Tested kid-friendly city trips that aren’t tiring, worry-free all the way
8 cities where traveling with kids is easy and stress-free, personally tested
1️⃣ Zhanjiang | Guangdong
When bringing kids to Zhanjiang, don’t rush straight to the seafood stalls. Kids get hungry quickly, so start with Huguangyan.
📍 Huguangyan is windy. Enter through the east gate after 3 PM. There’s plenty of shade and it’s stroller-friendly. A half loop around Ma’er Lake is enough—don’t overdo it, kids have limited stamina. It’s windy by the lake, so bring a light jacket. In the evening, visit Xiashan Seaside Promenade, a local spot for walking kids. The sand is fine and kids can collect small shells.
🍜 For dinner, head to Gongnong Road for a bowl of mildly spicy wet beef noodles that kids can handle.
⚠️ Don’t buy coconuts at the scenic area entrance—they’re twice as expensive. The next morning, visit Jinshawan Beach. At low tide, the water is shallow and perfect for water guns. Rest at the hotel at noon if it gets hot—don’t push it. Zhanjiang’s pace is slow: one spot per day, kids stay calm, and adults don’t get tired.
2️⃣ Jingmen | Hubei
The easiest way to enjoy Jingmen is to go straight to Mingxian Mausoleum. Arrive before 9 AM to avoid crowds. The stone paths are smooth and stroller-friendly.
📍 The cultural highlights are concentrated around the spirit way and the Ming tower. A full walk takes about 1.5 hours. Don’t rush with kids—find some shade, sit down, watch the pigeons fly, and kids will be entertained for a long time.
⚠️ There aren’t many dining options inside the park, so bring water and bread. For lunch, go to a farmhouse restaurant by Mochou Lake for fish cakes and steamed dishes—light and kid-friendly. If kids still have energy in the afternoon, visit the children’s interactive area at the museum, which offers pottery experiences and can keep them busy for 2 hours. Jingmen is affordable overall, taxis are cheap, perfect for spontaneous trips. One tip: don’t cram too many spots in one day—limit to two.
3️⃣ Taizhou | Zhejiang
I recommend splitting Taizhou into two days; otherwise, kids will be exhausted and cling to you. On day one, visit Tiantai Mountain. Enter at 8 AM when the air is cool, and start with the creek trail outside Guoqing Temple.
📍 Tiantai Mountain has many stone steps. Smaller kids will need to be carried for some parts, but there’s plenty of shade so it’s not too hot. Have dumplings and bingtong (a local snack) for lunch at the foot of the mountain—kids can hold and eat them themselves. In the afternoon, visit Taizhou Prefecture Cultural Tourism Area. The city wall is wide, and you can rent an electric cart to save kids’ legs. On day two, go to Shenxianju and take the cable car up—don’t try to hike up with kids who can’t manage it. The suspension bridges and plank roads on the mountain are flat, and kids will be excited to see the sea of clouds.
🍜 After descending, have a bowl of wheat shrimp noodles in Baita Town. The broth is fresh, and kids can eat a small bowl.
⚠️ The cable car stops running at 4 PM, so plan accordingly. Taizhou’s scenery is truly beautiful, but don’t overdo it—one mountain per day is just right.
4️⃣ Lingshui | Hainan
Lingshui is quieter than Sanya and better for slow-paced trips with kids. On Fenjiezhou Island, take the earliest boat at 9 AM. The water is as clear as glass.
📍 You can ride an electric cart around the island. Kids can enjoy the breeze while riding and get off to watch the dolphin pool. Don’t force kids to snorkel; feeding the stingrays near the shore is safer. When the fish swarm, kids will laugh and scream with delight. Have lunch at the island restaurant—prices are high but convenient. In the afternoon, return to the mainland and visit Nanwan Monkey Island. Don’t take the cable car; take the boat instead—it’s just a few minutes. The monkeys on the island are clever. ⚠️ Don’t show any food in your hands or it will be snatched. Kids will laugh for a long time watching monkeys fight. In the evening, buy seafood at Xincun Pier and have it cooked at nearby shops—it’s much cheaper than in the scenic area. Lingshui’s pace is one spot in the morning, one in the afternoon, and early bedtime.
