Pingding travel guide and discussion

Summer has finally retired, and we have arrived at that season of comfortable temperatures, perfect for easy travel. In spring, we call it "spring outings," and in autumn, it's "autumn appreciation." However, the autumn red leaves often turn red in a rather nonchalant way. Many places are flooded with tourists before the leaves even turn red. We only had half a day, so instead of joining the crowds, we decided to take a drive into the mountains, with Liulin River as our destination. It's free, the scenery is natural, and you can pick persimmons and black dates. As for red leaves, there are a few, but there are more crops, rivers, water birds, and small vegetable gardens prepared for winter. The main thing is that it's uncrowded and there are no traffic jams. We visited Liulin River in winter to see the ice waterfalls, and the scenery was quite nice. It is also one of the four major tributaries on the north bank of the Hutuo River. For reference, see the guide: Shijiazhuang free one-day light hiking trip, enjoy ice waterfalls, play in the powder snow, and watch the sunset. By now, we have basically seen what the major tributaries on the north bank look like in summer and autumn. The road along the Liulin River is about 60 kilometers long. Pingling Village, at the end of the northern section, is the fire prevention checkpoint on the way to Tuoliang every winter. Previously, when the mountain road from Wuyuezhai to Tuoliang was under construction, you could go to Tuoliang along the Liulin River. This time, due to time constraints, we only drove about a third of the way, turning back at Dong'an Village. We might try to drive the whole route if we have the chance in the future. Just as you enter the vicinity of Liulin River, there are villages where you can eat. After driving for a while, I discovered there were apple and peach orchards nearby. I am certain there were peach trees and peaches; they must have been a late-ripening variety, as they weren't ready for picking, and there were no roadside stalls. Persimmon trees are scattered throughout the river valley; some are right by the roadside, while others are on the opposite bank. If you have tools, it's easier to pick them; if not, just enjoy the view. There are also many relatives of the persimmon, the black date tree, with mini-sized persimmon shapes. They are likely grafted. They taste soft and sweet, but the aftertaste is very astringent, lingering for about four to five hours. There aren't many red leaves on this road, and we only drove a third of the way, so we don't know what the scenery is like further on. The road conditions were excellent, and there is a newly built mountain road connecting to the Tangliu Line, making the journey smooth and unobstructed. The water in the Liulin River along the road isn't very deep, but it is clearer than the Hutuo River, and there are many birds foraging in the river. I spotted some egrets, and a black bird flew away, though I'm not sure what kind of large bird it was. There are also many places where you can get down to the water to play; just park your car in a spot that doesn't obstruct traffic. If you want to see red leaves, you can check out the following scenic spots and wild mountains. Jingxing paid scenic spots: Xianlai Mountain, Jinshan Mountain, and Qingliang Mountain in the mining area. Jingxing free wild mountains: Daliyan, Xishan Cuigu, Doujiazhai, Lumingling, Longfeng Mountain, Shuxiang Manguy, Sanguan Mountain, Heishuiping, etc. Pingshan free wild mountains: Yujia Mountain, Maluonao, Zhuangwang Village, Shajiutuo, and the area around Eshi Village. You can pick any mountain peak, search for a trail map, and set off. Yangquan paid scenic spot: Hongyanling. Xingtai free scenic spot: Fozhao Mountain. Luquan Liuxiang Valley and the Western Evergreen area are also good options, and Songshuling is quite famous, though it tends to be crowded with cars and people.

