Columbus, Ohio: What to See in a Few Hours
Columbus turned out to be a great pit stop on my massive US road trip. As Ohio's capital and largest city, it’s a place where a bustling downtown, university life, sports, museums, food halls, and quiet, strollable neighborhoods perfectly coexist.
The city is an ideal road trip destination if you want to look beyond the usual US tourist hotspots and experience the real heart of America: sprawling campuses, charming brick-paved neighborhoods, local eats, wide avenues, and everyday city life.
What to add to your Columbus itinerary:
🎓 Ohio State University
One of the city's defining landmarks. The university feels like a world of its own: the campus, the students, the merch, the die-hard fans, and the absolute cult following of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Even a quick walk around the area shows just how deeply university culture runs in Columbus.
🏡 German Village
A historic neighborhood featuring brick houses, quiet streets, and a wonderfully inviting vibe. It’s worth a visit just to walk around, admire the architecture, and soak up that old-school Americana feel. A fantastic option if you're looking to explore the cozier side of the city.
📚 The Book Loft
A 32-room bookstore nestled right in German Village. Just the description alone makes it a must-visit. You can easily lose track of time getting wonderfully lost among the shelves, tiny rooms, and winding book corridors. An absolute must for fans of unique, atmospheric bookstores.
🎨 Short North Arts District
A vibrant district packed with galleries, restaurants, bars, boutiques, and iconic lighted arches spanning the street. It’s the perfect spot to hit up in the evening when you want to mix some great food and a nice walk with a more lively city rhythm.
🍴 North Market
A lively food market offering a huge variety of local eats. It’s a super convenient stop: you can grab a quick bite, sample some local flavors, and avoid the hassle of deciding on a sit-down restaurant.
🌊 Scioto Mile
A beautiful downtown riverfront offering stunning views of the Columbus skyline. It’s great for a scenic walk, snapping some photos, and wrapping up your trip on a relaxing note. It’s especially nice to check out right after exploring downtown or the North Market.
📌 A quick itinerary for a few hours
German Village, The Book Loft, North Market, Short North Arts District, Scioto Mile.
If you have a bit more time, you can easily squeeze in Ohio State University and the museum district.
Columbus really shines as a road trip stop: it’s free from the overwhelming hustle and bustle, offering easily walkable neighborhoods, a massive 32-room bookstore, undeniable college-town energy, and a genuine slice of big-city America away from the typical tourist traps.
