The Golden Rule: Payment Method is Everything If you have Alipay set up, you’re living in one world. If you don’t, you’re in another, significantly less convenient one. That’s no exaggeration. With Alipay: You see a fixed price before the trip, and all service tiers are available—Economy, Standard, Comfort, Premium, and then some. Requests go to DiDi private drivers, and I wasn't assigned a yellow city taxi even once. The fare is deducted automatically; there's no need to haggle or count change. Without Cashless Payment: You only have access to yellow city taxis via the app, and only in two versions—Standard and Comfort. You pay the driver in cash. The price is unknown beforehand; you ride strictly by the meter. The Price Difference Yellow taxis are more expensive. Based on my trips, they cost about 10–15% more, and sometimes even more. There was one case where DiDi showed an expected cost, but the meter ended up being ten yuan more—roughly a third higher. How the meter works (using Chongqing as an example): 10 yuan for the flag-drop, which includes the first few kilometers, then about 2 yuan per kilometer. Then we navigated a massive staircase to bypass a closed section, and I finally caught my breath: 'Well, that’s it, now it’ll definitely get easier.' Spoiler: it didn’t 😂 Before the trip, I spent a long time choosing which section of the Great Wall to visit from Beijing. Badaling is closer, but the photos and reviews of the tourist crowds terrified me. So we chose Mutianyu—we wanted a more picturesque section and at least a few less people. I didn’t even consider a tour: I don’t like walking in groups or being dependent on someone else’s schedule. At first, we planned to go by public transport; I even found instructions, but then I looked at the route, the schedule, and the travel time—and we decided not to overcomplicate our lives 😂 🚕 A taxi from Beijing cost about 200 yuan one way, and the ride took about an hour. We bought tickets a few days in advance through Trip.com—about 4,000 ₽ for two. The price included the entrance fee, the shuttle bus, and the round-trip cable car. We got onto the wall around 12:00. Our plan was this: head from Tower 14 toward Tower 23, and then head back. 🧱 At first, I didn’t understand why everyone was so dramatic. Yes, there are climbs. But you walk, you stop, you look around—it’s beautiful. The wall snakes along green ridges, tower after tower, surrounded by mountains. The weather managed to change several times in a few hours: rain, fog, then sun. At one point, the wall was literally swallowed by clouds, and then everything opened up again. But on the wet stones, it turned out the soles were still more slippery than I would have liked. So now, I’d definitely say: you need closed shoes with really good grip here. But the hardest moment was still ahead. 🥲 That’s where I wanted to turn back Near the section closed for restoration, we had to get off the wall and go around via a long staircase. And it was *really* long. We climbed, stopped, climbed again… And keep in mind, the Great Wall was toward the end of our trip through China—our legs were barely holding up by then anyway 😂 When we finally reached the top, I thought: 'That’s it. That was definitely the hardest part.' Very optimistic of me. Then the steep steps started again. And that’s when I said, 'That’s it, I don’t want to go any further.' My boyfriend was struggling too. He just doesn’t whine at every obstacle like I do 😂 I was mentally ready to turn back. But it was so frustrating to have walked so far and not finish. So he basically said: 'Since we’re here, let’s go.' We went. We stopped for water, sat down, admired the view, and kept moving. In terms of physical difficulty, for me personally, this route is an 8/10. 🏔️ But the further you go, the more beautiful it gets And here is the most interesting part. The harder the route became, the fewer people there were. Near the far end of the wall, there’s a completely different feeling: none of the crowds from the beginning, you can just stop and look around in peace. That’s when I finally realized that photos of the Great Wall don’t convey the elevation changes at all. Before the trip, I had imagined the wall itself to be taller for some reason. It turned out to be lower than I expected. However, its length and the way it runs right along the mountain ridges were much more impressive. You look ahead—wall. You look back—also wall. You go down—there’s another climb ahead 😂 And all of this set against green mountains. 🍺 And at the end, a reward awaited us We actually made it to where we planned. They even sold medals for completing the route. But we decided to reward ourselves differently. With liquid gold 😂 We got a beer for 60 yuan. After all those stairs, sitting at the top, looking at the mountains, and drinking a cold beer was so wonderful that at that moment, those 60 yuan weren't even up for debate 😂 💧 What I would definitely keep in mind before the trip Bring more water. We took about 0.5L per person—that wasn't enough. You can buy water on the wall; there are sellers even quite far along the route, but it’s more expensive there, of course. And if you have knee problems, I wouldn’t make it a goal to go all the way to the farthest section. At Mutianyu, you don’t have to repeat our route at all. You can go up, walk the easier part of the wall, see the views, and still be blown away. ⭐ Was it worth it? Yes. Definitely. My rating is 8/10, and I would go back again. Moreover, if someone is visiting Beijing for the first time, I wouldn't skip the Great Wall at all. In the moment, it was hard. I wanted to turn back. The Yonghegong Temple (Lama Temple) is the largest and best-preserved Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the heart of Beijing. Originally built in 1694 as a prince’s residence, it was converted into an imperial monastery in 1744. Today, it’s not just a museum but a living temple where hundreds of worshippers gather daily. Outside of Tibet, it is also widely known as the Lama Temple. ✨ Architecture: A unique fusion of Chinese, Tibetan, and Manchu styles. The golden roofs, intricate carvings, and massive Buddha statues are absolutely mesmerizing. The highlight is the world’s largest Buddha statue carved from a single piece of sandalwood—standing at a staggering 18 meters tall, it is truly breathtaking. Many people come here to pray rather than just sightsee. Watching them light incense and chant mantras makes you realize this isn’t just a tourist spot; it’s a place of deep spiritual significance. 