Having visited Hokkaido so many times, I’ve experienced spring, summer, autumn, and winter. While the snow-covered, dreamlike winter scenery remains my most unforgettable memory, I also highly recommend visiting in the autumn. During this season, Hokkaido’s layers of color are as vibrant as a spilled paint palette. The weather is cool, but it hasn't reached the bone-chilling cold of the snowy months. Best of all, since the roads aren't yet covered in thick snow, driving is much easier. You won't need to stress over navigating snowy conditions, allowing you to cruise along the highways and effortlessly soak in the endless autumn colors outside your window. In addition to the traditional maple leaves, autumn in Hokkaido also hides some incredibly soothing spots to view Kochia (summer cypress). For instance, Yuni Garden, just an hour’s drive from Sapporo, features expansive hills blanketed in Kochia that shift from vibrant green to bright and deep reds. These fields of round, fluffy little balls are less crowded, making for off-the-charts cute photos. You can also find Kochia at the Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park, located in the Sapporo suburbs. Of course, the main event is absolutely the autumn foliage and ginkgo trees. Take Jozankei Onsen, for example—the entire town is surrounded by mountains blanketed in red, yellow, and green leaves. #slowtraveling Tomakomai is a pulp-mill town south of Sapporo, but 15 min from the station the Shin-Tomakomai coast opens into a mossy forest park: the Tomakomai Higashi Coastal Forest, part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park fringe. I took the JR Hidaka line from Sapporo (¥1,940, 1h20m), walked 20 min to Tomakomai Shrine (small, cedar-shaded, free), then followed the signed forest path 2 km to the coast. The forest is old-growth oak and birch with a moss floor 5 cm deep after rain. The path ends at a black-sand beach where the moss gives way to driftwood. Best in May–June (no mosquitoes yet) or September (salmon run smell in the river mouth). No toilets in the forest—use the shrine restroom. Mistake: I wore white sneakers. The moss stains, the forest mud stains more. A shrine volunteer lent me a walking stick and said “the forest doesn’t end at the shrine gate, it just gets quieter.” Is a coastal forest still coastal if the moss decides the floor?

Ordering is super convenient—just scan the QR code with your phone to view the menu and place your order. There's absolutely no language barrier for foreign tourists, so there is no need to worry about not understanding a Japanese menu. We ordered a few signature dishes, and the overall taste was quite good: Chicken Neck (Seseri): This was definitely the MVP of the night! The meat was super bouncy and juicy with a hint of charcoal smoke. Paired with the chopped green onions, grated radish, and lemon juice on the side, it was incredibly refreshing and went perfectly with drinks. Highly recommended! Tsukimi Chicken Meatball & Mini Sashimi Bowl: The chicken meatball was incredibly smooth when dipped in the rich raw egg yolk. The mini sashimi bowl was beautifully presented and the ingredients were very fresh, though the types of sashimi served were slightly different from the menu. Beef Tongue: The seasoning and texture were spot on, but unfortunately, it wasn't piping hot when it arrived at the table. Being just lukewarm slightly affected the flavor, which was a bit of a letdown. Overall, the dining environment was comfortable, the service was fast, and ordering was a breeze. This isn't the LeTAO inside the airport, but rather a large LeTAO Café located in downtown Chitose, just a short distance from New Chitose Airport. 🥞 You absolutely have to try the pancakes here! Besides the well-known Double Fromage cheesecake, I think the pancakes are even more worth trying when you visit Doremo LeTAO. The pancakes are incredibly fluffy with a light, airy texture. This time, I tried the seasonal limited-edition melon pancake. The cloud-like fluffy pancake paired with cantaloupe ice cream creates a delightful hot-and-cold contrast. Situated on the 4th floor of Portom International, slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the domestic area, stepping inside reveals a sophisticated space and attentive service. It offers a relaxing experience that makes you forget you're even in the middle of a trip. The food menu apparently changes every month, and this time, I had the quiche plate. Not only the main quiche, but you could also feel the careful attention to detail in the accompanying salad and deli sides, making everything incredibly delicious with no compromises. Beautifully presented, it was a highly satisfying plate from start to finish. Wine is all-you-can-drink, and you get one free can of beer, with additional cans available for a fee. It makes you forget the typical pre-departure rush, offering a truly special and relaxing time. It's also open to the public as a regular cafe, and menus such as burger and pasta plates are available. It was a luxurious space where you could enjoy your meal and coffee at a leisurely pace. We figured we'd just hang around the domestic terminal before checking into our resort towards the evening! 　　 