Barkam travel guide and discussion

During my visit to the Chengdu Panda Research Base, I spent time exploring the Panda Pavilion. It was a different kind of stop: the exhibits helped me learn about pandas, their daily habits, and the work involved in protecting them. The displays cover panda history, diet, and conservation. I enjoyed the playful height comparison and the illustrated panels, which made the information easy to explore. The panda sculpture and the “Future of Giant Pandas” monument added a thoughtful touch to the visit. If you’re visiting the base, take time to explore the pavilion as well as the outdoor areas. It’s a good indoor break and adds more meaning to the experience. 📍 Location: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu. 🚇 By metro: Take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, Exit A, then transfer to Shuttle Bus 408 to the South Gate. 🚕 By Didi: Set the destination to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, South Gate. 🚌 Inside the base: The official sightseeing bus connects stops around the grounds. A full-price ticket is 30 RMB. #Chengdu #PandaPavilion #ChinaTravel #Travel2026

Some places cling to your memory with their vibe, others with the cool people you meet. Xisuo Village (西索) in Sichuan straight-up hits you with both! This little slice of China is major hidden gem energy 🌟. Wandering through Xisuo’s stone houses, I was constantly stopping for a closer look. Picture this: dreamy painted doorways, intricate wooden windows, balconies exploding with fresh flowers, and entrances decked out in colorful vibes. Every corner is sooo photogenic! Seriously, your phone gallery will thank you! 📸 too bad I am not a professional! I snagged a shot of the info board on the main street, and get this: Xisuo’s traditional homes date back to the mid-Qing dynasty. Most have been officially named as provincial-level protected cultural heritage sites—major bragging rights if you’re into history! These stone buildings are all about keeping the Jiarong Tibetan traditions alive. Stacked closely at varying heights, the whole village gives castle-core feels when you see it from afar. Solid walls + those detailed windows = pure aesthetic goals. Xisuo is home to 72 households, with most locals working in farming and tourism. It’s wild to think these dreamy houses aren’t just Insta worthy—they’re actual people’s homes. So, when you’re snapping pics, always respect residents’ privacy! But what seriously made my trip? I met a local lady selling handcrafted beaded necklaces by her door. She told me she blessed the lotus flower pendant herself, which is such a wholesome touch 💖. Now, whenever I wear it, I get all the feels thinking about her kindness, this village’s unique details, and centuries of history in those stone walls. This is exactly what I chase when I travel: places that wow you visually, teach you something new, and connect you with genuinely awesome locals. Basic Info for Your Visit: 📍 Xisuo Village (西索), Sichuan, China ⏰ Opening hours: Usually open all day, but the best action is in the morning or early afternoon. 💡 Travel tip: Explore the village on foot, hunt for those painted entrances and decorated wooden windows, and always be chill when photographing homes. #hiddengems #tibetanculture #slowtravel #chinatravel #sichuan

Lixian currently has no high-speed rail station, but there are several easy ways to reach it: 🚌 Bus (best value): Take a bus from Chengdu Chadianzi station directly to Lixian. The trip takes about 3 hours and costs around 60 yuan per person. You can also transfer from Xinnanmen station. 🚙 Self-drive (most flexible): From Chengdu, take the Wenma Expressway or National Highway 317. The whole trip takes about 3–3.5 hours. The "Lixiaolu" route connects snow mountains, red rock beaches, and forests with stunning scenery along the way. ⚠️ Mountain roads have many curves. Watch for landslides during the rainy season. New drivers should be cautious. 🚄 High-speed rail + carpool: Take the high-speed rail to Dujiangyan station, then carpool to Lixian. About 50 yuan per person. Lixian bus station has buses to Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Maerkang, and other places. 