First and foremost, my opinions are influenced by my own personal travel experiences in the UK, so all the opinions are relative to my home country and are my own original thoughts! Many people think of China as being a densely populated country, filled with immense skyscrapers creating the illusion of living somewhere in the future somehow. And while this rings true for some places (Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen etc), a great majority of tourists never see the vast, verdant, rural areas which make China one of the most beautifully diverse countries on the planet. One way to see this luscious Chinese oasis is to travel cross country by high-speed rail. The infrastructure of China is something to behold. Convenient, clean, punctual, stress-free, affordable- Chinese trains are everything that British trains are not. If you buy a ticket in China, you can cancel it for free up until your just before your departure time. You can change the ticket twice too, without charge, if you need to change plans. You order the ticket using your passport number, so you queue up when your gate is called and scan in with your passport. From your gate being called to getting on the train takes a maximum of 15 minutes. British trains offer online tickets, but from my experience, refunds are difficult and laborious. If you get on the wrong train or the wrong time you receive a big fine. If you miss your train, you didn't used to be able to claim it back (I'm not sure you can now either). Our train was due to leave Zhangjiagang station at 0746, and it left the station at 0746. This is not to naively say that all Chinese trains are on time every time, but late delays are a rarity. Once our train was delayed by five minutes, but the hundreds of our other journeys have been on time. To compare this to England, I can't remember the last time I caught a train that hadn't been delayed or cancelled or modified. A simple trip, from Halifax to Leeds, is consistently late for one reason or another. Both train systems are consistent, just in opposing ways! The journey from Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu to Changsha in Hunan is a collosal 723 miles (1165 kilometres). To put this into context, it's a similar distance from Land's End to John O'Groats is by car. It takes 5 hours and 47 minutes by bullet train, and cost us (two adults and two children) ¥1218/£135 in total. The UK drive would take a whopping 17 hours, in good traffic! For contrast, a train journey in the UK would take at least 22 hours, a coach 24-35 hours, plane 6-10 hours, or you could walk it in about 70 days! Walking would be the cheapest option, obviously, but pitching fees, hotel fees, food costs need to be factored in too, making it a very expensive excursion 🤣 You'd spend £150-300 on petrol, at least. UK trains are not budget friendly, costing between £100-300 per person! And, while some cheap deals exist, bus and coach travel costs way more than the China train and takes so much longer. Some trains in England are outdated, dusty and wear a pungent odour usually reserved for damp, dark underpasses in inner city areas. My memories of crowded trains with no spare seats, sitting outside the perpetually opening toilet door in stuffy uncomfortable conditions travelling from north to south in my army days, still sit unfavorably in my mind. The Chinese trains I've travelled on have been clean, free from graffiti and vandalism and are all-round pleasant places to spend hours travelling. On this train now, I have just ordered a takeaway from a station restaurant to my seat in my train carriage and a coffee from the train shop. All of the things I bought came to less than ¥120/£13, including delivery fee TO THE TRAIN! The best you can hope for in Britain for that price is a tasteless sandwich, a pack of McCoy's salt and vinegar, a snickers bar and a weak coffee heated to 258°c. But, to be honest, I'm not sure you'd even get that much for £13! The UK is a place that takes captive audience money milking extremely seriously, and the paper cups of coffee you could get for a pound in the town centre, suddenly quadruples in value on a train. Cynicism aside, this is unfortunately a true reflection of Britain and it's ever inflating (like a rich man's waistline) costs. China, on the other hand, is all for making necessities affordable for it's people and visitors to the country. My final thoughts are about the intensely beautiful scenery you encounter on a standard journey in China. You may start the journey in a built up city, fly through a rural and agricultural area, traverse mountainsides, whizz through forests of lush greenery and speed over the Yangtze river all in one journey. Don't be