It's no secret that modern-day Turkey is home to an unbelievable number of ancient ruins! That’s because this region was the very heart of the ancient world and a crossroads of great civilizations. You’ll stumble upon ancient cities literally at every turn, and even if you wanted to, it would be impossible to see and explore all of this heritage. The most famous archaeological sites have long since become open-air museums complete with ticket booths and crowds of tourists, but there are also more "wild," off-the-beaten-path spots. 📍 One of them is the ancient Lycian city of Kyaneai (Kyaneai Büyük Sarnıç) To get here, you have to turn off the main road and drive for a few kilometers along a pretty rugged, rocky dirt road. If you have a low-clearance car, take your time and be super careful, or just hike up instead (judging by Google reviews, hiking trails from the bottom are quite popular). We only recommend driving right up to the amphitheater if you are fully confident in your driving skills and your vehicle. 💫 But once you reach the top, you'll find something you rarely experience in popular tourist spots: absolute silence and a feeling like you've actually traveled back in time. You'll see a majestic, grass-grown Hellenistic amphitheater, dozens of monumental tombs of the Lycian nobility, ancient ruins, and breathtaking views of the mountains and the sea! During our visit, there was a light rain shower at first, but then the sun came out. The wet stones, gorgeous clouds, green slopes, and golden pre-sunset light made this place feel even more atmospheric and cinematic, and we even managed to capture some drone footage. It might seem like just a quick stopover, but it's an incredibly memorable one!

I spent a long time choosing a hotel in the center of Kaş to truly soak up the town’s vibe and step right into the thick of it all. But boy, was I wrong! The vibe here is completely different! It’s a cozy port town in southern Turkey, rightfully called the "Turkish Santorini." People don’t fly here for wild parties — it’s all about narrow streets, whitewashed houses with red tile roofs, stunning bougainvilleas, and a "living" history atmosphere. Kaş stands on the site of ancient Antiphellos (once part of the Lycian League!), and even its name translates to "eyebrow" — because of its location right on the hillside. This town is literally eye-catching! What to see and do in Kaş? 🏛️ ✨ Take a stroll through the center! Right in town, you can check out a 2nd-century BC amphitheater and top-tier Lycian tombs for free (look out for the Lion Tomb from the 4th century BC — it pops up right in the middle of a street!). The city's main pedestrian thoroughfare, lined with authentic Ottoman-style houses and bursting with vibrant bougainvillea. · The Lycian Lion Tomb. A famous two-story sarcophagus from the 4th century BC, located at the end of Uzun Çarşı Street. It is just one of many ancient tombs scattered across the town. Relaxing on the Çukurbağ Peninsula Isthmus · İnceboğaz Beach. Situated at the narrowest point of the isthmus, just 1.5–2 km from the town center. The spot is incredibly unique because it features two separate beach areas literally 10 meters apart, right across the road from each other: · The Bay Side (Inner): More sheltered from the wind, with warmer and calmer waters, making it perfect for families. Even if you don't surf yourself, it's a truly spectacular sight. 🏖️ Take a dip at the town beach. With its gentle slope into the sea and pristine water, it's the perfect spot for families with children. 📸 And don't forget to simply stroll through the town's streets. 🌳 Kaş is a picturesque and atmospheric port town on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, located 180-200 km from Antalya. 🌳 Kaş lacks large all-inclusive hotels; small boutique hotels with breakfast and sometimes dinner are the norm. Unlike traditional Turkish resorts, Kaş has retained an intimate, bohemian Mediterranean feel with low-rise white houses draped in vibrant flowers. 🌳 Kaş has a "Little Greece" feel, as it's located near the Greek island of Meis, a feeling evident in its architecture, narrow streets, and traditional cuisine. 🌳 Kaş is surrounded by mountains and pine forests. The beaches here are predominantly pebbly and rocky, and the water is incredibly clear. The famous sandy beach of Kaputaş is nearby. 🌳 We were staying in Kemer and rented a car for a day to visit this beautiful city. Standing high above the coastline, I was treated to a breathtaking panorama where the mountains, traditional village houses, lush greenery, and the deep blue Mediterranean all came together in one view. It felt completely different from the busy atmosphere down by the sea. What surprised me most was how peaceful everything was. Instead of crowds, I heard birds, felt the cool mountain breeze, and simply enjoyed the scenery for much longer than I had planned. Sometimes the most unforgettable coastal views aren't found at sea level—they're discovered from the hills above. 🌊 If you want to see a different side of Turkey, you absolutely have to visit Patara Beach. Patara is one of the longest beaches in the Mediterranean. With nearly 18 km (11 miles) of golden sand, a wide shoreline, and rolling sand dunes, it feels like you're miles away from civilization. ✨ What makes this beach special: · There are no massive resorts, endless rows of sun loungers, or loud beach clubs. Thanks to its sheer size, you can easily find a secluded spot all to yourself, even during peak season. Unlike Kaputas Beach, which is almost impossible to find empty, this is a massive advantage! ☀️ Best time to visit The best time to go is before 10:00 AM or after 4:30 PM. In the mornings, the sea is usually calmer, there are fewer crowds, and it isn’t too hot. By late afternoon, the sun feels much softer. By the way, the sunset here is hands down one of the most gorgeous on the entire coast. 🚗 How to get there from Kaş: By car: · About 40–45 minutes · The most convenient option, especially if you're exploring on your own. By dolmuş (minibus): · First, head to the village of Gelemiş (Patara) — it takes about 1 hour · From there, it's a 20–30 minute walk to the beach or a quick taxi ride. 🎒 What to pack ✔️ Water ✔️ A hat ✔️ Sunscreen ✔️ An umbrella, especially if you plan on staying for a few hours ✔️ Beach shoes ✔️ Cash for the entrance fee and small expenses like food or drinks. 🩵 If you’re staying in Kaş for a few days, definitely set aside a full day just for Patara. 🌊 Kaputaş Beach is a famous natural beach on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, nestled in a narrow gorge between sheer cliffs along the D400 highway, 20 km from Kaş and 5 km from Kalkan. 🌊 The beach is renowned for its vivid turquoise waters, sandy-pebble shoreline, and the spectacular view from the roadside observation deck. 🌊 We drove 170 km from Kemer just to see this gorgeous spot, and we didn't regret it for a second. The beach is absolutely breathtaking! 🌊 The cove is tucked between two steep cliffs that shield it from the wind. A long staircase of 180 steps leads down to the water—going down is a breeze, but climbing back up in the heat is quite a workout. 🌊 As a municipal beach, renting sun loungers and umbrellas comes at an extra cost.
