They have an extensive menu, offering everything from classic breakfast items to sweet treats, making it hard to choose just one. TOAST CAFE is nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood rather than a bustling tourist district. If you take a stroll around, you'll spot street art and rows of stylish houses. It's a fun area just to walk around. There were other families dining with kids like us, as well as people enjoying a quiet cup of coffee by themselves. Everyone talks about meeting quokkas on Rottnest Island, but after spending an entire day there, I realized the island is so much more than its famous smiling residents. Just a short ferry ride from Perth, Rottnest Island feels like stepping into another world—no private cars, crystal-clear beaches, turquoise bays, quiet cycling paths, and some of the clearest ocean water I've ever seen in Australia. The moment I arrived, I understood why so many locals spend their weekends here. 🚲 Rent a Bike — It's the Best Way to Explore The island is much larger than it looks. Although you can take the Island Explorer Bus, renting a bicycle gives you complete freedom to stop whenever you discover another incredible beach or viewpoint. The roads are peaceful, the scenery changes constantly, and every few kilometers feels like a different postcard. Cycling around Rottnest became one of my favorite travel memories in Western Australia. 🌊 Beaches That Rival Tropical Islands One thing that surprised me most was how unbelievably clear the water is. Before visiting The Perth Mint, I thought it would just be another museum with gold displays behind glass. I was completely wrong. It turned out to be one of the most interactive and enjoyable attractions in Perth, making it a fantastic experience for couples, friends, and especially families with children. The first activity that caught my attention was the "What's Your Weight Worth in Gold?" display. After standing still for a few seconds, the screen calculated how much my body weight would be worth if it were pure gold based on the current gold price. It was a fun and unique experience that had everyone laughing while taking photos. Another highlight was receiving a complimentary medallion during the tour. Watching the machine stamp it in front of us made it feel much more meaningful than buying a souvenir from a gift shop. It is a simple keepsake that reminds you of the experience. The guided tour was also fascinating. We watched a live demonstration of molten gold being poured into a gold bar while learning about the history of Western Australia's famous gold rush and how The Perth Mint has been refining precious metals since 1899. Seeing gold transformed right before our eyes was something I had never experienced before. One of the biggest attractions is the world's largest gold bullion coin, weighing an incredible one tonne of 99.99% pure gold. Standing next to it really shows how massive it is, and the nearby natural gold nuggets are equally impressive. Overall, I think The Perth Mint is absolutely worth visiting. It is not just about looking at gold. It combines history, live demonstrations, interactive activities, and unique photo opportunities into one memorable experience. Although it's a small attraction, the peaceful Swan River and the iconic blue boathouse make it one of the city's most photographed landmarks. One of the most unexpected experiences near Perth wasn't a beach, a winery, or a national park. It was a tiny red train. 🇦🇺 Rottnest Island Guide | What Nobody Told Me Before Visiting If you're visiting Perth, Rottnest Island is probably already on your list. But here's what I wish I knew before going. 🚗 Parking We parked at Victoria Quay Zone 3 before taking the ferry from Fremantle B Shed. Arrive early because parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. ⛴️ Ferry 8:30 AM departure from Fremantle B Shed. Travel time is only 30 minutes. Round-trip ferry: AUD 54 per adult. 🚌 Should you buy the island bus? Yes. We purchased the Island Explorer Bus for AUD 30 and it was completely worth it. Rottnest Island is much larger than most people expect, and walking between attractions can take a very long time. The last bus leaves around 4 PM, so plan your stops carefully. 💙 Our favorite part? The beaches. The water around Rottnest Island was some of the clearest we've seen in Western Australia. Every stop felt different, from quiet bays to dramatic coastal views. 🐾 And yes, the quokkas really are everywhere. But don't spend your entire day chasing quokka photos. The island itself is the real highlight. ⚠️ Tips before visiting: · Book your ferry tickets early. · Arrive early for parking. · Buy the bus ticket if you only have one day. · Bring sunscreen and water. · Check the last bus and ferry times before exploring. 5:30 PM ferry back to Fremantle. After a full day on the island, we ended the day with dinner at Chop Chop BBQ before driving back to Perth. Rottnest isn't just about quokkas. 🇦🇺 Perth Road Trip Day 2 | Pink Lakes, Coastal Cliffs & A Sunset Like No Other If Day 1 was all about the desert, Day 2 completely surprised us with some of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Western Australia. We left our Airbnb in Wandina at 8 AM and started the day with a quick grocery stop at Woolworths Seacrest before returning to store everything in the fridge. Then the adventure officially began. 💗 Hutt Lagoon (Pink Lake) After a 1.5-hour drive, we reached Hutt Lagoon. The lookout itself is beautiful, but if you continue further down toward the toilet area, you'll discover an even larger section of the pink lake. The color changes depending on the sunlight, weather, and season, making every visit unique. Seeing an entire lake painted in shades of pink against the blue sky felt almost unreal. 🌊 Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs Next, we drove toward Kalbarri National Park. The coastline here is absolutely breathtaking. · Natural Bridge · Castle Cove · Island Rock Lookout · Pot Alley Massive cliffs, crashing waves, and endless Indian Ocean views make this one of the most underrated parts of Western Australia. Every stop is only a short drive apart, making it easy to explore several viewpoints in one afternoon. 🍝 Lunch at Finlay's Kalbarri After exploring the coast, we had lunch at Finlay's. Our favorites: · Seafood Linguine – AUD 35 · Exmouth Garlic Prawns – AUD 42 The seafood was fresh, the portions were generous, and it was the perfect break before continuing the journey. 🌄 Nature's Window & Kalbarri Skywalk These two attractions are optional depending on your schedule, but they are definitely worth visiting. Nature's Window frames the Murchison River perfectly, while the Kalbarri Skywalk offers panoramic views over the dramatic gorge landscapes. We left the area around 3 PM to make sure we could catch sunset. 🌅 Horizon Ball (The Big Marble) After another two-hour drive, we reached the famous Horizon Ball just before sunset. As the sun slowly disappeared, the giant mirrored sphere reflected the changing colors of the sky, creating one of the most magical moments of our entire trip. Sometimes the long drives in Western Australia reward you with views that photographs simply cannot capture. 🍳 Dinner: Self-cooked meal back at the Airbnb. 🚗 Driving Tip: Distances in Western Australia are much longer than they appear on the map. Plan your fuel stops carefully, leave attractions before sunset whenever possible, and enjoy the journey because the road trip itself is part of the experience.