fooled into thinking all of China is imposing structures and tinned sardine-like crowding issues. The countryside is so picturesque, so diverse, so unexpected that the train journey is a trip in itself! Britain has some stunning views too. Coastal routes with cliff top views, mountainous terrain in Scotland and Wales and some unique architectural big city designs to keep you satisfied on a journey. Calderdale and all of Yorkshire have some truly amazing scenery which provide a feast for your eyes. Unfortunately, you also have sweary chavs talking a bit too loudly (although Chinese travellers aren't exactly quiet!!), many run down urban areas, scratched windows, constant delays, the threat of stones being thrown at the windows, drunk scallywags, dirty seats, cramped trains, benign conversation, outdated carriages, open drug use, high ticket prices, slow journeys, overpriced essentials and an altogether more stressful journey. I'm British and this post isn't to diss Britain (much), it is simply to highlight the differences between the countries and to show how it could and should be done in England, if the government actually cared for it's people! So next time you visit China, try a long distance train to another city other than Shanghai and Beijing. Absorb the absolute scenes of the countryside, enjoy the experience of travel tailored towards the consumer and open your eyes to a whole new world. Everyday Services In many cities, things like haircuts, manicures, or minor repairs are way more affordable than in Europe or North America. Of course, not everything in China is cheap. Renting an apartment in a major city center or buying imported goods can be pricey. However, it’s the daily expenses that usually catch tourists by surprise. Thanks to advanced logistics, high competition, and mass production, many everyday conveniences are much more affordable than you’d think. ❓ What would surprise you most: the cheap metro, the delicious street food, or getting almost anything delivered for pocket change?

Most tourists flock to Badaling, but I headed to Mutianyu—and I didn’t regret it for a second. Just 73 km from the city center, yet it felt like stepping into another world. Quiet mountains, a gentle breeze, and absolutely no lines. By 10:30 AM, I was already standing on the Great Wall, with maybe 10 other people around. 🏯 Granite instead of bricks—feeling the centuries pass Unlike other sections, this part of the wall is built with granite slabs rather than bricks, which explains why it’s so well preserved. Measuring 4–5 meters wide and 7–8 meters high, it feels incredibly solid. As I ran my hand over the stone, I couldn't help but think: these slabs were laid over 600 years ago. Six centuries later, and it’s still standing strong. 🛡️ Double-sided watchholes—something I’d never seen before There are watchholes on both sides of the wall here, allowing defenders to fend off enemies from two directions at once. Standing by one of them and looking down into the valley, I tried to picture the ancient soldiers in battle. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. 🎢 My route: Cable car, hiking, and a thrilling toboggan ride I took the cable car up to Watchtower 14, then hiked over to Tower 6—passing by 22 towers along the way. Every 100 meters offered a fresh view and a new discovery. When I finally needed a break, I hopped on the open-air toboggan and zoomed down the 1.5 km track. You control your own speed—I went so fast the wind was howling in my ears! It was an absolute blast with just the right amount of thrill. 🌄 The "Big Horn"—now I get the tactical genius The wall takes a dramatic dip into the valley before climbing steeply back up, forming a massive "V" shape. This was intentional: they’d lure the enemy into the lowlands and ambush them from both sides. Pure tactical genius! Plus, the views are out of this world, with lush greenery covering over 90% of the slopes. Word has it that in autumn, this place turns into a vibrant sea of fiery yellows and oranges. 🛤️ Getting there (it's easier than you'd think) I caught a tourist bus from Beijing at 8:00 AM, departing near the Qianmen Street subway station. Following the signs from the subway, I easily found the boarding area with the help of friendly staff in blue vests. Fast forward 2.5 hours, and I was on the Wall. Prices: Entrance fee is 45 RMB. The cable car is 60 RMB one-way, 100 RMB round-trip. The toboggan ride is another 60 RMB. I opted for a combo ticket for 140 RMB (cable car up + toboggan down) and paid by card with zero hassle. Timing: Open until 6:00 PM. I arrived around 10:30 AM, and it was practically empty. By 2:00 PM it started getting noticeably crowded, but it was still way more relaxed than Badaling. 