Highly recommend this place. It's not huge, but it has everything you need. It's near Mt. Omuro, so you can easily stop by while you're in the area. There are many animal species, and the interactivity is very high. There are self-service vending boxes for feeding supplies almost everywhere. It's 200 yen for a bundle of grass, which felt a bit expensive to me. The animals can also roam around freely; I'm really curious how they don't run out of the zoo. Especially the little monkeys, they're jumping around everywhere. I highly recommend this place if you're traveling in Japan. It's worth noting that the last bus from here depends on the park's closing time. You must get to the bus stop and queue before the park closes. When visiting Japan, be sure to plan to spend a day at a traditional Japanese inn, a ryokan ♨️ We stayed at the Yokikan ryokan, located in Ito on the Izu Peninsula. It's 115 years old and is highly recommended by many because it's very accepting of small tattoos. The inn itself is located at the foot of the hill and has two baths, but more on that later 🌊 We were checked into a traditional Japanese-style room with tatami mats and rice paper walls, and the windows had shoji-style bamboo paper lattices. 🪟 Afterward, we changed into yukatas and secured our kimonos with obi sashes. 👘🥋 We then went to a kaiseki dinner—a Japanese multi-course meal. 🍱 After dinner, we went to relax in an onsen bath with hot springs that rise from a depth of 400 meters. Our ryokan has two baths: an indoor one and an open-air one at the top of the hill, reached by a cable car. 🚡Up there, you can watch the sunrise or sunset with a beautiful view of Ito. 🌅 The onsen has a set of rules, and one of them is taking a bath. Naked When it got dark, they laid out futon mattresses for us, and we fell into a deep sleep. And at 6 a.m., we woke up to watch the sunrise in the onsen overlooking Ito. 🥰 After our morning hot baths, breakfast was already waiting for us in our room, as was dinner, with a variety of unusual dishes. 🍱 So that's how our day at the traditional Yokikan inn ended, and another encounter with Fuji lay ahead. 🗻 Ito itself is also an interesting town. It's famous for Mount Omuro, where you can ride the cable car and enjoy the view and the lush grass. 🌿Nearby is a zoo where, in addition to monkeys, birds, and other animals, you can play with and feed capybaras, and then walk in a cage with flamingos. 🦩 Besides, you can swim in the ocean or stroll along the Jogasaki coast. Escaping the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, we briefly "exiled" ourselves to the Izu Peninsula. This time, there were no complicated transfer schedules, nor the hassle of dragging luggage through unfamiliar stations. We chose a more leisurely way—chartering a car—to embark on a romantic journey of mountains, sea, and lava. Setting off from Shinjuku early in the morning, the city skyline outside the window gradually gave way to lush mountains. When the huge "matcha pudding"—Mount Omuro—appeared before us, it felt like stepping into Makoto Shinkai’s "Your Name." Taking the cable car slowly to the summit, standing on the edge of the dormant volcano, we enjoyed a 360° panoramic view of the silent Mount Fuji and the vast Izu Seven Islands, with the breeze carrying the scent of freedom. The train sped along the coastline, with the azure sea just within reach outside the window, as if the next second it would enter the world of a Studio Ghibli animation. As dusk fell, carrying the sea breeze and sunset back to Tokyo, we realized that the meaning of travel might not be about how many sights you check off, but about the luxury of completely wasting time on beautiful things. Izu Shaboten Zoo is located right next to Mount Omuro in Ito City, Shizuoka. It isn't just famous for its vast collection of cacti—it's also an amazing park where you can get up close and personal with a variety of adorable animals! Even if the weather isn't great (it was windy and raining on the day of my visit), you'll still find delightful surprises. The biggest highlight is definitely the therapeutic sight of the famous capybaras soaking in their hot springs. With red pandas, little foxes, African penguins, flamingos, and many more animals around, I had an absolute blast that day. Recommended Route & Highlights: · I highly suggest heading straight to the capybara hot spring area right after entering. Especially in winter, watching the capybaras lazily soak in the bath is incredibly soothing. · Afterward, take a clockwise stroll around the park. Along the way, you might spot red pandas, little foxes, mandarin ducks, and other ducks. Some animals will even walk right up to you, making it perfect for those who love taking photos and feeding them. · The giant cactus greenhouse is the park's main theme. Mt. Omuro is a mountain situated right next to Ito City. It was once a volcano but is now completely extinct. The views here are absolutely stunning! There's a walking path that circles the crater, giving you a breathtaking 360-degree bird's-eye view of Ito City. From up here, you can even spot Hakone and Mount Fuji too! Right in the center of the mountain, there is now an archery range where you can go down and shoot some arrows. For our trip, we drove from Tokyo. We left a little early, and the drive took about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once we arrived, we just hopped on the chairlift straight to the top. Once you reach the summit and stroll along the crater's circular walking trail, you'll see a bowl-shaped depression tens of meters deep right below you.
