This is second smallest city in the UK (please don’t ask me which the smallest city is :) The city centre is small, however, you can feel history at wherever you are and look at in the city centre area. The big cathedral is suppose to be the centre piece of Ely and many visitors come and see it. The cathedral is also used partly by an independent school called Kings Ely. This school has a very long history and is so English and traditional - compliment. If you are nearby, you can spend a day or a weekend in Ely, it’s relaxing, enjoyable and full of history. By the way: it’s only 15 mins and one stop away from Cambridge by train.

The food was fresh, tasty and delicious, the cocktails outstanding. The ambience, staff, decor was incredible. If there’s one place you need to visit when in Ely it’s this gem of a restaurant, you won’t be disappointed. We all can’t wait to return and highly recommend to others. 📌 Tips

We boarded the delightful Pullman at Haywards Heath, traveling to Cambridge and Ely. The carriage staff provided outstanding service, taking excellent care of us. The food and wine were superb, offering a luxurious experience reminiscent of the era. Highly recommended for a special occasion.

Ely Cathedral

This mobile sculpture was in Ely, Cambs when we came across it, thanks to a recommendation from someone we met on the train to Ely. Supported by Police forces across the U.K., the sculpture is constructed from over 100,000 surrendered and seized blades. I found it to be a deeply moving tribute, encouraging reflection on the impact of violent crime and possibly inspiring a motive for change ❤️🤞

Just a 15-minute train ride from Cambridge takes you to England's second-smallest "city," Ely. The moment you step out of the station, you'll spot Ely Cathedral—affectionately known as the "Ship of the Fens"—rising majestically in the distance. Climbing to the top of its Octagon Tower, the only medieval wooden lantern tower in the world, might leave you breathless, but the stunning panoramic views over the Fens are absolutely worth it! Entry is around £11–£14, which includes access to the Stained Glass Museum, while attending the Choral Evensong is completely free. After exploring, take a stroll down the historic High Street and check out Oliver Cromwell's House. Then, head down to the riverside to grab some scones and Darjeeling tea at Peacock's Tearoom before spending some quiet time feeding the swans and zoning out by the water. You can easily explore the entire town on foot without needing any buses, and if you visit on a Thursday or Saturday, you can join the bustling traditional markets. Friendly reminder: The wind in the English countryside can be fierce, so definitely bring a windbreaker! Please keep quiet inside the cathedral, and avoid wearing high heels if you plan to climb the tower, as the stairs are quite narrow. Half a day to a full day is the perfect amount of time—highly recommended as a side trip from London or Cambridge! UK Travel

Located in the town of Ely in Cambridgeshire, England, Ely Cathedral is a magnificent medieval Gothic structure, hailed as one of the most stunning churches in the UK. The history of Ely Cathedral dates back to 673 AD when St. Etheldreda founded a monastery there. The original building was destroyed by Vikings in 870, but after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, it was rebuilt and developed into the cathedral we see today. The architectural style of the cathedral combines Norman, Gothic, and other elements, especially known for its striking Octagon Tower and extensive carvings.

Ely is a lovely little town. Enjoyed a beautiful wedding there. Had a change to quickly pop into the cathedral on our way back to the station. Was surprised you had to pay to see the majority of it, most other cathedrals I've been to lately are free, and you can give donations. What we could see was fairly pretty though. will visit again.

Ely Cathedral, located in the city of Ely, England, is a magnificent and enchanting place. #europetrip Amazing architecture which worth to visit even the fee is £14, online cheaper but worth every penny. Anglican Cathedral whose present building dates back to 1089 AD. It was originally built in a monumental Roman style, some parts redesigned in the Gothic style. Plenty to see here such as the Lady Chapel and the Octagon Tower in the centre of the church. Impressive marble monuments and painted windows. You can take a tour of the massive West Tower too. Ely Cathedral is one of the most detailed art and architectural churches in England.

Travelled from Ely to London King's Cross, 06:13 took about an hour and twenty to get in. Good journey, not had any problems yet. In case you couldn't tell I'm only here for the Trip coins. I took the return train from King's Cross at 18:09 and again took roughly an hour and twenty minutes to return.