💡 My tried-and-true tips · Bring water and snacks—there are no cafes up top, only near the entrance. I didn't bring any, and by 1:00 PM, I was dying for a drink. · Wear shoes with solid grip—the stone steps can be slippery even when dry. A few bandaids wouldn’t hurt either; I ended up with a blister two hours into my hike. · Pack a windbreaker—it’s much breezier up high than in the city, even during the summer. · The ultimate itinerary: Cable car up to Tower 14, hike to Tower 6, and slide down on the toboggan. You can see a lot in one day, but the earlier you go, the more you'll see without huge lines. 🎢 2. The most popular attractions first Don't waste the first few hours shopping and taking photos. Go straight to the most interesting attractions, and then just stroll around and take photos. 🧙♂️ 3. Harry Potter is a must Even if you're not a fan, the themed area is very atmospheric. And if you love the universe, it's a whole other level. And be sure to try the butterbeer 🍺 🧸 4. Buy some merch! It's truly part of the fun. Goodies, hats, ear flaps, T-shirts—bring whatever you like. I brought a Goofy hat with ear flaps, and in Russia, it unexpectedly got more attention than I expected 😂 📸 5. Make time to just stroll around Don't try to spend the whole day just running around the rides. There are so many decorations and details that you'll want to photograph. Each themed zone feels like you're inside a movie or cartoon. 🍔 6. Food Get a snack right inside the park to save time going out. And yes, the butterbeer is worth trying just for the experience itself. 🌙 7. Don't leave too early The park looks completely different in the evening: the lights turn on, creating a particularly atmospheric atmosphere, and after sunset, you can take photos without worrying about anything. 💡 Top tip: Think of Universal Beijing not as a regular amusement park, but as a whole day spent inside your favorite movies. You’ve probably seen those beautiful photos of the Temple of Heaven — stunning blue skies, the iconic blue-and-gold architecture, and wide open spaces with almost nobody around. Well… here’s the reality! 😂📸 Tiantan Park is absolutely gorgeous, but it can get seriously crowded, especially around the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Getting a clean photo without someone walking into the frame can feel like a mini mission! 😆 Still, once you look beyond the crowds, you can really appreciate how impressive this place is. The traditional architecture, vibrant colours and enormous surrounding park make it one of those places that feels completely different from anywhere else in Beijing. My advice? Go early in the morning if you want fewer people and better photos. If you're in Beijing and want to visit the Great Wall of China, you have two options: with a tour or on your own. If you want to go on your own, I recommend the Mutianyu section. We specifically left Beijing around 7:00 AM to arrive just before it opened and have time to walk around before the main crowds. Mutianyu currently opens at 7:30 AM, and tickets can be booked up to 30 days in advance on the official website. Getting there from Beijing: We chose the easiest option—a taxi directly from Beijing. On the way there, the driver offered to wait for us there for a few hours and then pick us up. This turned out to be very convenient: no need to wait for the bus or figure out how to get back after the walk. Our driver didn't even charge us for waiting—we only paid for the roundtrip. 🫶🏻 The total cost was 460 yuan. If taxis seem too expensive, there are also direct tourist buses from Beijing. They take about 1.5–2 hours, and a roundtrip usually costs around ¥80–¥140. How much does a visit cost? For two of us, a visit to the wall cost about ₽4,888 (≈ $58 / ≈ ¥390). The price depends on which ticket option you choose: entrance only or adding a shuttle, cable car, and other options. During high season, I would definitely buy a ticket in advance—popular sections have restrictions on the number of visitors. Why it's best to go in the morning: This is probably the most important tip. We arrived just before opening, so there weren't many people at first. Tourists become significantly more numerous later, especially in summer and on weekends. Also, it's easy to spend 3–4 hours on Mutianyu if you don't just want to climb up, take a photo, and leave, but actually walk part of the wall. We walked quite far—roughly toward the twentieth towers. The further you go, the more challenging the climbs become. In some places, the steps are very steep, and after a few of these sections, you clearly understand that the Great Wall of China is more than just a walking path 😅 We spent about three hours on the wall. The