Where to go for summer cooling in August? Don’t just focus on Sanya, Qingdao, or Weihai. The coast is beautiful, but crowded and expensive, often costing over 1,000 per night. I checked the map and found 8 truly cool inland cities that haven’t been hyped—reachable by high-speed rail, costing a few hundred per person, with temperatures feeling under 30℃ for a worry-free trip. NO.1 Guyuan | Ningxia The most underrated city in Ningxia, bar none. Guyuan’s average summer temperature is under 25℃, and you might even need a light jacket at night. Head straight to Xumi Mountain Grottoes, carved into red sandstone cliffs, much quieter than Yungang. 🚄 About 1.5 hours by high-speed rail from Yinchuan, then a 40-minute taxi ride from the station to the grottoes. ⏰ Recommended to enter the mountain after 4 PM. When sunlight hits the Buddha statues, the whole canyon glows golden. Ticket prices follow the official daily announcement; mine was 60 yuan. ⚠️ Bring a jacket. It’s windy in the mountains and can get cold at dusk. NO.2 Ningbo | Zhejiang Stop saying Ningbo is boring—you just don’t know how to enjoy it. Start the morning at Tianyi Pavilion and Moon Lake, a favorite walking spot even for locals. The stone paths by Moon Lake get warm under the sun, but the breeze through the shade is so refreshing you won’t want to leave after half an hour. 🍜 For lunch, turn into a small alley by Moon Lake and find a “mian jie mian” shop with broth so fresh it’ll surprise you. In the afternoon, drive to Xikou Tengtou Tourist Area. The Qianzhangyan Waterfall on Xuedou Mountain sprays a cool mist on your face that no air conditioner can match. If you have time, stay a night in Qiantong Ancient Town. After 8 PM, when tourists leave, the sound of the creek is better than any bar music. NO.3 Shuozhou | Shanxi Shuozhou is my secret escape town. Summer is dry and cool. Walking through the old town alleys, the wind carries the scent of loess and grass. Don’t miss Shahu Kou. Standing at the foot of the ancient Great Wall, you see the grasslands and distant mountains merge into one vast scene that no phone camera can capture. 📍 Navigate directly to “Shahu Kou Museum.” Parking is available roadside. ⚠️ Avoid light-colored shoes; the wind kicks up dust. 🍜 For lunch, have a bowl of lamb noodles in town. It costs 20 yuan and fills you up. The lamb is stewed until tender. NO.4 Shenyang | Liaoning Shenyang’s summer is actually quite comfortable, at least several degrees cooler than Beijing. Beiling Park (Qing Zhaoling) is a great place for a walk, with ancient pines towering overhead. Walking along the mausoleum path feels like entering a natural oxygen bar. ⏰ Go at 7 AM. You’ll see elders practicing Tai Chi and hear the erhu by the lake, full of local life. Shenyang Expo Garden is huge and can’t be fully explored in one day. Renting an electric cart is recommended. If you’re interested in ancient pagodas, the Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda and Beita Falun Temple are next to each other and can be visited in one trip. ⚠️ Shenyang has a lot of mosquitoes. Remember to bring insect repellent. NO.5 Nanchang | Jiangxi Nanchang’s summer can be very pleasant if you pick the right time. After 5:30 PM, climb Tengwang Pavilion. The breeze from the Gan River carries moisture that blows away the day’s heat and irritability. 📍 Enter from the east gate to avoid tourist groups. 🍜 After descending, walk to the nearby “Shengjin Pagoda Food Street” and find a clay pot soup shop. Have a bowl of cuttlefish soup with noodles. A comfortable dinner for 30 yuan. ⚠️ Tengwang Pavilion offers night tours. The lighting makes it even more photogenic. NO.6 Heihe | Heilongjiang Heihe is a true “natural air conditioner.” Summer temperatures average just above 20℃. Wudalianchi is a must-visit, with volcanic lava landscapes and dammed lakes. The air is full of negative oxygen ions. ⏰ Go to Old Heishan at 6 AM to watch the sunrise. The mist in the volcanic crater slowly disperses, creating an unreal beauty. 🍜 Locally, there’s a “mineral spring fish” dish, freshly killed and cooked in fish restaurants. The meat is especially springy. From the city to the scenic area, you can take a tourist shuttle bus, about an hour and a half, or a taxi for around 150 yuan. NO.7 Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai In Qinghai, you’ll know what real coolness means. Riyue Mountain is the first high mountain on the way to Tibet, over 3,500 meters high. The wind is strong and chilling. ⚠️ Wear a windbreaker and tighten your hat so the wind doesn’t blow it away. Guide National Geopark is even more worth visiting. The colorful Danxia landform against the blue sky and white clouds has such saturated colors it looks edited. 📍 About 2 hours’ drive from Xining. The road is in good condition. 🍜 Buy a cup of yak yogurt roadside. It’s sour enough to make you frown but rich in dairy flavor. Five yuan a cup. NO.8 Pingdingshan | Henan The highlight of Pingdingshan is Yao Mountain—the Central Plains Giant Buddha. Yao Mountain is over 2,000 meters high. Summer temperatures in the mountains are just over 20 degrees, and the creek water is crystal clear. ⏰ On the morning hike, rest at the “Tongtian Ladder” section and dip your feet in the mountain spring water. It’s ice-cold and instantly refreshing. The Buddha is 208 meters tall. Standing at its base looking up, you realize how small humans really are. 🚄 Take the high-speed rail to Lushan Station, then a 30-minute taxi to the scenic area. ⚠️ Wear sneakers.
