Regret not taking the kids earlier? This summer getaway is cool and uncrowded
Everyone says traveling with kids during summer break is a “trial” — crowded places, high expenses, and restless kids. But honestly, some places are really underrated. They either have natural coolness from mountains and water or rich cultural experiences that can calm even the most energetic kids. Plus, travel costs vary widely, from a 2-hour high-speed train ride to direct flights out of the province. I’ve tested these eight spots for you. Some were surprises, some require a bit of skill, but the whole family said “no regrets” after the trip.
01 Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Hunan
In summer, don’t rush into the crowds at Phoenix Ancient Town in Xiangxi.
If you’re with kids, I recommend focusing on Dehang Grand Canyon. ⏰ Enter the canyon around 3 PM. Sunlight filters through the cliffs, and the stream is cool enough to chill watermelon. The Qiaozhai Bridge spans overhead, and kids will look up and shout with excitement. After the canyon, visit Shibadong Village, where you’ll find authentic Miao houses and stone paths, not just tourist facades.
⚠️ Phoenix Ancient Town is most crowded after 7 PM. If you have kids, avoid staying in the riverside stilt houses—they have poor soundproofing, and bars are noisy until midnight. Stay on the outskirts of the town, about an 8-minute walk to Rainbow Bridge, which is much quieter. 🍜 For breakfast, try the “old brand rice noodles” by Rainbow Bridge. Order a bowl of beef noodles—the broth is rich, and kids can eat half a bowl.
02 Benxi City | Liaoning
Benxi Water Cave is one of those places you don’t want to leave once you enter—it stays around 12°C year-round.
🚄 It’s only a 40-minute high-speed train ride from Shenyang, then a 15 RMB taxi to the cave. ⏰ Arrive before 9 AM to avoid lines. You’ll take a boat inside, with stalactites overhead and an underground river beneath. Kids bundled in light down jackets will be pointing everywhere. ⚠️ The cotton coats rented at the entrance are a bit damp; just bring a windbreaker.
If you have half a day left, visit Guanmenshan National Forest Park nearby. The maple avenue is shaded green in summer, with small streams along the path for kids to splash in. 🍜 At the park entrance, grilled corn costs 3 RMB per ear, brushed with spicy sauce—kids will get their faces messy eating it.
03 Baoding City | Hebei
Baoding is an underrated weekend getaway. During summer break, it offers two satisfying options for families.
If your kids like history, visit Qingxi Mausoleum. ⏰ It opens at 8 AM. Start at Tailin, where the underground palace is open—you can feel the calm atmosphere inside. ⚠️ Don’t go too late; in the afternoon, the sun casts shadows from the stone statues that block faces, ruining photos.
If your kids prefer nature, go to Baishi Mountain. There’s a glass walkway suspended along a cliff 1,000 meters high. My kid was scared at first but crawled across and felt like a hero afterward. 🍜 After descending, try “donkey meat sandwich” in Laiyuan town. The hot sandwich filled with cold donkey meat has crispy skin and tender meat—both adults and kids enjoy it.
If you want water fun, spend a day at Baiyangdian in Anxin. Take a rowboat through the reed marshes. The breeze cools the water surface, much cooler than the city. ⚠️ Boatmen at Lotus Grand View Garden will try to upsell longer routes. Agree on the route and price before boarding.
04 Dongguan City | Guangdong
Guangdong summers are hot and humid, but there’s one exception in Dongguan—the riverside under Humen Bridge.
⏰ Go after 5 PM when the sun is less intense. Standing by the old Weiyuan Fort, the river breeze blows hard. You can see traffic on the bridge and ships in the distance. Walk the fort ruins with kids; the old cannons and bricks help them imagine the Opium War scenes.
📍 Don’t rush off after the visit. Nearby is “Xinji Tofu Shop,” open for 30 years. 🍜 Order a bowl of chilled mung bean soup and a plate of fried tofu. The tofu is crispy outside, tender inside, topped with sweet and spicy sauce. ⚠️ Avoid going during the day—there’s no shade, and you’ll want to escape after 30 minutes in the sun.