🏨 Where to stay? Lixian offers a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets: · Around Bipenggou scenic area: guesthouses with views of snow mountains and forests from the window, 200–500 yuan per night. · Taoping Qiang village / Gergou: experience Qiang and Tibetan culture by staying in characteristic guesthouses or enjoying the natural hot springs of Gergou. 📸 Must-visit spots (20℃ green wonderland) 1️⃣ Bipenggou | Known as "little Switzerland of western Sichuan," shaded all the way Longwang Sea is clear green, and Panyang Lake reflects the snow mountains. Short sleeves during the day, but bring a light jacket or windbreaker for mornings and evenings. On July 27, Milaro is 16–26℃, Ganbao Tibetan village 17–28℃. 👒 Sunscreen is essential: The highland UV rays are extremely strong. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are all must-haves, even on cloudy days. 👟 Shoes and altitude sickness: Trails have many stone slabs and slippery boardwalks. Wear non-slip flat shoes. Bipenggou is at a high altitude, so walk slowly and avoid running. Bring two oxygen bottles if you are prone to altitude sickness. 🙏 Respect the culture: When visiting Tibetan and Qiang villages, do not step on prayer flags or mani stones. Ask permission before photographing residents. Keep quiet inside Qiang villages and avoid disturbing people. 🚫 Avoid pitfalls: Don’t trust unlicensed roadside taxis (they charge 150 yuan per person). Mountain roads have many curves during the rainy season, so drive slowly. To save money, stay and eat in small county shops. 🎯 Key points: The right way to explore Lixian—see snow mountains and lakes at Bipenggou, explore the millennia-old fortress at Taoping Qiang village, soak in natural hot springs at Gergou, and photograph red rock beaches at Liantaigou. Three days and two nights cost about 800–1,200 yuan per person to experience the Tibetan and Qiang secret spots and enjoy a 20℃ summer. Just 3 hours from Chengdu, go before more people discover it 🌿

The choice of Western Sichuan routes mainly depends on your time and physical strength. Here are some of the most classic and highly recommended itineraries: 3-Day Short Loop (Best for Beginners) Chengdu → Siguniang Mountain (Shuangqiao Valley) → Danba Jiaju Tibetan Village → Moxi Park → Tagong Grassland → Xinduqiao → Honghaizi → Kangding → Chengdu. This route has a high density of scenic spots, including snow mountains, Tibetan villages, grasslands, and exotic stone forests. The journey is short with relatively gentle altitude gains, making it suitable for weekend trips or first-time visitors to the plateau. 5-Day Classic Loop (Including Daocheng Yading) Day 1: Chengdu → Kangding → Honghaizi → Xinduqiao; Day 2: Xinduqiao → 18 Bends of the Sky Road → Litang → Shangri-La Town; Day 3: One-day tour of Daocheng Yading; Day 4: Return via Tuer Mountain → Litang → Tagong → Danba; Day 5: Danba → Siguniang Mountain → Chengdu. Choose this route if you want to experience the "last pure land of the blue planet" and the core scenery of Western Sichuan all at once. 7-8 Day Grand Loop (In-depth Panoramic) Based on the 5-day route, this adds the Seda Buddhist Academy, Eye of Gnie, Xinlong/Ganzi, and other secret spots in northern Sichuan, or completes the long Yading route (Five Color Lake, Milk Lake). If you have ample time and can adapt to higher altitudes (such as Daocheng and Seda), this route offers the most complete visual enjoyment, but it is long and involves many days of driving. 3-4 Day Seda Cultural Route Chengdu → Dujiangyan → Siguniang Mountain → Danba → Daofu → Seda → Guanyinqiao → Maerkang → Chengdu. This is more suitable for those interested in Tibetan Buddhist cultural sites and not focused on intense snow mountain trekking. Mid-May is the perfect time to visit Western Sichuan, as the grasslands begin to turn green and rhododendrons bloom. For first-timers, it is recommended to prioritize the 3-day short loop or the 5-day classic route. If you encounter rain or snow on Zheduo Mountain, you can detour via Provincial Road 434. Remember to bring sun protection and warm clothing, and try to avoid bathing on the first night at high altitude to prevent altitude sickness.

