Before our Switzerland trip, I spent weeks researching packing lists. Some suggested bringing heavy winter clothing, while others recommended packing as light as possible. After completing our 12-day, 11-night family journey through Lucerne, Grindelwald, Zermatt and Zurich, I realised something much simpler: Packing the right things matters far more than packing more things. A simple combination of a T-shirt, sweater and wind jacket was enough for most days. When the mountain weather changed, we simply added or removed a layer instead of carrying a bulky coat everywhere. A thermal bottle became part of our daily routine, while lotion, basic medicines, soluble vitamins and individually packed honey sticks helped keep both our child and elderly parent comfortable throughout the journey. One thing I probably wouldn’t worry about next time is bringing too many daily necessities. Supermarkets such as Coop, Migros and convenience stores like k kiosk were easy to find in almost every city. Whether we needed drinks, snacks, milk, diapers or simple groceries, buying them locally was never a problem. Looking back, the most valuable things we packed weren’t necessarily the most expensive. It gives me 50% off most train, bus, boat, and mountain transport fares, which worked out better for my itinerary. If you're staying in Interlaken, there's another bonus to keep in mind. Most hotels and Airbnb hosts provide an Interlaken Guest Card, which gives you free travel on local public buses within the Interlaken area. This can help you save even more, especially if you're using the Half Fare Card. There isn't a "best" pass for everyone. It all depends on how you plan to travel. Before buying a pass, list down the journeys and mountain excursions you want to take, add up the costs, and compare them with the price of each pass. A little planning can save you a lot of money. This method is slightly less flexible than the Swiss Travel Pass, but it can save you hundreds of francs on your trip. A little tip many people overlook: in some cities like Basel, Geneva, or Interlaken, when staying at hotels, hostels, or many Airbnbs, you'll be given a Guest Card for free or discounted public transport within the city. Lucerne Station → Chapel Bridge → St. Leodegar Church (where Audrey Hepburn got married) → Lion Monument → Musegg Wall → Old Town → Jesuit Church. 📍Chapel Bridge | Europe’s oldest wooden bridge Built in 1333, the wood has lasted nearly 700 years. The bridge is lined with flowers, an octagonal water tower stands beside it, and the roof is painted with over 100 scenes depicting the Black Death and Lucerne’s history. In the early morning, the bridge is empty, with only the sound of water and birds. At night, the entire bridge glows. 📍Musegg Wall | A secret vantage point overlooking the city Search "Mannliturm" on your map; this tower offers the best view—red rooftops of the Old Town, Lake Lucerne, and snow-capped Alps all in one frame. ⚠️ We didn’t time it well this trip and unfortunately missed it. I recommend going before sunset when the light is soft. It commemorates the 760 Swiss mercenaries who sacrificed their lives protecting Louis XVI during the French Revolution in 1792. Standing in front of it, the entire pool is silent. I said nothing and stood there for a long time. 📍Lake Lucerne | The swans are the true owners here The water is as clear as glass, and the swans swim slowly, not afraid of people at all. If you sit by the lake, they come close—you can’t tell who the real tourists are. When tired, find a bench and just do nothing. Later I realized, in Lucerne, doing nothing is the best itinerary. 📍Where to stay You must stay at least one night. The sunset at dusk and the tranquility of the early morning are the two most valuable tickets to this city. We booked Hotel De la Paix, located in the Old Town, a 10-minute walk from the train station. The balcony is huge—open the door in the morning to the peaceful Old Town. Lucerne is very small, small enough to explore in a day. But it’s also very deep, so deep that you keep thinking about it after you leave. Switzerland has left all its gentleness to Lucerne.