So, we made a beeline for the 2nd floor of the domestic terminal for some food and shopping!!! This floor is packed with famous stores, souvenir shops, and even a Uniqlo~ Let me recommend some must-buy and must-eat treats at New Chitose Airport!!😘 　　 Sapporo Agricultural College Chitose Airport Factory Store "Rich Freshly Baked Dairy Cheese Cake" Made with Hokkaido milk, and you can only buy it at New Chitose Airport! You'll need to line up for a while~~ Limited to one per person! (My teammate waited for 30 minutes while I took Sweet Potato Ball for a stroll) This is seriously delicious. It tastes like a soft, fluffy light cheesecake, so incredibly soft!! 　　 "Dairy Milk Soft Serve Ice Cream" It's incredibly rich~~~~ and it looks so chubby and cute!! 　　 "Apple Pie" Made with apples grown in Hokkaido, the crust is super crispy, and the filling is a custard made from Hokkaido milk and fresh cream!! Overall, it's amazing, especially when you eat it piping hot right after buying it!! 　　 "Dairy Milk Pudding" Made with Hokkaido milk and eggs. I found the milky flavor quite strong, and I personally loved it! Though my teammate thought it tasted more like panna cotta~~~ 　　 Calbee "Freshly Fried French Fries" and "Freshly Fried Potato Chips" were also things I was really looking forward to this time, I had their freshly fried fries in Harajuku, Tokyo before, and it was unforgettable, Brought Sweet Potato Ball here specifically to try them this time! As expected, they were incredibly crispy and fragrant~~😍 I chose the soy sauce-flavored potato chips, which are exclusive to the New Chitose Airport store. They were a bit on the salty side! A lot of people were buying the pizza-flavored ones too, I'll have to try those next time~ 　　 This is a famous fish paste shop from Otaru. The domestic terminal store has many flavors available, Almost everything you get is piping hot!!!👍 Every type is pretty tasty, so we just ordered whatever we felt like eating!!!! If it's your first time buying, I highly recommend these two options~~ "Pan Roll" uses fresh fish paste wrapped around minced meat, then coated in bread and deep-fried. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside "Hiraten", a classic traditional fried fish cake, has a chewy texture with a hint of natural sweetness from the fish 　　 Many people coming to New Chitose Airport will buy the corn bread from Biei Senshukai, but the line is seriously long!!! Plus, you have to buy five at a time, so we decisively gave up on it~ We found the "Tokachi Corn Bread" from Hanabatake Ranch to be really delicious too, It has a generous amount of filling that bursts in your mouth!!🌽 We also bought the "Hokkaido Red Bean Bread" which was quite nice too~~ Skipping the line makes it totally worth it!!! (Although I don't know how good the Biei Senshukai one actually is!!) Hanabatake Ranch is a famous sightseeing farm founded in Tokachi, Hokkaido by Japanese entertainer Yoshitake Tanaka. I heard their raw caramel is also excellent, I saw people behind me grabbing tons of it to check out~~😅 　　 A lot of people come to buy SNOW. They restock at 8 AM and 3 PM, In between those times, the shelves might be completely empty~~~ However, some surrounding stores might carry it, so you can walk around and check!! We didn't buy any this time because a friend bought some for us to eat before~~ 　　 There is another famous shop whose soft serve ice cream has won the New Chitose Airport popularity vote for 5 consecutive years. That one also had a huge line, so we skipped the airport branch! But we managed to eat it at their city branch, which I'll share about later~~~😎 　　 The 3rd floor of the domestic terminal is mostly restaurants, and we didn't eat there at all!!! Even though I originally wanted to have soup curry! Turns out we got full just from eating all the stuff above!!! Ahahaha🤣 But we did visit the Sanrio store and played the Ichiban Kuji!!! Sadly, didn't win the top prize😭! Their bread made with domestically produced Hokkaido wheat smells amazing~~~ I bought some raw toast (nama shokupan) and a few other pastries to bring back to Taiwan!! If you're flying on a budget airline, I highly recommend buying some to eat in the boarding area!!! Like the corn, ham, and cheese bread (you can't bring this back to Taiwan, though)! 　　 Then......... my biggest regret is missing the Baumkuchen from Kitakaro!!!!!! Because we didn't end up going to Kitakaro in the city this time, I figured they sold it on the 2nd floor of the domestic terminal, But then I suddenly thought maybe the duty-free shops in the international terminal would have it (actually, this idea came from my teammate!)!! So I decided to just buy it after passing through security!!! And surprise, surprise~~~ they didn't have it!!!!