If you're planning a trip to Western Sichuan and are tired of the hustle and bustle of mainstream tourist spots, I highly recommend pinning "Gengda Temple" (更达寺) in Maerkang on your map. This ancient Nyingma sect temple is peacefully nestled in the crevices of Faluo Mountain. The highlight that left me completely speechless is the "32 Golden Pagodas" lined up along the hillside. When the sunlight hits them, the radiant gold contrasts beautifully against the deep blue sky and lush green mountains in the background—it's utterly breathtaking. Plus, there are majestic statues of Guru Rinpoche and a giant Avalokitesvara standing prominently. The best part is, it's "Free entry! No ticket required," and there are very few people! (Hardly any Chinese tour groups). You can walk around and take exclusive photos. The atmosphere is serene; you can hear the birds, the wind, and local villagers spinning prayer wheels (there's a giant 6-meter-tall prayer wheel here that you can join in spinning for blessings). It's an absolute must-visit spot for merit-makers and photography enthusiasts. 💡 [Travel Tips] How to get there conveniently, fast, and on a budget? If you don't do your homework before traveling to this zone, transportation costs can skyrocket. Here is the method I tried that works and is the most cost-effective: 1. Starting from Chengdu to Maerkang: The fastest and most economical way: Take a coach from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站) straight to Maerkang. It takes about 4-5 hours. The expressway is very smooth, and the ticket costs only a few hundred Thai Baht. It's much better than renting a car and driving yourself from Chengdu, saving you thousands. 2. From Maerkang city center to Gengda Temple (Key point): The temple is located on Meigu Street, not far from the center of Maerkang. Absolutely do not walk there yourself: Because the temple is on a hill, the path is quite steep and exhausting. The most cost-effective way: Use the Didi app (Chinese ride-hailing) to call a car straight from your hotel in Maerkang to the temple. It's very cheap (just a few dozen RMB), convenient, fast, and you definitely won't be overcharged. If you come in a group of 3-4, splitting the fare costs almost nothing per person. 3. Top tricks for photo lovers & spiritual seekers: Outfit: I recommend wearing a "white outfit" or light-toned clothes. When taking photos with the golden pagodas and the red-and-white Tibetan architecture, the contrast is stunning and very photogenic. It feels like stepping into a sacred land. Walking direction: When walking around the temple or spinning the prayer wheels, always walk "clockwise." This is to show respect and follow local customs. Altitude matters: Maerkang is at an altitude of about 2,600 meters above sea level (and Gengda Temple is slightly higher). For Thais, this might take some getting used to. I recommend taking it easy on the first day—walk slowly, sip water frequently, and it's a good idea to carry altitude sickness medicine (like Rhodiola) or canned oxygen with you.

If you ever find yourself in Barkam and skip a trip up to Changlie Monastery, you're missing out big time! Perched on the Changlie mountain peak at an altitude of about 3,400 meters above sea level, this historic Nyingma sect monastery dates back over 800 years. It has been magnificently restored, seamlessly blending traditional Tibetan artistry with modern touches. ✨ What Impressed Me the Most: · Exquisite Architecture: The 6-story main building is incredibly unique. Inside, you'll find Nepali-style golden Buddha statues, white marble pillars, and Italian chandeliers (an unlikely combo that is surprisingly gorgeous!). · The Largest Prayer Wheel: The highlight is a colossal "golden prayer wheel" that monks constantly walk around and spin. The ringing bells and the palpable devotion here create an awe-inspiring, goosebump-inducing atmosphere. · Million-Dollar Views: From the monastery's balcony, you'll be treated to endless views of snow-capped mountain ranges. It's a prime photo spot where every click of the shutter yields a stunning shot. 💡 Travel Tips (From Personal Experience): 1. Getting There: From downtown Barkam, I recommend taking a taxi or chartering a car up (around a 40-minute ride). The road is steep and full of twists and turns, so if you're prone to motion sickness, make sure to bring meds. 2. Best Time to Visit: Aim to arrive before 10:00 AM. The weather is pleasant, not too hot, and the lighting is absolutely perfect for photography. 3. Recommended Walking Route: After parking, don't rush straight into the main building. Head left along the dirt path to "spin the prayer wheels" (clockwise). It takes about 20 minutes before you proceed to the main hall. 4. Preparation: · Sun Protection: The sun is brutal up here (high UV). A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are absolute must-haves! · Clothing: It might be warm down in the city, but it gets incredibly windy and chilly at the summit. Be sure to pack a windbreaker or a long-sleeved shirt. 5. Etiquette: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the hall where the Buddha statues are enshrined. Please maintain silence, as this is a sacred place of practice. Bottom Line: This is a deeply serene destination, perfect for finding peace of mind and soaking in the snowy peaks. If you're a fan of culture and nature, I guarantee this place is the real deal! 🏯🙏

