The lane from the road to the farm is the mossy bit — a 300 m dirt track through secondary cloud forest, moss on the fence posts and the pambil palms, 16°C, a hummingbird trough buzzing with 4 species before you even reach the enclosure. Inside, 1,000+ butterflies including blue morpho, but the lane beat the greenhouse for atmosphere: I stopped at 09:05, the moss on a fallen guaba branch bright green, a morpho drifting past at eye level, and ate a 2 USD empanada from the farm café. Mistake: I wore shorts and the no-see-ums ate my ankles on the lane — long trousers even at 09:00. Another: the farm closes 14:00 Tue/Wed; I almost came Wednesday afternoon and would've found a locked gate. Attended the 2-hour ring workshop yesterday with Helen, and she was incredible! The whole experience was fantastic and very well organized. I ended up creating a shop-worthy ring that is completely unique to me, and I absolutely loved it. In this workshop, you get to design a ring to fit any finger you choose, using one of three widths of silver and three design options. It’s definitely a must-try experience!

Cacao's roots are actually said to have originated in Ecuador. Because of its high nutritional value and unique characteristics, it played a very important role in ancient civilizations as a gift from the gods. Therefore, Ecuador still has many cacao farms, and some of the world's highest quality chocolates. Unfortunately, that chocolate was too expensive for me to eat, but instead, I was able to go on a cacao tour, which I'll introduce! Chocolate factory visited 🏭 YUMBOS chocolate in Mindo Access 🚌 3 hours northwest by bus from Quito About Mindo 🌳 A small village in the Ecuadorian wetlands. Completely different from Quito, it's incredibly peaceful. Some houses even had their doors left open. From cacao bean to chocolate 1. Harvesting It takes 3-5 years for cacao beans to bear fruit. Because they get damaged, they are basically harvested by hand. 2. Fermentation After removing the cocoa beans (with the pulp), place them in a wooden box, cover with banana leaves, and wait for about a week. During this time, the sugars in the pulp are broken down by microorganisms in the banana leaves, resulting in a milder flavor. 3. Roasting This is where the cocoa beans take on their familiar appearance. 4. Grinding The beans, with the skins still attached, are ground into pieces about 3 mm in size. 5. Separating the Skins and Seeds (Fourth image) A large fan is used to blow air from the back while the beans are passed through a mesh screen on top. Only the light skins are blown away and collect in the corners of the box. 6. Mixing The cocoa nibs are further crushed into a paste using another machine, then milk and sugar are added. 7. Tempering If the chocolate is cooled too quickly while still hot, it won't have a crisp texture, so it's cooled on a table while being stirred until it reaches the appropriate temperature. 8. Mindo is a small village located about three hours northeast of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, by bus. I visited this village to experience a chocolate tour, but the place I stayed at was so wonderful that I want to introduce it. Accommodation 🏠 The Temple III, Mindo The house is designed to be very open, with plenty of windows and a balcony. The kitchen is spacious and equipped with all the necessary cooking utensils, making it enjoyable to cook here. The guitar in the first photo is adorable 🎸❤️. Although it's a hostel, there weren't many people, and it was clean and comfortable to stay in. 🌿 Village atmosphere It was a peaceful village surrounded by forests. The people were laid-back, and those passing by on the streets would smile and greet you (in Quito, the atmosphere feels more tense). It seems to rain every day, so rain gear is essential ☔️. This village changed my image of Ecuador as being extremely dangerous 😌.
