#sunsetplaces I thought I knew what a great sunset looked like—until I found myself standing on the narrowing sandbar of Mataking Island at 6:15 PM, holding my sandals in one hand and a half-eaten coconut in the other, watching the tide rapidly eat away my path back to the resort. Mataking, a tiny tropical paradise off the coast of Semporna, Malaysia, completely redefined the sunset game for me. The island is split into two parts—Mataking Besar and Mataking Kecil—connected by a long, silky sandbar. At low tide, you can walk between them. But as the afternoon winds down, the ocean slowly reclaims the path, just as the sky starts to explode into shades of molten gold, violet, and deep coral. My absolute favorite moment happened on my second night. I had walked all the way out to the smaller island to explore the jungle trail. I lost track of time taking photos of the ridiculous gradient in the sky, only to turn around and realize the sandbar was already ankle-deep under water! Instead of panicking, I waded through the warm, crystal-clear sea, watching sea turtles surface right next to me under a sky that looked like a canvas painted by someone who couldn't choose between orange and magenta. That evening made me realize why Mataking earns a top spot for #sunsetplaces : it’s not just about looking at the horizon, but feeling completely submerged in the golden hour. Watching the colors reflect off the shallow waters on both sides of the sandbar is a core memory I'll be chasing for years. Now I’m curious—what is the single most surreal spot you’ve ever watched the sun go down? Did you have to race against the tide like I did, or was it a chill balcony view? Drop your favorite sunset places and tips below, I need to add to my bucket list!

Sea Experience | The "Jelly Sea" that left foreign tourists in awe😭 Real island-hopping guide + hard-learned lessons✨ You only know it when you've been here in person—Malaysia's ocean will truly change your perception! During this island-hopping trip, I recorded everything with my camera. The moment my foreign friends saw the ocean, they couldn't stop exclaiming, frantically recording videos with their phones, and kept marveling at how incredibly beautiful the sea was. As the speedboat left the pier, the water transitioned from mint green to deep sapphire blue, blending with the sky. While snorkeling, schools of tropical fish swam right by my hands in the clear water. By sunset, the entire sea surface was covered in shimmering golden light. The impact of being there in person is something photos and videos can only capture one-tenth of. 🌊Recommended destinations ▪️Semporna | The ultimate "glass sea" Timba-Timba Island, Mataking Island—the go-to for "jelly seas" and white sand beaches. The top choice for snorkeling and diving with stunning ocean views. ▪️Kota Kinabalu, Sabah | Legendary sunsets Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park island-hopping is a relaxed itinerary. You must go for the sunset at sea; choose this if you have limited time. ▪️Langkawi | Calm waters Suitable for family trips; sea cruises and mangrove tours can be arranged. ✅Must-do activities ✔Island-hopping speedboat | Choose the early boat for calmer waves, clearer water, and better photos ✔Snorkeling | No swimming skills needed; see schools of fish and coral up close ✔Sunset cruise | Great atmosphere, perfect for videos ✔Parasailing/Banana boat | Try these if you like thrills 🏨Accommodation tips ▫️Semporna water villas: Wake up to the ocean, great vacation vibes; avoid low-quality, cheap options ▫️Kota Kinabalu city hotels: Good value, convenient for food and shopping, easy access to the pier for daily trips ▫️Langkawi beach homestays: Suitable for families traveling together ⚠️Tips & warnings❗ 1️⃣Take seasickness medication 30 minutes before boarding! It's basically useless if you take it after the waves get rough. Don't force yourself to go out if you're feeling unwell. 2️⃣The UV rays at sea are extremely strong! Prepare high-SPF waterproof sunscreen. It's best to bring your own rash guard, as they are expensive to buy locally and can also protect you from coral scratches. 3️⃣Make sure your camera and phone have reliable waterproof bags; splashing waves can easily damage equipment. 4️⃣It's recommended to bring your own snorkeling mask and snorkel, as public ones are less hygienic. Don't snorkel far away alone, stay away from undercurrents, and do not touch coral or starfish. 5️⃣Don't believe merchants who guarantee you'll "definitely see sea turtles"—marine life sightings depend on luck. The rainy season from November–February brings rough waves, and trips are easily canceled, so buy insurance that includes cancellation protection. 6️⃣Have Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) cash ready, as many places on the islands don't accept mobile payments. Ensure your passport has more than 6 months of validity, and remember to get your entry stamp when arriving in East Malaysia. 7️⃣If you encounter Bajau children, don't give them money or food, as you may get surrounded. Just politely avoid them. Looking back at the photos and videos, I'm still moved by this shade of blue. Online photos all look the same, but only by standing on this sea yourself can you truly understand the heartfelt awe of the foreign tourists. When you come to Malaysia, make sure to set aside time to head out to sea🌊

