Lijiang is great, but I won't go back, because it's just too easy to get scammed 🥹
To be honest!
The scenery in Lijiang is truly impeccable!
Look up and you'll see Yulong Snow Mountain, blue skies and white clouds, the evening breeze in the ancient town, small bridges and flowing water, and the golden mountain at sunrise.
Gentle, healing, romantic—everything beautiful about faraway places is here.
You must visit at least once in your life to see with your own eyes what this pure land on earth looks like.
But having just returned from Lijiang, once is enough to fulfill the dream; I definitely won't be back for a second trip!
The scenery is top-tier, but so are the scams 😭
There are too many hidden traps, low-price bait, and information gaps. Honest travelers are very easily taken advantage of here.
I've put together a real, unfiltered guide for the average traveler to avoid 90% of the traps. If you're planning to go, just copy this!
✨ Let's start with the praise! Reasons why Lijiang is worth the trip
▪️ Yulong Snow Mountain is truly sacred and healing
Seeing the clouds clear over the snow mountain and the sunlight spilling down is healing.
Glacier Park and Blue Moon Valley are as beautiful as sapphire lakes, clean and pure; all fatigue vanishes instantly.
▪️ The ancient town atmosphere is one of a kind
The night view of Dayan Ancient Town, the quiet comfort of Shuhe Ancient Town, and the original ecology of Baisha Ancient Town.
Sitting at the entrance of the ancient town, feeling the evening breeze, listening to folk music, and soaking up the sun—the slow life is so comfortable.
▪️ Photo-ready without filters
The reflection of the snow mountain at Qingxi Reservoir, the niche healing grasslands of Wenhai Village, and the crystal-clear Lugu Lake.
No need to look for specific angles; just look up and you have wallpaper-level scenery. Even beginners can take great photos.
▪️ A super healing pace
Far from the fast pace of the city, strolling slowly through the ancient town, watching the snow mountain, and eating street food.
Perfect for clearing your mind and healing any unhappiness.
❌ Why won't I come back? The honest truth that will discourage the average traveler
1️⃣ Traps everywhere, impossible to guard against!
The ancient town entrance is full of touts and low-price tour groups.
The 99-yuan one-day snow mountain tour, low-price chartered cars, and free guided tours are all shopping traps.
You're forced to visit silver shops, jade shops, and tea shops; if you don't buy anything, they give you attitude. It's a total waste of time.
Also, the so-called 20-yuan "shortcut" to skip tickets is a scam; you end up having to pay for the ticket anyway.
2️⃣ Yulong Snow Mountain tickets are hard to get, with very low fault tolerance
The biggest trap is the Big Cableway ticket!!
You must camp out to grab them in advance; tickets are released at 8:00 PM every night, and in peak season, they sell out in minutes.
You can't buy them on-site. If you don't get a ticket, you can only take the small cableway and miss the core scenery.
People who come last minute will likely leave with regrets.
3️⃣ The prices are deceptive and specifically target tourists
Oxygen tanks and down jackets at the foot of the mountain are marked up double.
Renting a down jacket at the entrance for 80–120 yuan is completely unnecessary; just bring your own thick coat.
Don't touch the silver, jade, or Pu'er tea in the ancient town if you don't know what you're doing—nine out of ten purchases are scams.
Street stall souvenirs are heavily marked up and have very low value for money.
4️⃣ Huge gap in accommodation quality
The beautiful "influencer" homestays in online photos are often not what you get.
The stone roads deep in the ancient town are hard to walk on, and dragging luggage is a nightmare.
No car access, lots of mosquitoes, damp and cold, and prices skyrocket in peak season. Not worth it.
5️⃣ Influencer activities are all traps
Don't just go horseback riding at Lashihai! Lots of temporary price gouging and random fees.
Most "influencer" check-in spots are man-made, crowded, and lackluster, with a terrible experience.
✅ A worry-free 3-day, 2-night itinerary for lazy travelers (no traps, no rushing)
Day 1: Arrive in Lijiang -> Check in near the ancient town -> Visit Dayan Ancient Town -> Sifang Street night view -> Listen to folk music in the evening breeze
Day 2: Yulong Snow Mountain one-day tour (Glacier Big Cableway + Blue Moon Valley + Baishui River) -> Watch the ancient town night view in the evening
Day 3: Baisha Ancient Town (most original) -> Quiet stroll in Shuhe Ancient Town -> Eat local food at Zhongyi Market -> Return trip
🍜 Local hidden gems | Avoid "influencer" traps
✅ Must eat: Cured pork rib hot pot, chicken rice noodles, Lijiang baba (flatbread), chickpea jelly, wild mushroom hot pot
✅ Snacks: Fresh flower cakes baked in the alley, grilled milk fan
❌ Avoid: Influencer restaurants on the main street of the ancient town, high-priced set meals, restaurants with touts at the door
👉 For authentic food, head straight to Zhongyi Market. Locals shop there year-round; it's affordable, authentic, and trap-free.
💡 Hard-earned tips to avoid traps | Listen to advice and don't get ripped off
1. Absolutely do not book roadside low-price tours, free guided tours, or low-price chartered cars. Use official, legitimate channels for all itineraries.
2. For the Yulong Snow Mountain Big Cableway, grab tickets at 8:00 PM every night on the "Lijiang Tourism Group" mini-program! Fill in your information and be ready to grab them right on time.
3. Don't buy too many oxygen tanks; one per person is enough. Buy them in the city in advance; don't stock up at high prices in the scenic area.
4. Don't book accommodation in the deepest part of the ancient town! Dragging luggage is exhausting, and it's inconvenient to get in and out. Choosing the North Gate/outskirts is the most worry-free.
5. Don't buy silver, jade, or ancient-style accessories in the ancient town. If you don't know the industry, you will 100% get scammed.
6. Be cautious about visiting Lashihai. Don't trust low-price horseback riding; they will likely add fees on the spot.
7. Lijiang's UV rays are super strong!! Whether it's sunny or cloudy, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential.
💛 Final heartfelt summary
The beauty of Lijiang is real—pure, healing, and romantic—and it's worth a trip for everyone.
But the commercial traps in Lijiang are also very real.
It's suitable for people who do their homework in advance and want a relaxed getaway.
It's not suitable for the average traveler who is unprepared, afraid of being scammed, and wants a completely effortless vacation.
Having been here once, keeping the snow mountain and the evening breeze in your memories is already fulfilling enough ✨
