Tottori is a wonderfully low-key and highly underrated hidden gem. Spending a 5-day, 4-night car-free vacation here is actually quite affordable and surprisingly convenient. ▌ How to Get to Tottori? Tigerair Taiwan offers direct flights to Yonago Airport. From there, you can take a bus or the JR line to Yonago Station, then transfer to the JR San'in Main Line to reach Tottori Station. If you travel by JR, the fare is around 3,500 JPY, and the journey takes at least 2 hours. If you're visiting in the summer, I highly recommend the "Tottori Sakyu (Sand Dunes) Bus"! From July 3 to October 23, 2026, the limited-time "Tottori Sakyu Bus," a 9-seater shared taxi, will be in service. I strongly recommend booking a spot on this ride. The ride costs 4,000 JPY per person and takes about 90 minutes. Solo travelers are totally welcome to book! It costs about the same as the JR train but is far more comfortable, much faster, offers a direct ride from the airport, and even stops at famous Detective Conan attractions along the way. There's honestly no reason not to take it! ▌ From Namba, Osaka to Tottori: A Perfect Combo Trip Tottori pairs perfectly with Osaka for a longer 6 to 7-day trip. You can fly into Osaka and fly out from Tottori (Yonago). Start by exploring Osaka for a few days, then hop on the incredibly cheap 1,000 JPY highway bus from Namba OCAT. To snag this one-way deal, you must board at Namba OCAT. You can reserve your spot online in advance, then pick up your ticket and pay at the station counter. · Namba OCAT Highway Bus: 3 hours, 1,000 JPY · JR Super Hakuto Express: 2.5 hours, 7,500 JPY Given the massive price difference for just an extra 30 minutes of travel, the bus is an absolute steal. The highway bus is super comfy, featuring spacious seats with plenty of legroom and privacy curtains between passengers. There’s also a quick pit stop at a rest area along the way for a restroom break. ※ Note: This special fare is exclusively for the Namba OCAT ⇒ Tottori Station route. It does not apply if you board at Umeda or Kobe. ▌ Where to Stay in Tottori? I highly recommend staying near Tottori Station. It offers the best variety of options at very affordable prices. For example, the Tottori Green Hotel Morris costs only about 2,000 TWD per night and boasts top-notch service and quality. If you’re looking for a more unique experience, consider staying near the Tottori Sand Dunes. For instance, "Sayu" offers a fantastic glamping experience. You can grab some deli food at AEON for dinner, or even rent BBQ equipment for a cookout. On clear nights, it's the perfect spot for stargazing. Google Maps works flawlessly here, so simply fire up the app for easy navigation. · Local Buses (Numbered Routes) This is your primary mode of transport from Tottori Station to major sights like the Tottori Sand Dunes, The Sand Museum, and the Uradome Coast (Routes 33, 32). Board from the rear door and grab a paper ticket. When exiting from the front door, match your ticket number to the fare display board to pay. You can now use ICOCA (and other nationwide IC transit cards). Just tap your card or smartphone on the reader when boarding and alighting. · "Kururi" 100-Yen Loop Bus A handy loop bus for getting around downtown Tottori, stopping at city highlights like the Tottori Prefectural Museum, the Warabekan Toy Museum, and the Tottori Castle Ruins. While the dunes are open 24/7, I highly recommend visiting at dusk. The weather is cooler, and the golden hour sunlight casts a mesmerizing, warm glow over the rippling sand. The sand here isn't sticky—it dusts right off with a gentle pat, making barefoot walks incredibly comfortable. The dunes also offer plenty of activities like sandboarding and camel rides. There are not just sand dunes when you come to Tottori, there is already a lot of maritime entertainment on the Fuura coast alone. This time I spent HK$460 and I was able to canoe and snorkel there. The sea here is so clean that once you hit the water, it's all jellyfish and fish, and starfish are at your fingertips. About 10km northeast from the Tottori Sand Dunes along the bay coastline, Uradome Coast in Iwami Town, located at the northeastern tip of Tottori Prefecture, is a ria coast stretching about 15km from east to west, and with its complex topography, small islands of all sizes, and marine blue sea, it is one of Tottori's most scenic spots, · ike a painting reminiscent of