#worthitornot Mataking Island in Malaysia shimmers like a secret jewel in the Celebes Sea, its powdery sands kissed by turquoise waves and coral gardens alive with color. The island hums with the rhythm of gentle tides and the quiet grace of marine life, a sanctuary where wanderers find stillness and tropical beauty woven into every horizon. As twilight descends, the sky glows with hues of rose and amber, casting a spell across the calm waters. Mataking becomes more than an island; it is a ritual of renewal, a hidden refuge where solitude and wonder entwine beneath the fading light. Here, every sunset writes a memory upon the shore, eternal and unyielding.

You only truly understand Semporna once you've been there—a secret realm where the blue of the ocean is scattered like crushed gems…✨ Located in the southeast of Sabah, Malaysia, this small fishing village is completely surrounded by Tun Sakaran Marine Park. With its crystal-clear "jelly" waters, fine white sandy beaches, and a colorful underwater coral world, every snapshot looks like a scene from a movie. ✅ Must-read before you go | Traveling to Malaysia visa-free is super easy Malaysia now offers visa-free entry, perfect for spontaneous trips! Just ensure your passport is valid for more than 6 months. No need to apply for a visa in advance, saving you a lot of paperwork, time, and visa fees, making travel much more accessible. 💰 Practical tips for spending & communication 1. Cash is king: Most places in Semporna town and island resorts only accept cash. You can withdraw Malaysian Ringgit directly from ATMs, but there will be a small transaction fee. It's more cost-effective to exchange currency before you leave. 2. Celcom is the top choice for SIM cards: The signal stability around the islands is excellent. You'll have internet access throughout your island-hopping and snorkeling trips, so you can post your ocean photos to social media without any lag. 🏡 Honest advice on avoiding accommodation pitfalls I really don't recommend booking low-priced water villas for a few hundred yuan! They often have old facilities, murky water nearby, and some even have safety issues, leading to a poor stay experience. I highly recommend Mataking Island Resort: It's a true one-island-one-resort destination where non-guests cannot land. The entire stunning sandbar is exclusive to guests. Be sure to book at least half a month in advance during peak season, or you'll likely find no availability. 🌊 Tips for avoiding pitfalls during island trips 1. Hiking on Bohey Dulang Island: The mountain path is steep and rocky. You must wear sneakers/flat shoes; flip-flops and sandals are very slippery. Safety first! 2. Flight selection: Prioritize direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau. The flight is only 1 hour, saving time and money. Avoid direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, as they take longer, cost more, and are a hassle. 3. Solo travel tip: Most island resorts offer all-inclusive packages per person. Solo travelers will need to pay a single supplement. It's best to find a travel buddy to save money and have company. 🗓️ Classic 6–7 day itinerary, follow this for a hassle-free trip Day 1–2: City walk in Kuala Lumpur. Visit the Petronas Twin Towers, Putra Mosque, and Merdeka Square. On the way, stop by Malacca to immerse yourself in the retro Nanyang charm. Day 3–6: In-depth island hopping in Semporna! Hike to the top of Bohey Dulang for a view of the "Eye of the Ocean" + snorkeling, take photos at the Mataking Island sandbar, and visit the Bajau sea gypsies on Mabul Island. Be healed every day by the layers of gradient blue ocean. Day 7: Return trip. If you have extra time, add a trip to Kota Kinabalu! The pink and purple sunset over the ocean in Kota Kinabalu is breathtakingly romantic. You can also experience sunset paddleboarding, rainforest hiking, and night jungle firefly watching for a perfect atmosphere. 💬 Heartfelt thoughts The healing power of Semporna cannot be fully captured by a camera. The crystal-clear glass-like sea, the gentle, salty sea breeze, and the schools of fish swimming freely—once you step foot on this sea, you won't want to leave. This is probably the ideal island paradise in everyone's heart.