If you're visiting Barkam in the Aba Prefecture and skip a trip up to Changlie Monastery, you're seriously missing out! This is an 800-year-old Nyingma Buddhist monastery standing proudly at an elevation of 3,400 meters. The atmosphere up here truly feels like stepping into a whole other world. ✨ Personal Impressions The main hall is absolutely magnificent. Pristine white marble pillars with intricate dragon carvings beautifully contrast the traditional painted wooden ceilings adorned with luxurious chandeliers. And you simply can't miss stepping out onto the temple balcony. You'll be treated to a panoramic view of the majestic, layered snow-capped mountains and the sea of clouds blanketing Barkam city below. It's so peaceful and sacred that all your travel fatigue will just melt away. 📍 Travel Tips 1. Getting There: It takes about a 40-50 minute drive from downtown Barkam. The route is a winding mountain road with switchbacks that can be quite steep and narrow in certain spots. Sedans can make it up, but you'll need to drive with extreme caution. Opting for an SUV or hiring an experienced local driver is your best bet. 2. High Altitude Awareness: Since the monastery sits at 3,400 meters, take it slow. Don't run or jump around (no matter how breathtaking the views are!) to avoid altitude sickness. 3. Best Time to Visit: Aim to arrive in the morning around 9:00 - 10:00 AM. The lighting is stunning, and you'll get a crystal-clear view of the valley fog. If you visit in the afternoon, the harsh sunlight reflecting off the golden roofs can make photography a bit tricky. 4. Etiquette & Dress Code: The temple grounds are incredibly serene. Please be respectful and refrain from taking photos inside the main hall where the Buddha statues reside (photography is only allowed on the balconies and outdoors). Also, remember to always spin the prayer wheels in a clockwise direction! 5. Clothing: Even if it's warm down in the city, the mountaintop is much colder and quite windy. Be sure to bring a windbreaker or a warm jacket. Conclusion: This place is packed with incredible positive energy. There's no entrance fee, but you'll definitely walk away with a full heart and National Geographic-worthy shots!

If you think the temples in Tibet are stunning, wait until you see Changlie Monastery in Aba Prefecture. It’s not just a religious site; it feels like a "golden temple floating in the clouds" sitting at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level. ✨ What makes this place special: · Architectural masterpiece: The intricately carved stone dragon pillars wrapped around the temple are absolutely exquisite. The walkways are as shiny as mirrors, perfectly reflecting the sky and snow-capped mountains (just like in my photos, but trust me, it’s 10 times more magnificent in person!). · Pure tranquility: Because it isn’t overrun by tour groups yet, you can actually hear the prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the soothing chants echoing through the mountains. · Million-dollar views: From the temple’s balcony, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Eastern Plateau. 💡 Traveler Tips: 1. Getting there: The monastery sits atop Changlie Mountain, about a 45-minute drive from downtown Barkam (Maerkang). I highly recommend hiring a local driver because the mountain roads are incredibly steep and winding. The paved roads are in good condition, and regular sedans can make it, but you definitely need an experienced driver. 2. Watch out for altitude sickness: At 3,400 meters high, it’s crucial to take it easy. Walk slowly and don’t get too carried away running around for photos. Be sure to bring altitude sickness medication or a portable oxygen canister just in case. 3. The best time to visit: Aim to arrive in the morning (9:00 - 11:00 AM). The sunlight hitting the golden roof is spectacular, and the weather is still cool. If you're lucky, you might even catch a sea of clouds blanketing the city below. 4. Must-capture photo spots: Head to the balcony hall with the white dragon pillars and shoot outward to capture the snow-capped mountains in the background. Don't forget to point your camera down at the reflections on the marble floor—it creates a stunning illusion of the temple floating in the sky. 5. Dress code: This is a strict place of worship, so dress modestly (no shorts or sleeveless shirts) and remember to take off your hat when entering the temple grounds. In short: If you're traveling through Western Sichuan and want to avoid the massive crowds you'd find in places like Seda, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary. It's beautiful, peaceful, and incredibly powerful!