If you ask me, as a local of Yangquan, which attraction I recommend most, I would put Niangziguan at the top of the list. As a signature landmark of Yangquan, Niangziguan often hosts major events and is the top choice for visitors coming to Yangquan. It not only holds the heroic story of Princess Pingyang of the Tang Dynasty but is also the birthplace of the sci-fi masterpiece "The Three-Body Problem." Niangziguan was originally called "Weize Pass." It got its current name because Princess Pingyang of the Tang Dynasty once led troops to garrison here, and her army was known as the "Niangzi Army." Many first-time visitors like to take photos at the base of the pass. You can enter along the pass, climb the gate tower, and hike the Great Wall. Climbing up offers a panoramic view of Niangziguan, which I highly recommend. (It is free to climb after 6:00 PM.) The most attractive feature of Niangziguan is its reputation as the "Little Jiangnan of the North." The "Water Homes" are also a must-visit spot in Niangziguan. Water flows here all year round, and every household washes dishes and clothes directly in the river channel at their doorstep. The constant flow of water washes away stains, a rare sight in the northern region. If the pass represents history and the Water Homes represent comfort, then the Niangziguan Waterfall represents the incredible craftsmanship of nature. If you visit the waterfall scenic area in summer, you will clearly feel the power of the cascading water. The immersive cultural play "Meeting Niangziguan" is also a project that the Niangziguan scenic area has been heavily promoting in recent years. I personally felt it was quite good after watching it, but the ticket price is a bit high. For those interested in the specific content, you can come and buy tickets on-site to see it; I will not spoil it for you. Besides what I mentioned above, you can also go rafting, take a boat on Pingyang Lake, eat local specialty pressed pancakes, and taste the full-fish feast, soy sauce and vinegar tilapia, deep-fried sturgeon, and more—these are for you to discover. Personally, as a loyal fan of "The Three-Body Problem," I felt closer to the story when I realized Liu Cixin wrote the book here. "Three-Body" fans from all over the country come to pay homage to this magical place. There is a "Three-Body" mural wall next to the Niangziguan Power Plant, which is a great spot for photos. The Niangziguan scenic area is not large, and one day is enough for a visit. This is a scenic spot with no age limitations; seniors, middle-aged people, youth, and children can all find something fun for themselves at Niangziguan. If you haven't been to Niangziguan yet, find some time to plan a trip now; it will definitely be worth the visit. After exploring Niangziguan, if you still have enough time, do not head home yet, because 13 km away from the scenic area lies the Guguan Great Wall, a stone-built inner Great Wall that predates the Great Wall of Qin Shi Huang by 155 years. The Guguan Great Wall is one of the four famous passes west of the capital during the Ming Dynasty; the other three are Juyong Pass, Zijing Pass, and Daoma Pass, serving as the "shield of the capital." Due to its historical value and architectural features, the Guguan Great Wall is called "having the charm of a mini Badaling" by the famous Great Wall expert Luo Zhewen. Most of the current Great Wall consists of Ming Dynasty ruins. In 1998, the local government actively participated in restoration work, allowing this ancient structure to regain its former glory. The Guguan Great Wall scenic area is not large, and transportation is not very convenient, so I recommend driving here. There is a Great Wall ruins exhibition hall, and there is a temple on the hilltop, which was also funded and built by local residents later on. Interested friends are welcome to come and take a look.

The end of October and November are arguably the times when workers need a breather the most. The hustle and bustle of the city, endless overtime, and constant messages really make you want to hit the pause button ⏸️. Instead of sleeping until you get a headache at home or squeezing into crowds at viral tourist spots, why not find a nearby place and give time back to yourself? No need for complicated planning; just drive about 1 hour from the city to visit these towns and ancient villages around Yangquan where you can truly "chill." There are no KPIs here, just the slowing wind and leaves gradually turning yellow 🍁. 📍 Stop 1: Niangziguan Town (Pingding County) — Listen to the water, see the Great Wall This place has a gentleness rarely seen in the north. The whole town is accompanied by the sound of babbling water, and the autumn breeze at the end of October feels especially comfortable. 🍜 Food recommendations: Must-try local specialty: crispy pressed cakes (ya-bing), super satisfying! For lunch, find a farmhouse restaurant and order a bowl of he-lao noodles topped with rich tomato meat sauce, paired with a plate of stir-fried prickly ash leaves—it's amazing 🥘. 