Only after seeing Semporna's jelly-like sea with my own eyes did I understand what a marine Eden it is, healing all fatigue. The clear, gradient blue sea, independent overwater bungalows, and ribbon-like sandbanks. Paddle a canoe through the overwater boardwalk adorned with bougainvillea. Every frame is like a wallpaper, romantically unreal. ✅ Essential travel tips | Save these to avoid pitfalls 1 | Visa & documents Malaysia offers visa-free entry to Chinese tourists. Mandatory requirement: Passport validity ≥ 6 months remaining. Be sure to check before departure. 2 | Currency & communication ▫️ Most local shops and resorts do not support online payments. It's more convenient to exchange Malaysian Ringgit in advance. ▫️ ATMs support UnionPay withdrawals, but a service fee will be charged. ▫️ Celcom is the top choice for SIM cards, with stable signal coverage across the islands. Many tour groups offer them as a gift. 3 | Accommodation tips to avoid pitfalls ❌ Be cautious with low-priced overwater bungalows (a few hundred): Facilities are basic, activities are very limited, and the experience is poor. ✅ Mataking Island Resort is highly recommended. It's the only accommodation on the island. Non-guests are prohibited from landing. The popular sandbank can only be visited by staying guests, so be sure to book in advance! 4 | Flights & attire tips ▫️ Bohey Dulang Island is Semporna's only climbing island. The mountain path is difficult, so be sure to wear sports shoes. ▫️ Flight cost-effectiveness: Kota Kinabalu to Tawau is only 40 minutes, saving time and money; Kuala Lumpur to Tawau is 3 hours, with higher ticket prices. ▫️ Most island resorts offer all-inclusive per-person rates. Single occupancy requires an additional room charge, so traveling with two people is more cost-effective. 📍 Two classic travel routes ▫️ 6-7 day basic route: Kuala Lumpur + Semporna Explore the cityscapes of Kuala Lumpur and Malacca, then spend 3-4 days snorkeling, island hopping, and relaxing by the sea. ▫️ Extended healing route: Kuala Lumpur + Kota Kinabalu + Semporna Additionally discover Kota Kinabalu's pink-purple sea sunsets, sunset paddleboarding, and the rainforest firefly sanctuary. Final thoughts The filter-free glass sea, overwater wooden houses blooming with flowers—Semporna fulfills all my island fantasies.

Honestly, I advise everyone not to come to Semporna in August or September 🌊! This is not a warning about bad experiences. The dry season islands are stunningly beautiful and captivating! The waves are minimal, the water is clear and transparent, the jelly-like sea layers are distinct, and snorkeling often brings encounters with turtles and schools of fish. Visa-free travel is convenient, island-hopping packages offer great value, and you can both check in at the popular overwater bungalows and explore the sea villages. It’s so relaxing you won’t want to leave. 🏨 Tested exclusive tips to save on accommodation 1. You don’t need to stay in expensive overwater bungalows the whole time. Reserve just 1 night at Kapalai or Mabul Island for photos. Stay the rest of the time at hotels near Semporna town pier, costing 300–500 yuan per night. They’re right downstairs from the boat pier, saving you thousands in budget. 2. Book overwater bungalows online 60 days in advance to get a 30% early bird discount. Booking last minute at the hotel doubles the price. Avoid agents reselling rooms by the roadside. 3. When traveling with a group, don’t book rooms separately. Choose apartment suites for a lower per-person cost. They have laundry facilities, making it easy to wash wet clothes after going out to sea. 4. Avoid cheap, remote guesthouses near the pier. Most have unstable water supply and many mosquitoes. Staying in the central area is safer for accommodation and travel. 📌 9 must-visit key spots 1. Pearl Island 8:00 AM–4:00 PM | marine park ticket included. Volcano summit viewpoint overlooking the seven-color gradient sea. Tip: Go early at 8 AM when fewer people are climbing. Wear non-slip shoes as the trail is slippery. 2. Battleship Island Open all day | included in package. Long crescent white sand beach with shallow waters full of clownfish. Tip: Morning light is soft. At low tide, the trailing sand beach fully appears, perfect for silhouette photos. 3. Mantabuan Island Open all day | included in package. Milky blue shallow waters with starfish everywhere. You can see the Bajau village in the distance. Tip: Bring some small stationery to share with local kids for heartwarming smiles. 4. Kapalai Island Open all day | separate fee for island access. A Maldives alternative with overwater wooden bungalows and a boardwalk leading to the glassy sea. Tip: Afternoon light is gentle for photos. Non-guests have limited visiting time, so don’t overstay. 