Yufuin and Beppu have very different personalities. Yufuin is known for its picturesque streets, cafés, boutiques and Lake Kinrin, while Beppu is famous for its spectacular geothermal activity and hot springs. Yufuin and Beppu are relatively close, but doing both in one day requires careful timing. The sight is completely different from Yufuin: Yufuin = 🌿 peaceful & elegant Beppu = 🌋 volcanic & dramatic Umi Jigoku is part of Beppu's famous Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour). Hyotan Onsen is a day-use onsen in the Kannawa area and currently lists opening hours of 9:00 AM–midnight, so an evening visit fits nicely into the itinerary. If you've been to Japan a few times and feel like you know the country quite well, I think you should try going south. Kyushu gave me a very different feeling about Japan. The first time I saw pictures of Takachiho Gorge, I had a feeling: I absolutely had to go there. And when I actually set foot in Kyushu, I realized that the most attractive thing about this place wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of a more liberal, open Japan, less constrained by familiar rules. The pace of life was also more relaxed. And the nature… was truly breathtaking. Kyushu is a geological area with many active volcanoes, so it has mountain ranges, gorges, lakes, hot springs, and magnificent landscapes created by millions of years of Earth's movement. Mount Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Sakurajima (Kagoshima Prefecture) are two of Japan's most active volcanoes. Thanks to its intense volcanic and geothermal activity, Kyushu also accounts for approximately 35% of Japan's total hot spring (onsen) sources, with famous hot spring towns like Beppu and Yufuin. Much of the island is covered by hills and giant caldera formations created after ancient eruptions. In particular, it's a land steeped in Japanese mythology. There are places where you can not only admire the scenery but also feel like you're stepping into an ancient tale. Initially, I planned to use the Seishun 18 Kippu pass to explore Kyushu by local trains, traveling through different regions. However, after researching, I discovered that the most beautiful places in Kyushu are often not located near train stations or with convenient public transportation. The Takachiho Gorge, mountainous areas, valleys, and volcanic landscapes are often located deep within nature, requiring additional local buses or taxis for transportation, making it quite complicated. Therefore, I chose a day tour with private transportation. If you're looking for a more unique Japan than Kyoto, Tokyo, or Osaka, try Kyushu. You might discover a Japan you've never known before.

I used to think Beppu’s “Hell Tour” was just the same thing with different names, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Cobalt blue springs, blood-red ponds, and bubbling mud pits. And for some reason, even a massive amount of crocodiles...! Visiting all seven revealed that each has its own distinct personality. It was way more fun than I expected ♨️ First, the vivid cobalt blue "Umi Jigoku" (Sea Hell) was absolutely stunning. 🌊 The blue is so beautiful it’s hard to believe it’s a hot spring, and the rising steam creates a truly mystical atmosphere. It looks refreshingly cool, yet it’s actually incredibly hot—a fascinating contrast. Then there’s the bright red "Chinoike Jigoku" (Blood Pond Hell). 🩸 The entire pond is stained red by hot mud containing iron oxide, giving it a powerful “hellish” vibe exactly as the name implies. Seeing it right after the blue Sea Hell makes the color contrast even more striking. Oniyama Jigoku is also known as "Crocodile Hell." 🐊 They use the geothermal heat to raise crocodiles, and the park is packed with them! I never expected to see crocodiles on a hot spring tour, so this definitely left a lasting impression. My personal favorite was "Kamado Jigoku" (Cooking Pot Hell). It features various ponds from "1st District" to "6th District." At the "Throat Steam" spot shown in the photo, you can experience 100°C steam. The sheer volume of steam is incredible—just walking through it makes you feel like you’ve truly arrived in the hot spring capital of Beppu. What’s so fascinating about the Hell Tour is how diverse the scenery is—blue, red, mud, steam, and even crocodiles—despite them all being hot springs. Since I was traveling solo this time, I stayed in an 8-tatami mat room. Believe it or not, there was even a water dispenser in the room 😳✨ You do have to lay out your own futon, but that actually lets you relax at your own pace ◎ All the essential amenities and a yukata are provided, too. It connects Hakata Station in Fukuoka with the renowned hot spring resort Yufuin Station (with some services extending to Beppu). The train is famous for its emerald green retro exterior and warm wooden interior. Since all seats are reserved (no unreserved seating) and it's incredibly popular, be sure to book your tickets well in advance if you want to ride. Lake Kinrin is also a must-visit! The shrine in the water ⛩️ is absolutely stunning. It's the most famous natural landmark in Yufuin, located just a 20-minute walk from Yufuin Station. The most unique feature of this lake is that both fresh water and hot springs bubble up from the bottom, keeping the water warm year-round. When temperatures drop sharply in winter or early in the morning, the warm lake water meets the cold air, creating a dreamy, magical scene shrouded in morning mist. I'd love to stay here for a night if I get the chance 💕