📸 Photo spots: The stone village by the water and the area by the waterfall. Wear a trench coat or traditional-style clothing for great photos. 🏡 Accommodation tips: There are many homestays by the water. Fall asleep to the sound of water and wake up to birds chirping—total healing. 🚗 Route planning: Drive from the city and navigate directly to Niangziguan. Road conditions are good. Park upon arrival and explore on foot. ⚠️ Tips: Be wary of street vendors selling local specialties; buy at your own discretion. If you see a private courtyard with a sign saying "fee for taking photos," ask about the price before entering. 🍂 📍 Stop 2: Dachang Ancient Village (Yu County) — The "Potala Palace" hidden in the deep mountains A place that truly calms the mind. The whole village is built on stone, ancient and mysterious. Visiting in November, the autumn colors across the mountains set off the yellow-earth stone houses, creating a deeply moving sense of history. 🍜 Food recommendations: Must try the farmhouse "big pot stew" (da-guo-cai) and authentic oat noodles (kaolaolao). One hot bite will warm your stomach. 📸 Photo spots: The big rock at the village entrance, the layered stone steps, and the rooftops at dusk—the light and shadow are beautiful. 🏡 Accommodation tips: For stargazing and morning mist, stay in a village farmhouse. If traveling with elderly or children, it's recommended to return to Yu County for a chain hotel with better facilities. 🚗 Route planning: Drive there. The last stretch has some mountain roads, so experienced drivers are recommended. There's some walking after parking, so wear comfortable shoes. ⚠️ Tips: Temperatures in the mountains are much lower than in the city. Bring a thick jacket if visiting late October/early November. Few convenience stores in the village; bring your own water, snacks, and some small change. 🍂 📍 Stop 3: Xiaohe Ancient Village (Suburban District) — Republic of China style and artistic vibe Very close to the city, perfect for lazy people who don't want to drive too long. This is the hometown of the Republic of China-era talented woman Shi Pingmei. With blue bricks and grey tiles, it has the gentle illusion of a Jiangnan water town. 🍜 Food recommendations: When tired of walking, find a courtyard for an authentic farmhouse meal. Hu-du porridge with shredded potatoes, plus some freshly fried oil cakes—so comfortable. 📸 Photo spots: Near Shi Pingmei's former residence, the corridors of the Shi Family Garden, and the mossy stone steps—perfect for artistic, vintage-style photos. 🏡 Accommodation tips: Since it's close to the city, staying overnight isn't strictly necessary, but there are some stylish homestays if you want to experience the slow life. 🚗 Route planning: Accessible by car or bus, great for a family outing on a weekend afternoon. ⚠️ Tips: Some alleys are narrow; watch your step on rainy days. The light is best around 4:00–5:00 PM, so focus your photo-taking then. 🍂 📍 Stop 4: Guguan (Pingding County) — Feel the vicissitudes of history The autumn breeze at the end of October blows across the ancient Great Wall, with golden and fiery red colors covering the mountains. Walking here, all your worries disappear. 🍜 Food recommendations: Farmhouse meals in the town or nearby. Must-order: Pingding specialty stir-fried dried cucumber with meat, and a steaming clay pot dish—you'll feel warm all over after eating. 📸 Photo spots: The ancient Great Wall path, the distant beacon tower, and the ancient city walls at sunset—great for grand, atmospheric shots. 🏡 Accommodation tips: Return to Pingding County for accommodation; more options and convenient. You can even grab a late-night snack in the county. 🚗 Route planning: Drive directly to the scenic area, park, and hike a bit to enjoy the crisp autumn air. ⚠️ Tips: Some parts of the Great Wall are steep; bring a hiking stick. Also, it's windy in autumn, so have a hat and sunglasses ready—they're good for photos and wind protection. 🍂 A few tips for those wanting to "escape": Combine these routes based on your stamina. For a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip, visit Niangziguan or Guguan on the first day, and Dachang or Xiaohe on the second. For accommodation, don't just trust online photos; ask the elderly people sunning themselves at the village entrance—they often give the best directions. When dining, avoid places with huge signs right at the scenic area entrance. Walk a bit further into the village alleys; the small eateries locals eat at are usually the best. November has big temperature differences in the mountains; don't forget a thick jacket. Don't catch a cold for the sake of looking cool 🤧. No need for detailed plans. Sometimes, just going wherever you feel like is true relaxation. It's the weekend, pack a few clothes, drive off, and go to these small places around Yangquan to waste time in beautiful scenery 🚗💨.

