Kars travel guide and discussion

#January Good Places 2025 The most famous specialty of Kars in Turkey is cheese, there is a cheese museum in the city center, hidden in an early military fortress, the overall feel is very modern, which has an introduction and production model display of several of Kars' famous cheeses. The Kars people would start making cheese due to the influence of foreign nations, was occupied and colonized by the Russian Empire during the Ottoman Empire (between 1844-1918), was listed as one of the states, and even Nicholas II left many buildings in Kars. During this period many non-Turks and non-Muslims came here to live and live, the locals would begin to learn to make cheese during this period. After getting to know the shops on Cheese one street, enjoy tasting, purchasing, rich choices, good quality, the point is the price is super affordable! So not only the Netherlands and France have beautiful cheese in Europe, but if you really want to buy it, you must not miss the gravyer, malakan and kaşar.

While everyone else flocks to Turkey's coastal resorts and ancient cities, I chose to bid farewell to the Eurasian charm of Istanbul and fly north to this Black Sea sanctuary favored by time. Many know of Turkey's romance, but few realize that its north hides a lush, tranquil, and pristine paradise. Free from the noisy crowds, it offers only mountains, forests, seas of clouds, streams, and ancient civilizations, all quietly whispering the unique poetry and gentleness of the Black Sea.

If you’re travelling around Türkiye, don’t overlook the overnight trains! They’re one of my favourite ways to cover long distances while saving a night of accommodation — and waking up somewhere completely new is such a fun experience. 🥹 🌙 Which routes can you take? Some of the main long-distance routes include: 🚂 Doğu Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kars 🏔️ Turistik Doğu Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kars, with longer sightseeing stops 🚂 Güney Kurtalan Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Kurtalan 🌊 Vangölü Ekspresi — Ankara ↔ Tatvan 🚂 İzmir Mavi — Ankara ↔ İzmir 🚂 Konya Mavi — Konya ↔ İzmir There are also other long-distance mainline services, so it’s worth checking the current timetable before planning your route. 💡 Tip: If you want a sleeper/bed, don’t leave it until the last minute — these can be much more limited than ordinary seats. ⏰ ARRIVE EARLY! This is probably my BIGGEST tip. Even though it can sometimes be possible to board very close to departure, I would NOT recommend arriving only 5 minutes before your train leaves. 😅 Stations can be confusing, platforms can change, and you need time to find your carriage and berth. 👉 Aim for 30 minutes before departure, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the station. 🛏️ What should you expect? For overnight journeys, you may have options ranging from regular seats to compartments with beds, depending on the service. Bring: 🎧 Earphones/earplugs 😴 Eye mask 💧 Water 🥪 Snacks 🔋 Power bank 🧥 A light layer 🧳 A small bag with everything you need overnight And most importantly… DON’T JUST SLEEP THROUGH IT! 😂 The scenery outside the window can be incredible, especially as the landscape changes dramatically across Türkiye. 🌄 ⭐ My favourite part? There’s something so special about going to sleep in one city and waking up hundreds of kilometres away. It’s slower than flying, but that’s exactly the point. 🚆❤️ Save this for your Türkiye trip! 🇹🇷 #TurkeyTravel #Türkiye #TurkeyTrains #TrainTravel #OvernightTrain #TravelTips #BackpackingTurkey #TCDD #DoğuEkspresi #Kars #Ankara #TravelTürkiy

I decided to fly from Kars to Istanbul, and honestly, I don’t regret it at all. The flight saved me so much time compared to traveling by land, making the journey much more comfortable and convenient. One of my favorite parts was Kars Harakani Airport. The airport was surprisingly beautiful, and during winter, the snowy mountains surrounding it made the view even more breathtaking. Waiting for my flight while looking outside at the snow-covered landscape felt so peaceful. The flight itself was smooth and on time, and before I knew it, I had already arrived in Istanbul. If you’re traveling from Kars, I definitely recommend taking a flight. It’s fast, comfortable, and the winter scenery at the airport is something you shouldn’t miss. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommended! #flight #turki