only thing we were unlucky with... The weather. There was very thick fog on Mutianyu, and at times visibility was literally twenty meters. So we barely saw those panoramic views where the wall stretches into the distance across green mountains. But even in the fog, the place is impressive in its scale. If you have the option to choose a day, I would definitely check the visibility and cloud forecast before your trip. How I recommend doing it: Depart Beijing – around 6:30–7:00 Mutianyu – opening at 7:30 3–4 hours to the wall Return to Beijing – around lunchtime That still leaves half a day for the city. Mention Beijing food and one dish usually comes to mind first: Peking duck. It deserves its reputation, but walking through the city’s hutongs showed us a much broader side of the local cuisine. We visited four small restaurants hidden among the narrow streets. Each stop introduced a different flavour, cooking style and part of Beijing’s culinary history. 🥘 Copper-Pot Hotpot Our evening began with traditional Beijing hotpot served in a copper pot. Thin slices of mutton and beef were cooked in a clear broth, then dipped into a rich sesame sauce. Unlike heavily seasoned hotpots, this version allowed the flavour of the meat to remain the focus. The copper pot, rising steam and shared table also made it feel like much more than an ordinary dinner. 🍝 Handmade Beijing Noodles At another stop, we watched noodles being prepared from scratch in a hutong courtyard. The dish looked simple, but its appeal came from the combination of freshly made noodles and a deeply flavoured sauce. It was the kind of everyday local food that can easily be overshadowed by Beijing’s more famous dishes, yet it was one of the most memorable parts of the evening. 🍘 Beef-Filled Fried Buns A small Muslim restaurant introduced us to another side of Beijing cuisine. The fried buns had a crisp exterior and a juicy beef filling, creating a satisfying contrast in texture. We also tried an old Beijing speciality that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. This stop was a reminder that the city’s food traditions were shaped by several cultural influences, not by one single style of cooking. 🌯 Fresh Spring Pancakes Our final dish was a plate of freshly made spring pancakes. The thin pancakes were filled with vegetables and other ingredients, then rolled and eaten by hand. They were light, colourful and completely different from the rich hotpot that had started the evening. They also made a surprisingly good conclusion to a tour with so many contrasting flavours. Check if they differ from your country's standards and buy a universal adapter in advance. Hotels don't always provide them. 😉 💵 2. Money and Payment Apps · Exchange some of your money for yuan cash—keep it as a backup. · Download Alipay, verify your passport, and link a foreign card. You can pay in two ways: directly from your card by scanning it or from the built-in wallet—choose what's most convenient! · Download WeChat and set up WeChat Pay as a backup. WeChat is also useful for communicating with guides and hotel staff. 🌐 3. eSIM and Navigation. China isn't the kind of country I'd recommend approaching with the attitude, "Well, people live there too, we'll figure it out." You'll figure it out. But some things are better known before, not after, your first visit to a restaurant, using the restroom, or trying to order a taxi. I've compiled everything I wish I'd known before my trip. ———————— 1. Finding familiar Chinese food can be unexpectedly difficult. For the first three days, we ate at European restaurants and even McDonald's. Not because we didn't want to try Chinese cuisine. On the contrary, we really wanted to. It's just that at some point, finding a place with food whose ingredients I understand and trust isn't so easy. Even at McDonald's, the menu is a little different from what you're used to, and the prices can be an unpleasant surprise. My advice: don't be afraid of Chinese food, but carefully check the ingredients and ask about the spiciness. Moreover, "not spicy" in China and "not spicy" in our country are sometimes two completely different things. I've compiled a separate list of restaurants and chains where you can eat well without worrying about quality or your wallet—it's on my page. —————— 2. Bring a fork If you're not very confident with chopsticks, pack a couple of disposable forks in your suitcase. For example, I've been using chopsticks for over 15 years. In Japan, locals even complimented me on the way I eat with them. Then I came to China and suddenly felt like a newbie. Chinese chopsticks are slightly different in size, and it took me a while to get used to them. And disposable forks weren't always