Mersey Viewing Point is a quiet and exclusive spot in Devonport, Tasmania. There were less than 6 visitors during the time when I was there. A short stroll to the viewing point brings you close to the waves, rocks and coastline. There is a huge carpark there and public toilets too. The path from the carpark to the viewing point is about a 10min walk. I spotted a cute wallaby amongst the trees during my time there. For those who do not drive, bus 170 and bus 171 serve the area. Today, we drove from Pukekohe back to New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, known as the "City of Sails." For our final two days, we planned a relaxing itinerary: climbing urban volcanic cones, strolling through a coastal town, and doing some souvenir shopping, putting a perfect end to this surprise-filled, self-guided New Zealand adventure. 🌋 Day 14: Urban Views from Volcanic Cones & Devonport's Coastal Charm Route: Pukekohe ➔ Downtown Auckland (One Tree Hill / Mt Eden) ➔ Devonport ➔ Airport Car Return In the morning, we visited two of Auckland's most iconic dormant volcano parks: · One Tree Hill (Cornwall Park): This park features vast green spaces and a striking monument standing on the summit. You can even see flocks of sheep grazing lazily on the hillside, perfectly blending nature with the urban landscape. · Mount Eden: As the highest natural point in mainland Auckland, Mount Eden boasts a massive, awe-inspiring bowl-shaped crater! Standing at the summit offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Auckland skyline, the Sky Tower, and the twin harbors. In the afternoon, we headed to Devonport, a classic little town situated on Auckland's North Shore: · North Head Historic Tunnels: Once a late 19th-century coastal defense fort, this site preserves many old underground tunnels, gun emplacements, and bunkers. Before dinner, we went to a souvenir wholesale store on the North Shore to stock up on gifts (like lanolin cream, Manuka honey, and various other New Zealand specialties), stuffing our shopping bags to the brim. Around 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM, we drove to Ace Car Rental near Auckland Airport to return our vehicle. We successfully handed back the car that had accompanied us for so many days in perfect condition, getting ready to catch our red-eye flight. ✈️ Day 15–16: The Journey Home & 15-Day North Island Road Trip Summary · Day 15 (2/7): Took a 1:20 AM flight departing from Auckland (AKL), heading to Hong Kong (HKG) for a layover. · Day 16 (2/8): Successfully arrived back at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) at 10:50 AM. I push open the floor-to-ceiling window—Auckland is still half-asleep in a thin mist, the Sky Tower’s spire piercing through the pale purple clouds, the harbor water shimmering like scattered silver in the morning light. A sailboat silently slips out of the bay, trailing ripples still drowsy with sleep. I step barefoot onto the wooden balcony floor, cool beneath my feet. The air smells like a mix of sea salt and fresh grass, like a cup of salty soda water someone just spilled 🥤 In the distance, the dormant volcanic cone—Mount Eden—rests on the city’s shoulder, quiet like an old green turtle. ——— 9:00 AM, slipping into the alleys of Queen Street ☕ Auckland’s morning is lazy; on the wooden bench outside a coffee shop, an elderly man in a wool cardigan spreads a newspaper on his lap but his eyes follow a pigeon. I sit on the grassy summit, wind rushing from all directions, blowing my hair into a mess. All of Auckland spreads beneath my feet, two harbors like the city’s open arms, one on each side embracing the sea. The sunset burns in from the west, dyeing the sky the color of marmalade, then bit by bit swallowed by the blue of night. Suddenly, a seagull lands on a rock beside me, tilting its head to look at me. Its eyes reflect the last glow of the sunset, sparkling like a small piece of dying fire. At that moment, I thought of nothing, just felt— The city can be held so gently, and so can the human heart. · —— When I leave, the streetlights have just come on, warm yellow lights hanging in strings along the hillside path. I look back once; the volcanic crater has sunk into the dark blue dusk, like a closed eyelid dreaming. That day, I didn’t do anything special. This was a lovely morning walk with a scenic ocean view. Lots of nice spots if you're looking to fish, picnic or just admire the view and go for a swim. Note that the cafe/restaurant Mrs. Jones was booked out a few days into the new year so worth making a prior booking, one of our local friends highly recommends trying them. I believe that can be a bit up in price but some delicious seafood is to be had.

Wooden crates have been set up to provide a comfortable habitat for the penguins, and as darkness falls, the wild penguins become more active. Turn on the manual red light at the entrance for easy viewing. Day 3: Travel to other towns Launceston, Cradle Mountain, Hobart, etc. 🏨 Accommodation Stayed in a dormitory. There were also Novotel options. 🍴 Dining Spots It's a small town, so there aren't many restaurants.