🙌 Logistics: We arrived at 11:00 AM and bought tickets at the entrance with no wait. Tang / 唐 — Open, Wealthy, and Cosmopolitan. The Tang Dynasty ruled from 618 to 907. This was a time when Chang’an—modern-day Xi’an—was one of the largest and most international cities in the world. Through the Silk Road, goods, ideas, religions, music, fashion, and people from all over Asia converged here. I’d remember Tang through these three words: Silk Road. Xi’an. Cosmopolitanism. When you see reconstructed Tang architecture in Xi’an, the vibrant costumes, the dances, and the evening glow of the Grand Tang Mall / 大唐不夜城—that is a modern reimagining of that specific era. Ming / 明 — Palaces, Walls, and Monumental Order. The Ming Dynasty ruled from 1368 to 1644. This is where travelers encounter the "classic" China they recognize. It was under the Ming that Beijing finally became the imperial capital, the Forbidden City was built in the form that defines the complex today, the Temple of Heaven was developed, and massive sections of the Great Wall were rebuilt and fortified. Short answer: I wouldn't pick just one. I’d install both. Because they solve slightly different tasks, and they work especially well as a pair. Amap / Gaode Maps — my main candidate for China itself. Why? Because it understands Chinese reality better: local addresses, metro stations, entrances, exits, stops, routes, and object names in Chinese. That is, if the task is: “How do I actually get from here to the right place?” Amap is usually more useful. Especially when it comes to: hotels; stations; specific entrances; metro stations; the correct exit; cafes; shops; tourist attractions. And here’s the main plus — the detail. In large Chinese cities, the difference between “I arrived at the station” and “I left through the right exit” can sometimes be another 15–20 minutes of walking 😄 But there is a downside. Amap can be intimidating at first because of the interface and the amount of Chinese text. If you are used to the simplest maps possible, your first encounter might be something like: “Great. Everything is clearly here. Now I just need to figure out where” 😄 However, Organic Maps is more convenient in other ways. It’s a cleaner, more intuitive map that is especially good for offline use. You can download the necessary region in advance and then use the map even without internet. For me, this is an excellent backup option. For example: to understand where you are; to see the surrounding streets; to navigate on foot; to check the general route; to not be left without a map at all if the internet goes out. And for that reason, I definitely wouldn't delete Organic Maps. But if comparing specifically for navigating a Chinese city, searching for local spots, and transport — I would give the edge to Amap. The breakdown is roughly this: Amap — precise navigation within China. Organic Maps — a reliable offline backup. If you are going for the first time, I would do this: install Amap; save your hotel, stations, and main points there; download the necessary cities or regions in Organic Maps; and keep both maps handy. Because when traveling, I don’t follow the logic of: “Which app will win?” But rather: “What will I open if the first one doesn't help for some reason?” 😄 And one more important point. Don't wait for the first day of the trip to start figuring out the map. It’s better to open your future hotel at home, check the nearest metro, try building a few routes, and save a few points. Five minutes of such preparation really turns the app from: “What is this even?” to: “Ah, okay. I get it now.” My choice for China: Amap — primary map. Organic Maps — backup offline map. And I would keep both. Because the space they take up on your phone is far less than the peace of mind they provide in an unfamiliar city 😄

The Great Wall of China is one of the 7 Wonders of the World, dating back thousands of years. It was built to protect against Mongol invasions. While there are many sections of the wall you can visit, today we are highlighting Mutianyu, which is located about 70 kilometers from Beijing. The main reason we chose this section is that we were traveling with elderly family members and needed a convenient experience that didn't involve too much walking. This section features a cable car that goes straight to Watchtowers 13 and 14, which was absolutely perfect for my mother. Additionally, Mutianyu is beautifully preserved and not overly crowded, allowing for a comfortable walk without the squeeze of tourists. Getting there is incredibly easy. We booked a one-day tour via Trip.com using the Zanbus service for about 600 THB per person. The day before our trip, the staff contacted us via WhatsApp to confirm the meeting point and time. When it was time to depart, we simply met at the designated bus stop. On the bus, a Chinese-speaking guide shared stories and history about the Great Wall. Once we arrived, the guide allowed us to explore on our own and set a time for us to meet back for the return trip. Pro-Tip: We visited in December, which is winter. The weather was extremely cold, though it didn't snow. I recommend bringing a heavy winter coat and anti-slip shoe covers (in case of snow). You should also pack your own water and snacks for the journey, as there are no shops on the wall itself, though there are very clean restrooms available. Entrance Fee: 40 CNY. We purchased these through the guide. Upon arrival, we just scanned our passports to board the shuttle bus, take the cable car, and enter the site. It was extremely convenient.