available in stores. ——————— 3. A translator will become your best friend We didn't know Chinese. Most of the Chinese people we interacted with didn't speak English. And you know what? No big deal. Everyone pulled out their phones, turned on the translator, and somehow came to an agreement. Just allow a little extra time for communication and be prepared to explain one simple idea three different ways. We used offline translators from Google and Yandex. Google worked better for us, especially when we needed to translate a photo. Our driver used Baidu translator, and it turned out to be the most accurate. ——————— 4. Install WeChat at home I highly recommend this. For some reason, I decided I could do without it. In the end, I deeply regretted it a couple of times. It's often much easier to contact a tour guide, driver, hotel reception, or trip organizer through WeChat. And I couldn't set it up properly in China. So, download the app, register, and set it up before your flight. Trust me, it will come in handy. ——————— 5. Get an eSIM with a built-in VPN We used two: Trip.com and a Y-eSIM. Both worked fine. Sometimes one would slow down, but the other would immediately save the day, so we weren't left without service. The option with the built-in VPN was especially convenient. If you need a link to the app with eSIMs, let me know, and I'll share it. ——————— 6. Don't rely too much on maps Forget the usual Google Maps and Apple Maps. In China, they only work with a VPN, and they have little information (since the Chinese themselves don't use them). We used Amap, and overall, it was very helpful. But it's not perfect. Several times, we arrived at the address we were given only to find that the store or cafe was no longer there. Amap also doesn't always help us navigate inside huge shopping malls: there's noticeably less information on each floor than we're used to on Google Maps. Therefore, it's best to check several sources before traveling. —————— 7. The Chinese subway is simpler than it seems This is where you can relax. The subway in Chinese cities is very convenient and easy to navigate: lines are marked with colors and numbers, navigation is available in English, and inside the cars, the current and next stations are constantly displayed. Airports shouldn't be intimidating either They're huge, but the logic is pretty much the same everywhere. Signs are practically everywhere, and if you don't understand something, just ask the staff. It's best to immediately open a translator: even at airports, the staff's English can be quite basic. ——————— 9. Don't expect to buy everything on the spot Some attractions in China require advance reservations, and tickets can sell out. I knew that. Then I arrived, got carried away by the trip, forgot everything I knew, and almost missed out on the Forbidden City. I found an emergency solution, but I was pretty nervous. So, check your tickets for popular attractions before you travel. ———————— 10. Carry your passport with you at all times. Don't leave it in your room. In museums, some train stations, amusement parks, and other places, your passport can effectively replace a ticket or be required for inspection. And in Beijing, you might even be asked to show it during a street check. So, your passport is your main passport in China. ———————— 11. If you're not staying in a hotel, there's an important caveat. If you're staying in an apartment, a friend's apartment, or other private accommodation, you must register your residence within 24 hours of arrival. If you're staying in a hotel, the management will handle this. But if you're renting an apartment yourself, you'll need to register it yourself with the police. ——————— 12. There are plenty of public restrooms. A lot! On the streets, in the metro, in shopping malls, in parks... But there's a catch. Instead of the usual European toilet, you often see a "hole in the floor" type. And toilet paper isn't always available. Sometimes there is, but not in a stall, and you'll only notice it when it's too late. You need to get it from a special machine before entering. So, my universal Chinese set: paper napkins + wet wipes. Always. —————— 13. And be prepared for unusual hotel restrooms. And I'm not talking about magical toilets with heated seats and a bidet function. In three different rooms we stayed in, the toilet doors were... transparent. Yes, sometimes with frosted glass. But still, quite transparent. If you're traveling with others, just be prepared for the fact that your bathroom privacy may be a little different. I don't know how common this is, but we have three out of three transparent bathroom doors. ————— 14. It's better to prepare your payment in advance. I used several methods. I