Navigate to "Changlie Temple," about a 40-minute drive uphill from Malkang city center. The road conditions are decent but winding, so if you get car sick easily, prepare medication in advance. At an altitude of 3,400 meters, take it slow. No entrance fee. When you arrive, don’t rush into the main hall. Be sure to spin the row of prayer wheels at the entrance first. There’s a local belief that you can touch the six-syllable mantra at the bottom of the 49th wheel, and locals always make a point to find it. The main hall is truly magnificent—white marble pillars, Nepalese golden Buddha statues, Italian chandeliers, an eccentric but strangely harmonious mix. Remember to remove your hat and sunglasses and keep your voice down when entering. After touring the hall, head to the back mountain meadow, where you’ll find cows and horses grazing. If the weather is good, you can sit for a while and enjoy the snow-capped mountain views. The vegetarian dining hall offers meals: buffet for 25 RMB per person, small hot pot for 30 RMB, the taste is decent, but the best part is dining with a view of the snowy mountains. Suggested itinerary: Arrive before 10 AM → Spin prayer wheels (20 minutes) → Tour main hall (30 minutes) → Relax in the back mountain meadow → Lunch at the dining hall → Descend the mountain ⚠️Note: Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! It’s windy on the mountain, so bring a hat and sunglasses. Avoid strenuous running or jumping; take it easy. There aren’t many tourists here, it’s quiet and peaceful, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.

The Zhuomudiao Conference Site is located in Baishe Village, Jiaomuzu Township, Maerkang City, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province. The site was originally the Ruobuluo Temple (Baisha Lama Temple), with Qing Dynasty sister watchtowers standing nearby. The octagonal stone watchtower is well-preserved and is designated as an Aba Prefecture-level cultural relic protection unit. On October 5, 1935, Zhang Guotao held a meeting here for cadres at or above the army level, historically known as the Zhuomudiao Conference. At the meeting, Zhang Guotao openly opposed the Party Central Committee's northward strategy and announced the establishment of a "provisional central committee," attempting to split the Party and the Red Army. Zhu De, Liu Bocheng, and other comrades upheld principles and fought resolutely against these separatist actions, emphasizing that the Red Army must maintain unity, obey the leadership of the Party Central Committee, and oppose separatist activities. The Zhuomudiao Conference was a severe intra-Party struggle during the Long March. This history serves as a warning to future generations about the great significance of upholding the Party's unity. As an important historical site of the Long March, it has become a red education site where people can look back on this tortuous journey, appreciate the firm belief of the older generation of revolutionaries in upholding Party spirit and maintaining the unity of the entire Party and army, and remember the valuable historical experience of maintaining Party unity on the Long March. Due to road construction, the direct road to Jiaomuzu Township is blocked. After consulting, you can take a detour from Songgang Town through Qili Village and over the mountain. This rural road is approximately 30 km long and is the shortcut from Songgang Town to Jiaomuzu Township via Qili Village, consisting entirely of rural roads and river valley paths. The section from Songgang Town to Qili Village is narrow, making it difficult to pass other vehicles; you will often need to reverse to yield. The section from Qili Village to Jiaomuzu Township extends westward along Township Road 001 (Songsha Road), following the rural road along the Jiaomuzu River, passing through villages such as Dabakou Village and Shenshan Village before reaching Zhuomudiao. You will need to find passing spots in advance when encountering other vehicles throughout the trip. ⏳Visit time: Free admission, 30 mins–1 hour.