(Clickbait warning!!! It's actually a reverse recommendation!) You guys! Shanxi's Yangquan is perfect for a short getaway! It's just a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Taiyuan. It has majestic Taihang Mountain passes, the loyal story of the Orphan of Zhao, red history, ancient architecture, and beautiful landscapes. It's uncrowded and the perfect choice for a weekend escape from the city 🥰 ✅ Best time to visit 🌟 April–May: Spring flowers are in bloom, and the Taihang Mountains are fresh. September–October: Crisp autumn air, colorful foliage, and perfect for photos. Summer: The mountains are cool and great for escaping the heat. Winter: It gets cold, making it better for visiting ancient architecture and the city center. 📌 Must-visit attractions ▫️ Niangziguan Pass | The Ninth Pass Under Heaven 🔥 A majestic water pass on the Great Wall! This is where Princess Pingyang was stationed. On one side is the rugged Great Wall, and on the other are waterfalls, streams, and water-side homes. Climb the gate tower to overlook the Taihang Mountains, watch the waterfalls cascade down, and enjoy the stunning scenery. Liu Cixin, the author of The Three-Body Problem, once worked here. ▫️ Cangshan Mountain | The Mountain of Loyalty The sacred site where the Orphan of Zhao was hidden! Features cliffside ancient temples, the Hidden Orphan Cave, and the Temple of Loyalty. The mountains are filled with rugged rocks, offering an immersive experience of thousand-year-old loyalty culture. The forests are serene and perfect for a relaxing hike. ▫️ Shinaoshan Mountain Hundred Regiments Offensive Memorial Hall Free admission! Climb the Great Wall, see the Water Curtain Cave waterfall, explore the water-side homes, and take a boat ride on Pingyang Lake to enjoy the scenery Lunch: Pingding clay pot feast near the scenic area Afternoon: If time permits, stop by Guanshan Academy on the way back 🍜 Food list ✅ Guoyourou (originated in Pingding, rich in vinegar aroma), mingedou, minqu, Pingding clay pot, zaojie cake, and Yangquan yaping (pressed cake). A carb lover's dream. 💡 Tips 1. Niangziguan Pass and Cangshan Mountain are far from the city center, so driving is the best way to get around. 2. There are many stairs in the mountains, so wear comfortable sneakers. 3. The memorial hall is closed on Mondays, so check the schedule before you go.

1⃣️ Beishan Park Full of European vibes, with European-style gates and statues. You can overlook the entire city from the high ground. It's just that the park area is a bit smaller than expected. 🥰 2⃣️ Yangquan Memory 1947 Renovated from an old factory area, it restores nostalgic scenes from the industrial construction era. There is a food street in the park with many dining options. It's great for photos, and parking and dining are very convenient. 3⃣️ Aluminum Factory A bit "catfished" by photos online! I originally thought it was a large abandoned factory area, but it's actually just an old, abandoned dormitory area. There are a lot of weeds and quite a few mosquitoes, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent if you go~ 4⃣️ Xiaohe Ancient Village | The biggest surprise of today's trip 🎋 It's right near the Aluminum Factory and highly recommended! The village is clean and tidy, with free admission and free parking. Most of the houses are built of stone, simple and quiet. The village is home to the Guandi Temple and Guanyin Temple, as well as the former residence of Shi Pingmei (Shi Pingmei is buried in Taoranting Park in Beijing). Homestays and cafes have opened in the village, making it perfect for a slow-paced short stay. You can see elderly people cooling off everywhere, feeling leisurely and comfortable, with a gentle atmosphere of "water in every home, flowers in every household." 🍢 Food Highlights I tried Ritan Fried Skewers. The way of eating is very similar to Taiyuan sauce skewers, and it's great value. Various vegetables are coated in batter, fried, and then drizzled with sauce. The local instant noodles are super thin, which is completely different from the texture of meat-floss noodles. The local soda, Weierkang, is orange-flavored. The taste is quite common, typical of the local sodas found everywhere.

