When I reached the top of the hill (Bica - Lg. Calhariz), there it was—the yellow funicular I'd always dreamed of seeing, parked right there! The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, and you can even see the beautiful water (the Tagus River) in the distance, leaving me completely spellbound... It's the ultimate photo spot📸♪ Actually, I had just rewatched Studio Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service" right before coming to Lisbon. The vibe here, with its endless orange rooftops and winding slopes, feels so similar that I couldn't stop geeking out just by walking through the streets🧹🐈⬛ The Bica Funicular is currently out of service (*resumption date TBD), so I couldn't actually ride it. However, this meant I could take my time admiring the carriage and snapping photos on a quiet street, which made me more than happy! A highly recommended spot packed with history and vibrancy~ While walking around Lisbon, I visited "Rossio Square," which has been loved as the center of civic life and culture since the Middle Ages✨ With its beautiful wave-patterned traditional Portuguese cobblestones and the majestic 28-meter-tall Column of Pedro IV towering right in the center, it's a wonderful space that looks picture-perfect from any angle! When I went, there happened to be a lively market going on🎪 A wide variety of stalls lined up, selling everything from paintings and handmade accessories to cheese, ham, flowers, and bags—just looking at them was exciting! It was the perfect atmosphere for souvenir shopping🛍️ Since it was summer, there were plenty of ice cream and fruit juice stalls... But what particularly caught my eye was a super pop and cute juice stand lavishly decorated with piles of fruit🍹 They were selling not only fresh juices for kids, but also orange and passion fruit flavored sangria🍷✨ The fact that adults can fully enjoy it too was a great bonus! Furthermore, since it was right around the season of the "Festa de São João", there were cute decorations of the traditional herb "Manjerico" (a type of basil) placed in the center of the square🪴 (By the way, I heard there is a lovely custom of gifting potted Manjericos to lovers and friends during the Festa de São João♡) When I visited around 12:30 PM, cheerful music was playing and the vibe was amazing🎶 It was full of energy but not overly crowded, creating the perfect atmosphere to stroll around and browse at my own pace! There are also beautiful fountains featuring mermaid sculptures, so just taking a break on a bench makes you feel amazing⛲️ Due to time constraints, my visit was mostly just a quick walk around this time, but it's located right in front of Rossio Station with excellent access, so it has become a favorite spot I'd love to visit again when I come to Lisbon! 🏛️ Jerónimos Monastery If you’re visiting Lisbon, I really think this is a must-visit. It’s honestly beautiful from every angle. The monastery is one of the most important examples of Portuguese Manueline architecture and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cloister inside was my favorite part — so many beautiful details, arches, and really nice light for photos. If you love photography, definitely give yourself enough time here because there are so many beautiful corners to explore. The current entrance fee for the monastery is €18. 🏰 Praça do Comércio One of Lisbon’s most iconic squares, right by the Tagus River. The huge open square is surrounded by beautiful yellow buildings, with the statue of King José I in the middle and the impressive Arco da Rua Augusta behind it. It’s one of those places where you arrive and immediately feel like, “Okay, I’m really in Lisbon now.” 🌊 Cais das Colunas Just walk from Praça do Comércio towards the river and you’ll find these steps leading down to the water with two stone columns. In the past, this was an important arrival point for people entering Lisbon by boat. I really liked how open and peaceful it felt here, with a wide view over the Tagus River. Definitely worth walking down for a few photos. 🛗 Santa Justa Lift This one really caught my attention! I was just walking around the city and suddenly saw this huge old iron lift standing between the buildings and thought, “What is that?” 😂 It was actually built in the early 1900s to connect the lower Baixa area with the higher Carmo area — very useful in such a hilly city. The lift is currently temporarily closed, but you can still see and photograph the beautiful iron structure from outside. ⛪ Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) One of the oldest and most important churches in Lisbon, with a history going all the way back to the 12th century. One of my favorite things here was seeing the classic yellow tram passing right in front of the cathedral. If you catch the timing right, it makes such a perfect Lisbon photo. 🏘️ Alfama I really loved walking around Alfama. The neighborhood is so colorful and full of character, with old houses, beautiful azulejo tiles, tiny balconies, narrow streets and even laundry hanging outside the windows. I love that it still feels like a real neighborhood where people actually live, rather than somewhere created just for tourists. And if you love taking photos, almost every little street has something interesting to photograph. 🌅 Miradouro de Santa Luzia If you’re walking around Alfama, don’t miss this viewpoint. You get such a beautiful view over Lisbon’s orange rooftops with the Tagus River in the background. I had so much fun walking around this area. It felt like I was getting lost inside a little orange-roofed village. The viewpoint itself is also really pretty, with flowers and traditional blue azulejo panels. 🚋 Lisbon Tram & Tram 28 You can’t really think of Lisbon without picturing its little yellow trams. The most famous is Tram 28, which travels through several historic neighborhoods and passes many of the city’s landmarks. What makes it special is seeing these small vintage trams climbing steep hills and squeezing through incredibly narrow streets between old buildings. Even if you don’t ride it, spotting one passing by is part of the Lisbon experience. 🍰 Alcôa – Chiado A lovely place to try traditional Portuguese conventual sweets, which are often made with egg yolks, sugar and almonds. There were so many interesting pastries to choose from, including Torrão Real and Delícia de Amêndoa. Personally, I found the sweets here quite sweet 😆, so if you’re not a big sweet tooth, I’d recommend ordering a few different ones and sharing them. 