Have you ever had this experience—planning a trip to Seda, only to be "sidetracked" by an unknown town along the way? I have. Last autumn, while driving along National Highway 317, I originally just planned to stop in Guanyinqiao Town for a night, but ended up staying for three days. Later, I learned that travelers heading to Seda often say Guanyinqiao is the "first touch of red on the road to Seda." In my opinion, this red is far more intense than I imagined. Let's start with a number: 0. Free admission, free parking. In today's Western Sichuan, where admission fees often cost hundreds, this Guanyin Temple, known by Tibetans as the "Second Lhasa," is open for free all year round. 🔥 Why is it worth a special trip? Guanyinqiao Town is located in Jinchuan County, Aba Prefecture, at the junction of the plateau and the plains. It is a key node on the Tibetan-Qiang cultural corridor connecting the Jiuzhaigou loop and the Western Sichuan loop. The town is small but holds great significance— Guanyin Temple (Tuojiqinbo Monastery) is built on the hillside of Nale Sacred Mountain at an altitude of 3,685 meters. It belongs to the Nyingma school (Red Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism and houses the famous Four-Armed Guanyin. It is known in the Tibetan region as the "Second Lhasa" and the "Second Putuo Sacred Site." A local mother performing full-body prostrations told me something I still remember: "After circumambulating this Guanyin, this journey will not have been in vain." The "spirituality" of Guanyin Temple is renowned. Founded in the 7th century, the temple has a history of 1,200 years and is one of the three major Guanyin pilgrimage sites in China. Every year during the first month of the Tibetan calendar, pilgrims from five provinces—Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet, and Yunnan—flock here. Guanyinqiao Town itself is also significant. It was the seat of the Chuo Si Jia Tusi (chieftain) in the Qing Dynasty. Chuo Si Jia was one of the 18 Jiarong Tusi, with jurisdiction spanning today's Jinchuan, Rangtang, and even Seda areas. Walking through the town, you can still see the ruins of the Jiarong Tusi ancient city and the words "Tiancheng Guanyin" (Heaven-made Guanyin) on the Tibetan-style carved gates. 🗺️ Comprehensive 2-Day 1-Night Itinerary Day 1: Chengdu → Lixian → Guanyinqiao Town → Old Street → Guanyin Temple → Tusi Official Residence → Jinchuan Valley · 7:00 AM: Depart from Chengdu, take the Duwen Expressway → Wenchuan → Lixian → Maerkang → Guanyinqiao Town. The total distance is about 390 km, taking about 6 hours. Sedans can make the trip, but there are many curves, so drive steadily and slowly. · 1:00 PM: Arrive in Guanyinqiao Town and settle into your accommodation. The town is at an altitude of about 2,560 meters, more than 1,100 meters lower than Guanyin Temple, making it an ideal first stop for altitude acclimatization. · 2:30 PM: Stroll through Guanyinqiao Old Street, view the Tibetan-style carved architecture, and experience the lifestyle of the Jiarong Tibetans. · 3:30 PM: Drive up Nale Sacred Mountain to Guanyin Temple. It takes about 20 minutes on a mountain road from the town to the temple parking lot; the road is narrow and winding, so drive carefully. We recommend spending 1–2 hours exploring, spinning the prayer wheels clockwise, and visiting the Four-Armed Guanyin Hall. · 5:30 PM: Head down the mountain and stop by the Tusi Official Residence ruins on the way. · 6:30 PM: Take a walk along the Jinchuan Valley and wait for the sunset. · 7:30 PM: Enjoy a Tibetan hot pot in town, paired with Jinchuan pears, which are sweet and refreshing. Day 2: Morning mist at Guanyin Temple → Jinchuan Valley (or Lover's Sea) → Return · 6:30 AM: If you have the energy, get up early and head back to Guanyin Temple to see the prayer flags and snow-capped mountains in the morning mist. The temple is almost empty in the early morning, with only the sound of chanting and the wind. · 9:00 AM: Head down for breakfast, then choose between two options: · Option A (Spring exclusive): Around April, go to Sha'er Township to see the ten thousand acres of pear blossoms. Jinchuan pear blossoms are one of the most spectacular sights in Western Sichuan in spring. · Option B (All-season): Visit Lover's Sea, an alpine lake and a sacred place for love in Tibetan legend. · 12:00 PM: Depart after lunch and return to Chengdu by evening. 