Matsushima. I was honestly surprised at how beautiful the sea on the Japan Sea side of Tottori was! The clear tropical marine blue is comparable to the ocean of the tropics. By the way, this Uradome Coast is listed in a number of prestigious scenic spots, including: · San'in Kaigan National Park · 100 Views of Japan · 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Coasts in Japan · 100 Best Beaches in Japan · 100 Best Tourist Sites in Japan during the Heisei Era · San'in Kaigan Geopark It is supposedly a hiking trail from Ajiro Port on the western end to Kamogaiso on the east, but when I visited in July 2021, there were spider webs everywhere and it was full of weeds, making it difficult to walk... It is unclear whether it was the off-season or if it just so happened to be before cleaning, but the views glimpsed from key points were full of spectacular views. For just 4,000 yen (about CNY 200), you can ride JR limited express and local trains unlimited times in the Sanin region for 3 days. CNY 200 might not even cover 3 subway rides in Osaka. But with this pass, you can explore from the Tottori Sand Dunes all the way to Matsue Castle, from Japan’s top garden to the monster town. Here’s a complete guide on how to use this pass, where you can go, and how to buy and use it. What this pass can do In short: for 3 consecutive days, unlimited rides on JR limited express, rapid, and local trains with unreserved seats within the Tottori-Matsue area. Key stations covered include popular Sanin cities like Tottori, Yonago, Matsue, Izumo, and Sakaiminato. Besides JR lines, you can also ride the Tottori Kirin Shishi loop bus and the Matsue Lake Line loop bus for free, saving on local transportation. I'm not exactly an anime fan, so I'm not too familiar with the storylines of Detective Conan or Yokai Village. However, as someone who absolutely loves collecting stamps and hunting down real-life anime locations—this is the perfect place to be! Day 1 Around Shirawara Coast, Tottori Sand Dunes Day 2 Izumo Taisha Shrine, Inasa Beach, catching the sunset at Lake Shinji in Matsue City Day 3 Around Yonago Airport: Yokai Village Before the trip, the spot I was looking forward to the most was the area around the Shirawara Coast. There are several scenic routes here where you can enjoy the ocean views. Some sections see very few people, making the trails a bit rugged. The path we took was partly a paved road used by locals to drive up and hike down, and partly a somewhat challenging trek because we wanted to get closer to the shoreline. I highly recommend assessing your own fitness level before taking it on. Most international tourists spend an entire day just visiting the Tottori Sand Dunes, but honestly, I highly recommend checking out the nearby Uradome Beach and the Shirawara Coast along the way. Guide to reaching Shirawara Coast: Take Bus No. 32 (Iwami-Iwai Line) to Ajiro, then enjoy a leisurely hike along the road all the way to the Shirawara Coast. "Where’s the best photo spot at Shirawara Coast?" Everywhere along the way! Just gauge your stamina based on the map and choose which parts of the coast you want to visit (feel free to use the landmarks as a reference for where we went this time) There was no one else on the trail, so it was incredibly peaceful, allowing us to fully take in the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the rocks. Figuring out the names of the islands along the Shirawara Coast with my travel buddies was loads of fun! Afterward, we walked to the bus stop on the outskirts of Iwami City (Uradome Kaigan-guchi) and hopped back on Bus No. 32 heading to the Tottori Sand Dunes. I won't bore you with the details of the rest of the trip since there are plenty of guides online. But if you have a Tottori Pass, you absolutely must visit The Sand Museum. The sand sculptures inside will blow your mind—they are truly spectacular!

The sunset over the ocean seen from Tottori Sand Dunes was magnificently beautiful, as if the sky, sand, and sea were one. With only the sound of the waves echoing against the sky that changed color from moment to moment, it felt like time was passing slowly. The crimson horizon and the silhouette of the vast sand dunes cannot be fully conveyed in a photograph; I was so moved that I simply stood there, captivated by the sight. It was a special moment where I could simultaneously feel the tranquility and power of nature.