🧁 Confeitaria Nacional One of Lisbon’s historic pastry shops, dating all the way back to 1829. You’ll find plenty of traditional Portuguese pastries here, including Pastel de Nata. I think part of the experience is not only trying the desserts but also sitting inside a pastry shop that has been part of Lisbon for almost 200 years. ☕ Fábrica Coffee Roasters – Chiado And of course, coffee! I visited the branch on Rua das Flores 63. It’s a specialty coffee shop and a really nice place to take a break after walking around Lisbon — especially because this city has so many hills! After a long day of walking, sitting down with a good cup of coffee felt pretty perfect. 🇵🇹 For me, Lisbon isn’t only about the big landmarks. I really enjoyed all the little things in between — colorful houses, azulejo-covered walls, yellow trams, tiny streets, orange rooftops, Portuguese sweets and stopping for coffee along the way. The entire estate combines Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural styles, filled with hidden symbols related to the Freemasons, alchemy, and the Knights Templar. It was built over time by a wealthy merchant obsessed with mysterious cultures. Every path and grotto holds symbolic meaning. Must-see highlights · Nine-level Initiation Well (nine-level demon tower) The soul of the entire trip! It’s not a water well but a 27-meter-deep spiral stone staircase descending nine levels, corresponding to the nine realms in Dante’s Divine Comedy. Walking down the moss-covered steps, the light dims with each level, and the stone walls feel damp and cool. Looking up from the bottom, the sky is framed by a small circular opening, creating a breathtaking sense of depth. The bottom connects to several man-made underground tunnels. These dark stone caves wind through the estate, leading to waterfalls and hidden lakes. Completing the tour feels like an underground adventure. · Vintage Manueline palace The main building is intricately carved with spires and stone gargoyles, creating a rich atmosphere. Inside, the halls preserve century-old decorations, with secret symbols scattered across beams, columns, and windowsills. Taking time to observe reveals the romantic philosophy hidden by the estate’s owner. · Forest grottoes and secret garden The 4-hectare forest is filled with streams, caves, statues, and fountains. Avoid the tour groups and stroll along the forest paths to discover hidden grottoes. The lush greenery and frequent mist create a magical atmosphere, especially on cloudy days. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a quick coffee break, it’s a fantastic option if you’re travelling on a budget. 🥐 Breakfast for less than €2 Many Pingo Doce cafés offer simple breakfast combos that include coffee and a pastry for under €2—perfect for starting the day without spending much. 🍽️ Generous meals from €4.99 For lunch and dinner, you can choose from freshly prepared Portuguese dishes starting at just €4.99, including a main dish and two side dishes. We were honestly surprised by how generous the portions were. Even better, the menu changes daily, so it’s a great way to try different traditional Portuguese dishes without paying restaurant prices. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough and would not hesitate to book again if we ever return to Lisbon. It is located in a charming area within walking distance of bars, restaurants, shops, and a supermarket, with the Parliament building just a short stroll away. The incredibly friendly staff welcomed us with refreshments during the brief check-in process, offering helpful advice on local attractions and day trips. Overall, the staff are a true asset to the hotel. The hotel itself was impeccably clean and well-maintained, and our room was spacious and comfortable. It was front-facing with a small balcony overlooking the street. Complimentary toiletries, a small fridge, an easy-to-use safe, ample wardrobe space, and a hairdryer were provided. Wifi was strong and consistent, and the TV featured several free channels. Plenty of outlets were available for charging devices. Additionally, housekeeping tidied up the room daily. Breakfast was served between 8 am and 10 am, offering plentiful and fresh options. Guests could choose to dine indoors or in a shaded courtyard outside. The area was consistently clean and orderly. A tram stopped right outside the hotel every 15 minutes from 7 am to midnight, making it extremely convenient for exploring the surroundings and capturing some great photos. What truly stood out was the hotel’s suggestion of arranging a car pickup from and back to the airport, ensuring we reached the hotel effortlessly without getting lost. Our friendly driver came highly recommended. I wholeheartedly give this hotel 5 stars and would gladly return in the future.

I walked it in near silence, just the sound of moving water beside me the entire way. 🏨 Where to Stay Funchal, the capital, gives you the most central base — walkable waterfront, excellent local restaurants, and easy access to both the mountain roads and the coastal cliffs. For something quieter, the northern village of São Vicente puts you inside the landscape rather than adjacent to it. ✈️ Getting There Madeira Airport connects directly to major European hubs and several Middle Eastern cities. Lisbon surprised me. It’s one of those cities where you don’t need to rush between attractions — the charm is in wandering through tiled streets, catching viewpoints, stopping for coffee, and letting the city unfold. ☀️ Day 1 — Explore Lisbon City (Chiado • Baixa • Alfama) Start the morning in Chiado with coffee and pastries before walking downhill into Baixa’s grand squares and streets. Then slowly make your way towards Alfama — Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood and my favourite part of the city. Must-do: ✨ Hop between the miradouros (viewpoints) — every one gives a different angle of Lisbon’s red rooftops and the Tagus River ☕ Stop at cafés instead of rushing attractions 🚶 Get lost in the narrow streets of Alfama (this was honestly the best part) Save your energy for sunset — Lisbon glows differently in the evening. 🌊 Day 2 — The Perfect Day Trip from Lisbon If you only have one extra day, this route is worth it: 📍 Sintra — colourful palaces and fairytale vibes 📍 Cabo da Roca — standing at the westernmost point of continental Europe 📍 Cascais — seaside town energy and a slower pace 📍 Belém — end the day back in Lisbon with pastries and riverside views It’s a packed day but gives you a little of everything: history, coastlines, viewpoints and city life. 48 hours wasn’t enough for Lisbon — but it was enough to make me want to come back. ✨ Save this itinerary for your Lisbon trip.