🏨 Hotel Recommendations (Bookable on Trip.com) ① Guanshan Jinglian Resort Hotel (Guanyinqiao Branch) Located in Guanyin Village, Guanyinqiao Town, about 1 km from the town, offering a quiet environment. The facilities are new, with floor heating, private bathrooms, and bathtubs in some room types. The owner is welcoming and provides authentic Tibetan food; the handmade dumplings and home-grown vegetables are signature items. Suitable for altitude acclimatization and as a transit stop. ② Jinchuan Liaoshe Inn The location is superb—situated directly below Guanyin Temple, just a 1 km walk or 1-minute drive to the temple. The entire villa stands alone on the hillside, nestled between mountains and water, overlooking the entire Guanyinqiao Town. You can watch the clouds roll by or gaze at the starry sky. The owner grows many flowers, will proactively upgrade rooms, and the food is also very delicious. ③ Xiyate Hotel Located on Chuo Si Jia Street in Guanyinqiao Town, it offers a variety of room types with views, including the "Jijing · Shanhe Wujie Panoramic Luxury Twin Room." The facilities are relatively new, suitable for travelers seeking comfort. 🍜 Food Recommendations · Tibetan hot pot: A signature dish in Guanyinqiao Town, made with local Jinchuan pears in the pot, which is sweet and refreshing, offering a completely different flavor from traditional spicy hot pot. · Butter tea + tsampa: The most authentic Tibetan breakfast combination. A bowl of butter tea at a local teahouse costs 5 yuan. Sitting by the window and daydreaming while looking at the valley is more healing than any cafe. · Hand-grabbed yak meat, beef buns, highland barley wine: We recommend trying these at Guanyin Lizhong Restaurant or Anqu Tibetan Restaurant. 📖 Cultural Story: Why is this temple called the "Second Lhasa"? Guanyin Temple houses a naturally formed Four-Armed Guanyin statue. Legend has it that a long time ago, while a local farmer was plowing on Nale Sacred Mountain, his plow hit a stone, which split open to reveal a Four-Armed Guanyin statue. As the news spread, believers came to worship, and the temple was built as a result. Over the past 1,000-plus years, this Guanyin has been regarded by Tibetan believers as one of the most efficacious incarnations of Guanyin. The temple holds a very high status in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and is directly under the jurisdiction of the Baiyu branch's throne holder, Garwang Nyima Rinpoche. Every year during the first month of the Tibetan calendar, pilgrims from the five Tibetan regions travel along the mountain road, performing full-body prostrations, a scene that is truly moving. Guanyinqiao Town itself is also a living museum of Jiarong Tibetan culture. The Chuo Si Jia Tusi ruled here for hundreds of years, leaving behind the ruins of the Tusi Official Residence and a unique Jiarong architectural style. Walking through the old street, the Tibetan-style carved doors and windows, prayer flags, and mani piles all tell the stories of this land. 📋 Quick Reference Table Item Information Admission Free (both Guanyin Temple and the scenic area are free) Opening hours 8:00 AM–6:00 PM (weekdays); 9:00 AM–5:00 PM (temple chanting time, recommended to avoid early morning and evening) Best season Best in summer and autumn; pear blossoms can be seen in April–May Altitude Guanyinqiao Town is about 2,560m, Guanyin Temple is 3,685m Driving route Chengdu → Duwen Expressway → Wenchuan → Lixian → Maerkang → Guanyinqiao Town, about 390 km/6 hours Road conditions The 70 km road from Maerkang to Guanyinqiao has complex conditions with many large vehicles; it usually takes 3–4 hours Suitable for Cultural pilgrimage enthusiasts, self-driving enthusiasts, photography lovers, parent-child study tours Tips to avoid pitfalls: There is a flight of stairs from the Guanyin Temple parking lot to the temple, and the altitude is 3,685 meters, so walk slowly and don't rush. Do not take photos inside the temple, and circumambulate in a clockwise direction. It is recommended to book accommodation in town on Trip.com in advance, as rooms are in high demand during peak seasons (April pear blossom festival, National Day).
