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu. Its full name is "Anduo Hezuo Milarepa Nine-Story Buddhist Pavilion." Although the name is a bit long, it clearly explains its identity. It was originally built in the 42nd year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1777), but the original pavilion was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The existing building was reconstructed in May 1988 and completed after four years. The Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion was built to commemorate Milarepa. It is a representative monastery of the Kagyu sect (White Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism in the Anduo Tibetan area.