05 Shuozhou City | Shanxi
Shuozhou is so off the beaten path that even locals are surprised, but Shahu Pass is worth the trip.
🚄 Take a 1.5-hour high-speed train from Taiyuan to Shuozhou East Station, then rent a car for a 40-minute drive. Shahu Pass is a gate of the ancient Great Wall. Standing on the watchtower, you see loess hills and winding walls on both sides. The desolate feeling will quiet both you and your kids.
⏰ Arrive around 5 PM for soft light. The walls glow warm orange, and shadows stretch long. Walk at the foot of the wall with kids—you can find tiles and pottery shards, but ⚠️ don’t take too many; some might be cultural relics. 🍜 Back in Shuozhou city, try “Youyu mutton soup.” The broth is white and tender, paired with baked flatbread to warm you up.
06 Urumqi City | Xinjiang
Don’t just treat Urumqi as a transfer stop—you can spend a whole day in the city.
The International Grand Bazaar is a must-visit, but ⚠️ avoid noon—it’s scorching. ⏰ After 8 PM, the sun is still up but the temperature drops. Walk the pedestrian street with kids, watch artisans making naan and polishing gems. Kids won’t want to leave.
Spend a morning at Hongguangshan Park. There’s a big Buddha on the hill with few steps, so it’s not tiring to climb. From the top, you see the whole city, distant snow-capped mountains, and endless desert. 🍜 After descending, eat hand-pulled rice with lamb at “Wei’s lamb.” The rice grains are distinct, the lamb stewed tender, and kids fight over the carrots.
📍 Dabancheng is a bit far. If you skip Tianchi Lake, visit Dabancheng Old Town on the way. It’s windy with many windmills that can blow hats off. ⚠️ Bring a light jacket for kids; it gets chilly in the evening.
07 Qianxinan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou
Guizhou is a top summer cooling destination, and Qianxinan is the premium choice.
Maling River Canyon is a natural air-conditioned room, feeling 7–8 degrees cooler inside. The trail runs along the canyon wall, with dripping water overhead and roaring waterfalls below. Half the trail (about 40 minutes) is enough for kids; the full hike will make legs shake.
After the canyon, drive 30 minutes to Wanfenglin. Visit in the evening when sunlight slants between peaks, turning rice fields golden. Cycling is best—rent a parent-child bike for a few yuan, with the kid sitting in front, bouncing along the ridges. 🍜 At the foot of the peaks, “General Bridge fried rice” is a signature dish, made with local corn and eggs. Each grain is distinct, served with a bowl of sour soup to whet your appetite and cool you down.
⚠️ Signal in the mountains can lag. Download offline maps in advance.
08 Wuzhong City | Ningxia
If time is tight, just visit one place in Wuzhong—the Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon Tourist Area.
⏰ Arrive at 9 AM, take a boat into the canyon. The red cliffs rise on both sides, and the Yellow River water is a blue-green. After the boat, climb a short flight of stairs to see the 108 towers, which line the mountain from base to peak. From the top, you see the Yellow River’s big bend.
🍜 Have lunch at a farmhouse restaurant by the scenic area entrance. Try the steamed Yellow River carp—tender meat with few bones, kids can eat most of the fish. ⚠️ Don’t buy souvenirs inside the park—they’re twice as expensive as in the city. Back in town, visit “Guoqiang hand-pulled” for lamb. It’s popular with locals, sold by weight, and eaten with vinegar and garlic.
If you can only pick three places: Maling River Canyon is so cool you won’t want to leave, Benxi Water Cave stays a constant temperature year-round, and Qingtongxia’s Yellow River Canyon in Wuzhong helps kids truly understand the meaning of “mother river.” When traveling with kids during summer break, don’t try to do too much. Spend two days in one place for a deeper experience—it’s much more effective than rushing through four cities. If you’ve had any pitfalls or want to recommend places, feel free to share in the comments.
