Wild boulder playground in Alabama Hills, Eastern Sierra
Just outside Lone Pine, the Alabama Hills is the kind of place that makes you pull over every two minutes. Round orange boulders pile up in wild shapes, and behind them the jagged Sierra Nevada rises straight up, including Mount Whitney. It was one of the most fun stops on our Eastern Sierra road trip.
It's about 18,610 acres of rocks and open desert, protected as a National Scenic Area since 2019. More than 400 movies have been filmed here, including Gladiator, Iron Man and Django Unchained, so driving Movie Road between the boulders feels like rolling through a movie set.
We drove the dirt roads, stopped wherever a rock looked fun and went hunting for arches, holes and funny "faces" in the granite. The famous Mobius Arch is an easy loop of roughly half a mile, and its opening frames Mount Whitney and Lone Pine Peak. Lathe Arch, Heart Arch and the Eye of Alabama Hills are other formations to look for.