5️⃣ Linyi | Shandong
Linyi’s kid-friendly highlight is an underground adventure. Visit the Firefly Water Cave in the morning, which stays cool year-round and is especially refreshing in summer.
📍 Take a small boat through the dark river, with fireflies glowing above. Kids will quiet down watching the lights—that kind of calm is precious. Don’t rush out afterward; the underground canyon is nearby and fun to explore. The rafting in the canyon is gentle and shallow, suitable for kids aged 5 or 6.
⚠️ The cave is slippery, so put non-slip shoes on kids—no sandals. For lunch, try the scallion pancake rolls at the scenic area entrance; kids can have fun rolling them themselves. In the afternoon, visit Yimeng Mountain. Don’t climb too high—take the cable car halfway up and walk a short plank road.
🍜 For dinner, have a bowl of grain soup with fried dough sticks in the city. Kids will love it. Linyi’s attraction tickets are affordable, great for families on a budget.
6️⃣ Daxing’anling | Heilongjiang
Daxing’anling is my personal favorite recommendation. The summer coolness is a lifesaver. In Beijicun, there’s no need to rush attractions. It gets light around 4 AM, so if kids wake up early, just go out for a stroll.
📍 Walk along the Heilongjiang River, with Russia across the way. The air smells of pine. During the day, visit the reindeer park. Kids can feed moss to the gentle reindeer, which won’t snatch food. For lunch, have iron pot stew in the village—slow-cooked chicken and mushrooms. Kids can soak rice in the broth and eat a bowl. While kids nap in the afternoon, adults can relax in the yard and watch the clouds—a kind of slow pace you can’t find in the city.
⚠️ Mosquitoes are abundant at night, so bring long pants and sleeves and carry mosquito repellent. If kids have energy, watch the sunset near the Arctic outpost in the evening—the light on the river is beautiful. Daxing’anling is best for a 2–3 day stay. Don’t rush; kids will naturally relax here.
7️⃣ Tianjin
Tianjin is perfect for kids, with many attractions close together and mostly flat roads. In the morning, visit the Five Great Avenues Cultural Tourism Area. Don’t take a horse carriage—it’s expensive and hot. Better to rent a shared bike and ride slowly with the stroller.
📍 The old Western-style houses on Machangdao each have a story. For lunch, go to the Italian Style Area and find an outdoor restaurant for pizza. Kids can eat while watching electric carts pass by. When it gets hot in the afternoon, head to the indoor sports center near the Olympic Sports Center, which has a children’s activity area for running and jumping. In the evening, visit Fantawild Adventure. ⚠️ Remember, don’t go on weekends—lines can be unbearably long. On weekdays, many rides have no wait, and kids can play until closing.
🍜 For dinner, buy cooked pear cake and sugar paintings at Nanshi Food Street to snack on while walking. Tianjin’s transportation is convenient, with subways reaching most attractions, so traveling with kids is easy. After a full day, kids will be drained, and you’ll still have energy to post on social media.
8️⃣ Lijiang | Yunnan
Don’t just think of romantic encounters in Lijiang—traveling with kids is also fun. In the morning, visit Black Dragon Pool Park. It’s quiet, the water is clear, and you can see the reflection of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
📍 The park has many bridges and pavilions close together, so you can rest every few steps. Kids chase fish while adults relax with tea. For lunch, return to Lijiang Old Town but avoid the crowded main street. Turn into the alleys of Wuyi Street, where there’s a shop making chicken bean jelly that kids love. In the afternoon, visit the Mu Residence. It’s spacious with low steps and stroller-friendly.
⚠️ The Mu Residence closes at 5:30 PM, so go early. Kids are most interested in the gardens and will be happy running around. The next day, visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Be sure to book the cable car tickets in advance to avoid wasted trips. Don’t go to the highest point with kids; the Yunshanping area is enough. The altitude is lower, so kids won’t feel unwell.
🍜 After descending, have Naxi-style barbecue in Baisha Ancient Town, which is cheaper than in the Old Town. Lijiang’s pace is slow and easy—kids are comfortable, and so are you.
Traveling with kids isn’t about who visits the most places but who still has energy to work after returning. I’ve scouted these 8 cities for you. Pick one and go this weekend. Share in the comments where you most want to take your kids?