5. Mabul Island Open all day | free access. Half luxury overwater bungalows, half sea gypsy village, combining culture and sea views. Tip: Shoot at 4 PM with bougainvillea and blue sea for maximum atmosphere. 6. Mataking Island Open all day | island-hopping package. Large and small islands connected by a sand bridge at low tide with visibility over 30 meters. Honestly, before coming to Semporna in July and August, I was worried about the summer crowds and murky water. After the trip, I was completely healed—it’s really not recommended to come then. During the dry season, the glass sea is so clear you can see the coral underwater. Snorkeling with sea turtles is incredibly thrilling, seafood is so cheap you can enjoy lobster freely, and spending every day in the blue sea makes you not want to leave! Semporna in summer stays at a constant 26℃, with sea breezes carrying the scent of coconuts. The islands scattered across the sea look like green gems, a real-life ocean utopia 🌴🌊 Tested exclusive tips to save on transportation 1. Airport transfers: Book a shared ride online in advance for 25 MYR per person (≈38 CNY). It takes 1.5 hours from Tawau Airport directly to hotels in town, saving nearly half the cost compared to taxis on site. If on a budget, take the airport green bus, which departs on the hour at the same price and leaves once full without detours. 2. Getting around the island: Semporna town is very small. The pier and seafood market are within walking distance. Rent a scooter for 30 MYR per day to explore nearby areas. For island hopping, choose a 6-person shared boat day tour. The Tun Sakaran route costs about 280 CNY per person, including boat fees, snorkeling gear, and a simple meal, saving 70% compared to private speedboats. 3. Pitfall warning: Don’t trust roadside touts offering cheap illegal speedboats without life jackets that take detours. For island hopping, choose official dive shop packages that include all equipment with no extra rental fees. It’s safer and worry-free. 9 must-visit core spots 1. Tun Sakaran Marine Park (Pearl Island) 8:30 AM–4:00 PM | Climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the seven-colored layered sea. Tip: Wear sneakers to hike, arrive early to avoid crowds, and it takes only 20 minutes to reach the top. 2. Mabul Island Open all day | Water villa village combined with Bajau culture, where you can snorkel and encounter sea turtles. Tip: Take photos of the pink-orange sunset after 4 PM. Staying in a water villa includes free snorkeling and a visit to the sea nomad village. 3. Kapalai Island 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | All water villas on a sea jetty with rich and intact coral reefs underwater. Tip: Only guests can land on the island. Day tours allow snorkeling around the perimeter. High chances of seeing clownfish and sea turtles. 4. Mataking Island 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | Long white sand spit with a sea turtle conservation center. Tip: The sand spit appears fully only at low tide. It’s beginner-friendly for snorkeling and you might spot wild baby sea turtles. 5. Shipwreck Island Open all day | Milky white sand spit with crystal-clear jelly-like water. Tip: Arrive at 8 AM when it’s less crowded and the water is clearest. Take photos at the end of the beach without people. Ideal for beginner snorkelers. 6. Timbatimbai Island Open all day | A secluded natural sandbank with few visitors and peaceful scenery, like a hidden island. Tip: The fine sandbank appears only at low tide. Snorkel to see colorful coral and take photos without competing for spots. 7. Bangbang Island 8:00 AM–5:00 PM | Family-friendly island where you can participate in sea turtle release experiences. Tip: Staying at the resort includes free morning snorkeling. The beach is gentle and safe, perfect for kids and worry-free for parents. 8. Semporna seafood market 3:00 PM–8:00 PM | Fresh seafood at very low prices, making seafood freedom easy to achieve. Tip: Bargain before closing at 5:30 PM, start by cutting prices in half. Use Fat Mama’s shop for cooking at 15–25 MYR per kilogram. 9. Longmen jetty Open all day | Southeast Asian-style wooden pier with a great night atmosphere. Tip: Take photos of fishing boats returning at dusk, enjoy the sea breeze while walking. Free entry and great for photos. Semporna in July and August really maximizes the joy of island vacations. The dry season brings peak water visibility, most islands are open for free, seafood is affordable and abundant, and there’s no overcrowding from over-commercialization—just slow, healing time in the blue sea. If you want a pure island to relax and unwind in summer, Semporna is definitely a hidden gem. Once you come, you’ll understand why some people never want to leave.