So close, so beautiful, head to Hebei for the weekend! Starting from Tianjin 📍 about a 3-hour drive 🚗, a spontaneous road trip begins~ Stop 1 🚏 Rongguo Mansion Filming location for Dream of the Red Chamber 🎬. Although the garden isn't large and lacks historical relics, every room you enter sparks curiosity about Dream of the Red Chamber. After all, it's the most difficult of the "Four Great Classical Novels" to understand! 📖 You can also visit Zhengding Ancient City on the way; it's even a table tennis training base. Stop 2 📍 Around Nangang Reservoir Xibaipo → Xinghuo Courtyard → Nangang Reservoir Pier → Cao Xinghuo Memorial Hall ("Without the Communist Party, There Would Be No New China" 🎵) Nangang Reservoir is just so beautiful! You can take a boat 🚤, go fishing 🎣, and enjoy the scenery 🌇. It's truly a perfect place for a weekend getaway~ Stop 3 📍 Niangziguan Pass → Tianchang Ancient City → Yujia Stone Village Once we arrived at Stone Village, we realized it was better suited for younger travelers, so we decided to move on! We chose the cable car up 🚡 and walked down 🚶‍♀️—perfect! This is also a filming location for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 🎬. A temple spans across 2 mountains—spectacular! The mountain is home to various deities, both famous and obscure 🙏. Stop 5 📍 Deming Ancient Town A modern town modeled after those in the Jiangnan region, a great place for a post-meal stroll! There are bonfire parties 🔥 and molten iron flower performances ✨. What makes it unique is that it's located in a health resort: a wellness center, a children's playground, and the Aloha Hotel are all here! It's known as the "Little Sanya of Shijiazhuang." Although there's no sea, the vegetation is lush, so take a deep breath 🫁. Stop 6 📍 Qin Emperor's Ancient Post Road We walked on the stone road pressed by the ruts of the First Emperor of Qin's carriages and saw the platform where the coffin was placed. Walking from the past to the present, it felt like traveling back over 2,000 years in an instant! These 2 deep ruts are important physical evidence of "standardizing writing and carriage gauges" 🏛️. 📝 Tips: We originally planned to visit Baodu Mountain for our 7th stop, but there's no cable car, so considering the physical condition of our companions, we decided to skip it and head back to Tianjin~ The whole trip took 4 days: left on Thursday, home on Sunday! If you have plenty of time and haven't visited these spots before, I suggest setting aside a week~

If you don't want to squeeze into popular tourist spots in October, head to these lesser-known small cities. These cities are budget-friendly, and their scenery is just as impressive as the viral hotspots. ⛰️ Yangquan ✨ Trip highlights: Niangziguan Pass is steep and impressive, the story of Zangshan Mountain (where the orphan of Zhao was hidden) is rich in history, and the stone houses in Daping Ancient Village are very primitive. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Niangziguan Pass → Guguan Great Wall; Day 2: Zangshan Mountain → Daping Ancient Village; Day 3: Explore the surroundings → Return. 🍜 Food recommendations: Pingding Guo You Rou (stir-fried pork), Minqu (noodles), and Zaojie Gao (jujube cake)—savory, sweet, and chewy. ⚠️ Travel tips: The Great Wall steps are gentle, not steep. Bring a jacket for the cool cave, and drive slowly on mountain roads. Most scenic spots are free or half-price, so it won't cost much. 💧 Lichuan ✨ Trip highlights: Tenglong Cave is a massive, stunning cavern, the Dajing Ancient Architectural Complex is rustic and charming, and watching the sea of clouds and sunset at Sumadang is very healing. 🗺️ Itinerary: Day 1: Tenglong Cave → Longchuan Water Town; Day 2: Dajing → Sumadang; Day 3: Explore the surroundings → Return. 🍜 Food recommendations: Lichuan water shield, Genba jelly, and Tujia Hezha (soybean stew)—refreshing and appetizing. ⚠️ Travel tips: The temperature inside the cave is low, so bring a jacket. Sumadang is at a high altitude, so take it easy. The mountain roads are winding, so drive slowly. Choose a small hotel in the old town for accommodation; it's clean and cheap.

