Need a nature break near Washington Dulles Airport? The Beaverdam Reservoir Loop Trail in Ashburn was such a nice surprise. One minute you're in the suburbs, the next you're under tall trees with the water sparkling beside you. The loop wraps around Beaverdam Reservoir for about 8.3 miles, mostly on dirt and rock paths with some gravel sections. We loved the mix: wooden boardwalks over little creeks, quiet pine forest, open green fields and wide views over the water. There's even an old rusty truck slowly being swallowed by the forest, one of a few relics left along the trail. We started from Reservoir Park, the newer park on the reservoir run by NOVA Parks. You don't have to do the whole loop. Walk out as far as you like and turn back. · Address: Reservoir Park, 22211 Water Vista Dr, Ashburn, VA 20148 · Hours: trails open dawn to dusk · Price: free · Getting there: drive to Reservoir Park, the entrance is inside the Brambleton Community Park West baseball field complex off Belmont Ridge Road Tips · GPS may not find Water Vista Drive yet, so navigate to Belmont Ridge Road · Wear long pants, some parts are overgrown and ticks are around · Bring plenty of water, it gets hot and humid in summer · Dogs are allowed · Other trailheads include Mt. Hope Road and Tillett Field · Boat rentals (in season) and fishing are available at the park

The National Trust - The Children's Country House at Sudbury is located in Sudbury Hall, a country house in Derbyshire, England. Dating back to 1086, the manor of Sudbury was listed in the Domesday Book following the Norman Conquest. During World War II, an American Army Air Force hospital was situated in Sudbury Park, near the Sudbury Royal Air Force base. In 2020, Sudbury Hall was closed to the public for renovations. During this time, the National Trust consulted 100 child 'ambassadors' to redesign the visitor experience for children. It reopened in October 2022 under the new name, The Children's Country House at Sudbury, featuring areas for dressing up and dancing, a mirror ball, and a neon sign that reads "Party like it's 1699." Sudbury Hall dates back to the Restoration Era, but the architecture by George Vernon is based on Jacobean design, featuring a grand staircase and a long gallery. The house is a two-story red brick building with a Baroque-style front entrance porch, adorned with paired columns on each level and door knockers. The carvings above the porch were crafted by William Wilson. Sudbury houses an extensive collection of portraits of the Vernon family, along with other paintings and fine art pieces. The Children's Country House Museum offers various spaces showcasing an impressive array of toys, including the historic toy collection of Betty Cadbury. Visitors can explore toys from different eras, including many of Betty's prized mechanical toys. Betty's collection is truly unique, representing a lifetime passion for toys. She was regarded as an expert in the field during her lifetime, owning one of the finest collections. The dollhouses are particularly captivating, providing insights into family life and the impact of World War II on childhood during that era. In addition to appreciating the historic mansion, visitors can also explore numerous children's toys from the World War II period.