Honestly, the Maldives is beautiful, but Semporna is just as good. It's a 3-hour direct flight, visa-free, and costs only a fraction. Let me share some unforgettable moments. The sea around Mataking Island is layered, mint green in the shallows and sapphire blue in the depths. Underwater, there's Malaysia's only underwater post office, where you can actually send mail. Snorkeling at Pom Pom Island, large sea turtles swim slowly beneath you. The hike up Bohey Dulang Island is a bit tiring, but the turquoise lagoon viewed from the summit makes it all worthwhile. At Mabul Island's overwater bungalows, the waves lap at your feet during high tide. After the tide recedes at Sibuan Island, the white sandbar stretches into the sea, making for incredible aerial views. Choose from three island-hopping routes: Mataking + Pom Pom + Timba Timba: A classic combination, perfect for first-time visitors. Mabul Island + Kapalai: Ideal for couples, focusing on overwater bungalows and snorkeling. Bohey Dulang Island + Sibuan Island + Mantabuan Island: Combines mountain climbing for views with relaxing on the beach. Food is cheap and plentiful. Creamy butter tiger prawns are a must-try. Buy seafood at the pier and remember to bargain for processing. Night market durian is incredibly sweet. A few essential tips: Visa-free, so you can go anytime. Exchange more cash in town. Bring plenty of sunscreen, both physical and chemical. It's best to bring your own snorkeling gear. Go early and enjoy before it gets overrun by tourists.

Stop saying the Maldives is expensive. This place offers 3-hour direct flights, is visa-free, has a crystal-clear, jelly-like sea, and costs a fraction of the price. Here are a few highlights that will capture your heart: The layered, gradient "jelly sea" of Mataking Island is unbelievably beautiful. Underwater, you'll find Malaysia's only underwater post office, where you can mail a postcard to yourself. Pom Pom Island is a sea turtle conservation base, and you can see large sea turtles swimming beside you while snorkeling. Climb to the top of Bohey Dulang Island for a panoramic view of the entire marine park, with its turquoise lagoon resembling a spilled palette. Mabul Island features a charming mix of overwater bungalows and Bajau stilt houses, rich in cultural atmosphere. The white sands and sandbar of Sibuan Island extend into the sea at low tide, perfect for stunning, unedited photos. Choose from these 3 island-hopping routes: Mataking + Pom Pom + Timba Timba: Jelly sea + glass-bottom boat + sea turtles, a must-do for first-timers. Mabul Island + Kapalai: Focuses on overwater bungalow photos and snorkeling, ideal for couples. Bohey Dulang Island + Sibuan Island + Mantabuan: A full experience of hiking + beach + snorkeling. What to eat that's cheap and fresh: Creamy butter tiger prawns and typhoon shelter crab are must-tries. At local Chinese seafood stalls, you can buy ingredients and have them cooked; remember to bargain for half price. The Musang King durian at the pier night market is incredibly sweet. A few things you must know: Visa-free, so you can go directly even without prior travel history. Bring enough cash, as card payment options are limited on the islands. Apply sunscreen generously, or you'll get uneven tan lines. It's recommended to bring your own snorkeling gear, as public ones may not be hygienic. Before it gets too crowded, now's the time to go.