paid on Trip.com with a Russian card. I saved it in advance and disabled the SMS confirmation option—my Russian SIM card was disabled. I also installed Alipay. I also got a UnionPay card from Rosselkhozbank and linked it to NihaoChina. It wasn't accepted everywhere, but I was able to pay for large expenses—bathhouses in Beijing, shopping at shopping malls, duty-free, museum tickets. I did most of my online shopping through Dewu, linking Alipay to it. So, my advice is simple: don't rely on just one payment method. Have several options ready. ——————— 15. Therefore, I would advise communicating as much as possible with ordinary people, not just hotel staff and tour guides. It's in such conversations that China begins to reveal a completely different side (one of our excursions was literally saved only by the Chinese people we found ourselves in the same tour group with!). —————— 17. Don't try to plan everything down to the minute. China is huge, and it will constantly throw a wrench into your plans. You might suddenly run out of tickets. You might find a restaurant closed. You might see a store on the map that no longer exists. You might misunderstand each other. And that's okay. Before your trip, China may seem complicated: a different language, different apps, a different payment system, unfamiliar food, huge cities. When we planned our trip to Beijing, we bookmarked a few spots to experience the local cuisine. Among them were the famous Chinese dumplings that many know from the recommendations of Russian blogger Alexander Zubarev. They are called Dumpling Xi / 喜家德 (Xijiade), a major dumpling chain across China. Where to find them? We visited the branch right in the heart of Beijing — on the 6th floor of the Beijing APM mall on Wangfujing Street. It’s an incredibly convenient option if you’re exploring the city center: Wangfujing, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and other major landmarks are all nearby. You won’t have to trek to the outskirts just to get your dumpling fix. Since it’s a large chain, there are many locations throughout Beijing and other Chinese cities. Just pick the one that’s most convenient for your route. What to order? There’s no need to fear the massive Chinese menu here. The restaurant’s main specialty is, of course, Chinese dumplings. By the way, it’s super convenient that you can order and pay for everything online through the Alipay app. As I mentioned in another article, this app is basically your second identity in China, so make sure to download it! They offer varieties with pork, vegetables, shrimp, and various combination fillings. Fan favorites include pork with vegetables, shrimp with multiple fillings, and dumplings with whole succulent shrimp. We decided to try a few different options to see how they compared. And that’s where the real magic happens. The secret is in the sauce 🥟 I think many tourists expect Chinese dumplings to be like the ones we have at home: meat filling, dough, a side of sour cream—and you’re done. But here, it’s a completely different story. You can assemble your own dipping sauce right at the table using chili oil, garlic, vinegar, fresh herbs, pepper, and other condiments. This DIY moment truly transforms the flavor of the dumplings. The pros recommend a mix of chili oil, garlic, a splash of vinegar, and fresh herbs. How much does it cost? It’s a very budget-friendly spot. At the location we visited, the average check is currently around 42 CNY per person, which is roughly 500–550 ₽ depending on the exchange rate. A single serving of their signature dumplings costs 33.9 CNY, and beer ranges from 6 to 12 CNY. The portions are generous enough for a full meal. You get about 15 large dumplings per serving, which is more than enough for one person. Prices may fluctuate slightly, so it’s best to check the menu when you order. Are they truly the best dumplings in Beijing? We won’t claim they are objectively #1 in all of Beijing—the city is massive and the dumpling options are endless. Plus, we only had time to try them at this one chain during our short stay in the capital. However, as an option for a tourist wanting to try high-quality Chinese dumplings for the first time, we loved it. The convenience is a huge plus; we were just walking through the center, popped into Beijing APM, had a great meal, and continued our tour. It’s now clear why this chain is so frequently recommended to those visiting China for the first time. A few personal tips for first-time visitors📝: 🗓️ I highly recommend scheduling your visit for the afternoon! We went in the morning and it was packed, which compromised the experience. If you just walk around on your own, you'll end up just taking photos and leaving.