It took less than an hour to drive from Shijiazhuang to the foot of Niangziguan. As you walk along the river valley, you can hear the muffled sound of water crashing against the rock walls from afar. Up close, this waterfall nestled in the mountain hollow is far more vibrant than the photos online. There’s no noisy, over-commercialized atmosphere—just mountain breezes carrying water vapor that can cut the summer heat in half. I’ve put together a practical guide, so save this if you’re planning a visit! ✨ Best time to visit Niangziguan Waterfall is located in a river valley within the Taihang Mountains. The drop is significant, and the water flow is heavily influenced by rainfall. Late summer and early autumn see abundant rainfall, stable water flow, and lush vegetation, making for a comfortable visit. Spring is great for seeing wild peach blossoms along the valley, and the mild temperatures are perfect for hiking. In winter, some rock walls form ice waterfalls, offering a unique landscape. Try to avoid visiting at noon, as there isn't much shade in the valley and it can get quite sunny. Morning or evening visits are more comfortable. Must-visit spots 🔹 Main waterfall: The waterfall cascades down layers of rock walls into a deep pool below, surrounded by green, mossy cliffs. Follow the trail to the edge of the pool to feel the mist up close—it’s perfect for photos. If you visit during the wet season, the layering of the water against the rocks is even more impressive. 🔹 Water Curtain Cave: Follow the side trail to enter the natural cave behind the waterfall. Looking out from inside, the waterfall appears as a translucent curtain hanging over the entrance. The breeze carries the mist inside, making it cool and refreshing. The cave itself is also geologically interesting. 🔹 River valley trail: The trail from the entrance to the waterfall follows the stream, lined with native trees and rocks. You might even spot laundry stones left by local villagers along the bank. It’s a relaxing walk, perfect for stopping to take photos of the mountain scenery. Local specialties Because it’s near eastern Shanxi, the local cuisine blends Jin cuisine with Taihang Mountain flavors, focusing on noodles and rustic farm-style dishes. Try the local "Ya Bing" (pressed cake)—it’s thin, crispy, and fragrant with sesame, making it an easy snack to carry. "Min Ge Dou" is a common local noodle dish that’s chewy and smooth, served with a savory sauce that’s very appetizing. The mountain free-range chicken stewed with mushrooms is rich and flavorful, made with local ingredients. Seasonal wild vegetables, whether stir-fried or served cold, are refreshing and perfect for a meal after a long walk. Practical tips 💡 The trail from the entrance to the waterfall has some inclines, so wear comfortable flat shoes or hiking shoes. Avoid high heels, as they can be slippery. 💡 Do not enter the deep pool to play in the water. The bottom is uneven, the water is cold, and it can be dangerous. It’s best to just enjoy the view and take photos from the shore. 💡 Sometimes, people along the road may offer "cheap" entry to the scenic area. We recommend using official ticketing channels to avoid any unnecessary issues. 💡 If visiting on a sunny day, remember to bring sunscreen and water. While the valley is cooler than the city, you’ll still need hydration during a long hike. If it has rained, bring a portable raincoat, as water may drip from the rock walls. 💡 There aren't many commercial shops around the waterfall, so prepare any snacks and drinking water you might need in advance. Suggested itinerary We recommend entering through the main gate of the Niangziguan Scenic Area and slowly walking along the river valley trail toward the waterfall. You can stop along the way to enjoy the stream and mountain scenery. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the waterfall viewing area. Spend some time taking photos by the pool, then take the side trail into the Water Curtain Cave. The entire round trip takes about 1.5–2 hours. If you have extra time, you can also visit the nearby pass city ruins. A half-day trip is plenty and won't feel rushed. Kaihe Temple grottoes are located in Luanliu village on the north bank of the Tao River, east of Yangquan. The name Luanliu probably comes from the Tao River's former wildness. Seen from near or far, the jagged stone peaks stretch on, yet here a single rock rises alone and proudly, forming a scenic view that suits the temple's secluded, reclusive siting. Facing south and built into the cliff, Kaihe Temple is cleverly divided into upper and lower courtyards. The lower courtyard is the core area for the grotto sculptures. Following the rising terrain upward step by step leads to the upper temple, whose main building is the Mahavira hall. This layout follows the mountain's form and creates a spatial progression from the secular world toward the Buddhist realm. The lower courtyard's Wei-Qi three caves are the heart of the whole complex. In 510 CE, the third year of Yongping in the Northern Wei, the first carving was made on the previously silent cliff of the Taihang Mountains. From then on, craftsmen from three dynasties, over more than 70 years, carved three main caves, eight subsidiary niches, and a group of cliff sculptures, leaving 18 inscriptions (or more than 30 entries) that together form a stone-engraved chronological history of Buddhist art. Today there remain 2 large Buddha statues and 87 small Buddhas; the largest is 4.4m tall and the smallest is only 0.12m. The Buddha robes show the Southern dynasties pao yi bo dai style, and the sculptural style and expressions closely resemble the Buddha images at the Yungang grottoes in Datong, so it is known as the small Yungang of Shanxi. The dated inscriptions from the fifth year of Wuding of Eastern Wei to the second year of Heqing of Northern Qi clearly record the evolution of Northern dynasty sculptural styles, making Kaihe Temple an important living fossil for studying the development of Chinese Buddhist art. Unlike the imperial atmosphere of Yungang, Kaihe Temple's sculptures have a more popular, folk quality. The robust bodies, billowing robes, and full faces display an aesthetic that mixes the Xianbei people's roughness with vitality. Among them, the cliff-carved great Buddha carved during the Tianbao years of Northern Qi, with downcast eyes and drapery like flowing clouds, is praised by scholars as the popular peak of Northern dynasty sculptural aesthetics. Unfortunately, all the cave sculptures and statues are either weathered or damaged beyond recognition, without a single exception, a truly heartbreaking sight.