After enjoying cheese tastings at a local shop, our cave adventure in Kars City continued to a truly magical place: the Kars Peynir Müzesi (Kars Cheese Museum). As soon as I stepped inside, my expectations were completely shattered. This place is incredibly cool and not at all boring! The museum boasts unique architecture, resembling a giant underground tunnel with majestic natural stone walls. The atmosphere is dim and aesthetic, making us feel like we're entering a giant bunker that holds the world's best cheeses. At the main entrance, we were immediately challenged to complete exciting missions, from milking in the stable area to lifting a whole wheel of the super-heavy Kars Gravyer. The Secret Taste of Kars Cheese & Ancient Diorama I took a tour with a local guide who explained the history behind Kars cheese. There's one unique fact that amazed me: the cows on the Kars plateau apparently eat a local plant called Göle Sorjanı (Allium czelghauricum), a type of endemic onion plant that grows at altitudes of 2,000–3,000 meters. This natural reason is what gives their milk its distinctive floral aroma and produces a cheese flavor unmatched anywhere in the world! The museum also features life-sized dioramas depicting the ancient cheese-making process in incredible detail: Ancient Factory: Statues of traditional cheesemakers busily churning milk in giant copper vats. Maturation Room: Rows of giant cheese wheels neatly arranged on old wooden shelves with an ancient iron furnace in the center. Farmers' Village: A replica of a traditional barn (Ahır) complete with livestock mannequins and ancient tools like hayforks and milk containers. I also learned about Tuluh Cheese and Motal Cheese, unique local cheese varieties that are fermented in airtight sheepskin containers for months until they ripen perfectly. Personally, this museum has opened my eyes to the fact that cheese isn't just food, but a blend of cultural heritage, history, and natural science, fused into a work of culinary art. If you're exploring Eastern Turkey, this place should definitely be on your bucket list! Interested in experiencing the cheese tunnel vibe? If you're exploring Eastern Turkey, specifically the city of Kars, located at the far end of the country and very close to the Georgian border, there's one thing you can't miss: hunting for local cheese. Kars is renowned as the cheese capital of Turkey, with a legendary cheese-making tradition that's been preserved for centuries. I stopped by a local shop recommended by locals called Ebru Gıda & Yöresel Ürünler. Here, I had a truly exciting experience rarely found elsewhere: a cheese tasting, where I sampled various types of authentic Kars cheese on aesthetic wooden plates. Unique Cheeses You Must Try This shop serves traditional cheese plates with the names written directly on the wood. Here are some of the cheeses I most impressed with: Kars Gravyer (Gruyere): This is the king of cheese in Kars. With its small holes and somewhat firm texture, it has a super savory and intense flavor due to its long fermentation process. Eski Kaşar: A typical aged Turkish cheese with a ripe yellow color. Its flavor is sharp, strong, and perfect for lovers of bold cheese flavors. Taze Kaşar: A younger version of Kaşar. Its texture is much softer and its flavor is milkier and lighter on the tongue. Göğermiş Çeçil / Peynir: This is a truly unique, local blue cheese with a slightly greenish color due to natural mold. It has a sharp aroma and a very distinctive savory flavor. Yağlı Çeçil & Kuru Çeçil: A local signature knitted or string cheese. Its chewy texture is fun to pull apart. Yaprak Tulum: A traditional Tulum cheese with a slightly crumbly texture but just the right amount of salty and savory flavor. The Twelve Apostles Church, also known as the Kümbet Mosque, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Kars, Türkiye. This historic structure, with its rich architectural and cultural heritage, stands as a testament to the city’s diverse past and its enduring significance. Historical Background The Twelve Apostles Church was originally built between 932 and 937 AD during the reign of the Armenian Bagratid King Abas I. It was constructed as an Armenian Apostolic church and served as a central place of worship for the local Christian community. The church’s name is derived from the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, whose figures are depicted in relief on the drum of the dome. In 1064, following the Seljuk conquest of Kars, the church was converted into a mosque. This transformation marked the beginning of a new chapter in the building’s history, reflecting the changing religious and cultural dynamics of the region. The structure was later used as a Russian Orthodox church during the Russian occupation in the 19th century, and briefly as an Armenian church again in the early 20th century. Architectural Features The Twelve Apostles Church is renowned for its unique architectural design, which combines elements of Armenian, Byzantine, and Islamic styles. The building is centrally planned with a domed tetraconch layout, featuring four apses radiating from a central square bay. This design is reminiscent of the seventh-century Church of Saint John in Mastara, Armenia. The exterior of the church is adorned with intricate carvings and reliefs, including the twelve apostles depicted in a primitive style on the drum of the dome. These figures are a significant feature, symbolizing the church’s original dedication to the apostles. The main entrance is located on the western side, with additional gates on the south and north sides, reflecting the architectural norms of the period. Inside, the church’s interior plan is mirrored in its exterior volumes, creating a harmonious and balanced structure. The central dome, supported by squinches, rises above the main prayer hall, providing a sense of grandeur and spiritual elevation. Cultural Significance Throughout its history, the Twelve Apostles Church has served various religious communities, reflecting the multicultural heritage of Kars. Its conversion from a church to a mosque and back again highlights the region’s complex history of conquest, occupation, and cultural exchange. In the 1960s, the building was repurposed as the Kars Museum, showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to the city’s rich history. However, in 1993, it was once again converted into a mosque, known today as the Kümbet Mosque2. This continuous adaptation and reuse of the structure underscore its enduring importance to the people of Kars. Visiting the Twelve Apostles Church Today, the Twelve Apostles Church remains a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. Its striking architecture, historical significance, and serene atmosph

Despite the impressive history, today Kars is a small agricultural based town of about 80,000 people, making it the largest Turkish city on the border with Armenia. Kars is full things to see and to try, come here for 2-3 days and you will not regret it.😋 One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the imposing Kars Castle, which has stood for centuries and is a testament to the city’s rich history. Take a stroll through the historic streets of Kars and marvel at the beautiful Ottoman-era buildings that line the streets. Walk along the streets and you’ll notice there are reminders of the Russian occupation in town including the Fethiye Mosque. Yes, it’s got two pencil-thin minarets, but other than that, it looks very much like the Russian Orthodox church it once was. ⛪️ Try local cheese, and honey they are the specialty of this place, buy some of these good as a present for your family and go to have a goose for dinner at Pushkin restaurant by watching Caucasian dancers performance, it’s the must thing to do in Kars☝🏼 You can come to Kars by plane or by bus, but the most famous way to come here is by train from Ankara (It will take you 32 hours).🚂 #trip #Kars #turkey