Breakfast at roadside stalls is highly cost-effective. ▲ Affordable simple meals: Chicken fried rice, satay skewers, around CNY 20 per person for a full meal. Overwater resort meals are highly overpriced, so try to eat in town before going to the island. ⭕ Food tips to avoid pitfalls: Always weigh seafood on the spot. Refuse pre-processed quotes. Do not book a private car. Group island hopping tours cost CNY 120 per person per day, and prices are lower for groups of 4. ▲ Supplies: Buy all sunscreen, swimsuits, snacks, and drinking water at supermarkets in Tawau. Renting one on the island costs CNY 80 per use, saving hundreds of yuan if you bring your own. 🚫 Key pitfalls to avoid ▲ Island hopping traps: Low-cost tours may push paid deep diving and photography services. Confirm pure play with no hidden costs before booking. ▲ Sea vendors: Bajau villagers sell shells and bracelets at inflated prices. Politely decline if not interested. ▲ Accommodation pitfalls: Many low-cost overwater bungalows have shared bathrooms. Confirm private balconies and stairs to the sea before booking. ▲ Seasonal reminder: November to February is the rainy season, with strong winds that can lead to island hopping cancellations. March to October has clear waters and is more suitable for travel. Overall budget: CNY 3,000–6,000 for 6 days and 5 nights for 2 people, excluding airfare. With its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and vibrant underwater world, every frame looks like a movie scene. ✅ Must-Read Before You Go (Visa-Free Entry is Super Convenient) Malaysia now offers visa-free entry, making it perfect for spontaneous trips! As long as your passport is valid for ≥6 months, you can go directly without needing an extra visa, saving both time and money~ 💰 Spending & Communication Tips · Cash is King: Most places in Semporna town and on the islands prefer cash. You can withdraw Malaysian Ringgit directly from ATMs, though there's a small fee. It's more cost-effective to exchange money beforehand. · Choose Celcom for your SIM card! The signal on the islands is incredibly stable, even when you're out snorkeling, so you won't miss a beat sharing on social media~ 🏡 Accommodation Pitfalls: The Honest Truth Listen to my advice! Avoid cheap water bungalows that cost only a few hundred! They often have old facilities, poor water quality, and might even have safety hazards. They're really not worth it. · Mataking Island: One island, one resort. Non-guests are not allowed on the island! The stunning sandbar is only accessible to guests, so be sure to book at least half a month in advance, or you might miss out~ 🌊 Playtime Pitfalls to Watch Out For · Climbing Bohey Dulang Island (Pearl Island): You MUST wear sports shoes/flat shoes! The mountain path is a bit steep, and flip-flops or sandals are very easy to slip in. Safety first~ · How to choose flights: Prioritize Kota Kinabalu → Tawau, which takes about 1 hour, saving time and money. Avoid direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau; they're long, expensive, and too much hassle! · Solo travelers beware: Island resorts are usually all-inclusive per person. If you're traveling alone, you'll have to pay a single supplement. It's recommended to find a travel buddy to save money and have more fun~ 🗓️ 6-7 Day Classic Itinerary (Follow this to avoid pitfalls) · Day 1-2: Explore Kuala Lumpur city → Check out Malacca, experience Southeast Asian charm · Day 3-6: Island hopping in Semporna! Climb Bohey Dulang Island + snorkel, take photos at Mataking's sandbar, see the Sea Gypsies on Mabul Island. Every day you'll be healed by the blue~ · Day 7: Return trip (If you have time, add Kota Kinabalu!) Kota Kinabalu is absolutely amazing! The pink and purple sunsets are breathtaking, and there's sunset paddleboarding, rainforest trekking, and night firefly watching. It's so romantic you won't want to leave~ 💬 A Little Something Extra The beauty of Semporna is a healing that cameras can't fully capture. The transparent sea, the gentle breeze, the free-swimming fish – once you're here, you won't want to leave. Perhaps this is what an ideal life looks like~