✅ Pros of autumn travel in Yangquan 1. The Taihang red leaves are beautiful, and there are very few tourists. Hongyanling and Cuifeng Mountain offer stunning autumn foliage and are lesser-known spots, so you can avoid the crowds, take photos in peace, and enjoy a great experience. Many mountain spots are free. 2. High cost-performance. Local food and accommodation are affordable, and there are many free parks and ancient villages. The overall travel cost is low, making it perfect for off-the-beaten-path travel. 3. Convenient location. Situated between Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang, it is accessible by high-speed rail. You can combine visits to Niangziguan, Cangshan, and Guanshan to see landscapes, ancient villages, and red culture all in one trip. 4. The autumn air is dry, there are many sunny days, and visibility is high. It is perfect for hiking and climbing to enjoy the views. 5. The mountain city has a strong local vibe. With a mix of old mining areas and ancient villages, it offers a unique sense of industrial nostalgia that differs from other ancient cities in Shanxi. ❌ Cons of autumn travel in Yangquan 1. The temperature difference between day and night is huge. It is warm during the day, but very cold in the mountains in the early morning and evening. It is windy in the mountains, temperatures drop quickly, and it is easy to catch a cold. 2. Attractions are scattered. Most red leaf scenic areas are in the mountains of Pingding and the suburbs, far from each other. Public transport is inconvenient, so self-driving or carpooling is better. Inter-county bus services are infrequent, and waiting times are long. 3. The red leaves are unstable due to weather. The best time to view them changes every year; early cooling leads to faster leaf drop, so going too early or too late might mean missing the best scenery. There is occasional autumn rain in the mountains, making mountain roads slippery. 4. The high-speed rail station is remote. Yangquan North Station is in Yuxian, 40 km from the city center. You need to take extra transport to get to the city, which is a hassle. 5. Facilities in mountain scenic areas are average. There are few kiosks in the mountains, and food options are limited. Some wild trails have old steps, so be careful when hiking. 🧥 Clothing The autumn climate is dry and windy, so layering is key. · Daytime: Long-sleeve T-shirts and thin sweatshirts. You will sweat easily while hiking. · Morning/Evening/Mountains: A windbreaker or hardshell jacket is essential. In late autumn, a light down jacket is recommended. It is 4–6 °C cooler in the mountains than in the city. · Accessories: Hat, lip balm, and moisturizer. The UV rays are still strong, so bring sunscreen. · Shoes: Non-slip, durable sneakers. Hiking and walking on ancient village stone paths is tough on the feet, so do not wear high heels. · Carry a folding umbrella, as sudden light rain is common in the mountains. 🍜 Food Yangquan features local Jindong flavors, mainly coarse grains and pasta. Specialties: Pingding oil-fried meat, minqu noodles, stir-fried potato/flour dish, hudu porridge, Yangquan flatbread, jujube cake, and Pingding clay pot. ✅ Recommended: Old streets in the city center and small eateries frequented by locals. The cost is 20–40 yuan per person, and the taste is authentic. ⚠️ Pitfalls: Farmhouses in scenic areas are pricey with limited food options. For souvenirs like flatbread and sour jujube products, it is more cost-effective to buy them at supermarkets in the city. Bring your own water and snacks when heading into the mountains. 🏨 Accommodation 1. First choice: Binhe/Xinglong Street business district in downtown Yangquan. There are many chain hotels, and it is convenient for dining and hailing rides. Carpooling to various attractions is also easy. Budget: 120–260 yuan/night. 2. Pingding County: Stay here if you are specifically visiting Hongyanling and Niangziguan. It is closer to the southern scenic areas and cheaper, though there are fewer dining options at night. Tip: There are few homestays in mountain scenic areas, and facilities are average. Rooms are in high demand on weekends, so booking in advance is recommended. 🚗 Transport · In the city: Buses and ride-hailing services are convenient, and the city is not large. · Suburban red leaf scenic areas: Self-driving is highly recommended. You can stop to enjoy the view along the Taihang No. 1 Highway at any time. Public buses are infrequent, and waiting times are long. · High-speed rail: Yangquan North Station (Yuxian). There are buses directly to the city center for a dozen yuan, taking about 40 mins. Taking a taxi directly is expensive. · Tip: There are many curves in the mountains, so drive carefully in the rain. Try to enter the mountains in the morning, as temperatures drop quickly in the evening.

Niangzi Pass is located 45 km northeast of Pingding County, Shanxi Province, in the middle section of the Taihang Mountains, on the border between Shanxi and Hebei provinces. It faces Jingxing County, Hebei Province, to the east and guards Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, to the west, serving as a vital throat-like passage connecting the North China Plain with the Shanxi Plateau. The pass is built against the mountains and by the water, surrounded by the Tao River, forming a natural barrier where "two mountains stand on either side with a river flowing through the middle." It has been a strategic military location since ancient times. Ancients described it as "overlooking Yan and Ji to the east, and peering into the three Jins to the west." Controlling this pass meant controlling the thoroughfare between Shanxi and Hebei, earning it the reputation as the "shield of the capital region." Formerly known as "Weize Pass," this majestic pass spanning the Taihang Mountains is both a witness to history's battles and a natural landscape painting where mountains and water blend. Looking out along the winding Great Wall, Niangzi Pass is built against the cliffs, standing tall and imposing. As a place name, "Niangzi Pass" was initially just a folk nickname. Yuan Haowen, a Jin Dynasty writer whose ancestral home was Pingding, wrote in his poem "Visiting Chengtian Hanging Spring": "I only knew the west of Jinyang City was rare in the world, but Niangzi Pass is even more magnificent," indicating that the name "Niangzi Pass" was already in use among the people 800 years ago. It was not until the 29th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1765) that it was officially recognized as an administrative name and included in the official document of that time, the "Comprehensive Geography of the Great Qing." Thus, it seems that after being used as a folk name for at least 500 years, Niangzi Pass finally shed its "nickname" status, officially replaced "Weize" with dignity, and became the formal name for both the pass and the administrative region. So, which "lady" in history left behind such scenery and such a beautiful, meaningful reverie for future generations? There is no consensus in academia. The local legend passed down through generations is that in the early Tang Dynasty, Princess Pingyang, daughter of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Li Yuan, once led an army of women to defend this area and achieved great military success. To commemorate her, later generations renamed the pass Niangzi Pass. The Ming Dynasty's "Yongle Encyclopedia" records: "Chengtian Town, located 90 li northeast of Pingding Prefecture, is home to the ancient Jealous Woman Shrine, hence it is commonly called Niangzi Pass." The late Ming geographer Gu Zuyu wrote in "Essentials of Historical Geography": "Weize Pass is the Tang Dynasty's Chengtian Army, commonly known as Niangzi Pass, named after the Jealous Woman Shrine." The Qing Dynasty's "Shanxi Provincial Gazetteer" (Guangxu reign) records: "Weize Pass is also known as Niangzi Pass, named after the Jealous Woman Shrine." Therefore, academia tends to favor the theory that the name Niangzi Pass originated from the Jealous Woman. The Jealous Woman takes us back to the Spring and Autumn period. After enduring many hardships, Prince Chong'er of Jin became Duke Wen of Jin. When he ascended the throne and rewarded his subjects, he forgot Jie Zitui, who had "cut his own flesh to feed his lord." Jie retired to Mian Mountain. Duke Wen, feeling deep regret, tried to force Jie out by setting fire to the mountain, but Jie refused to leave and was accidentally burned to death. Remembering his loyalty, Duke Wen designated the anniversary of Jie's death as the "Cold Food Festival" and ordered that no fires be lit across the country on that day. Jie Zitui's sister, Jie Shanshi (known as the Jealous Woman), was ashamed that her brother had sought fame and harmed the people. She indignantly traveled east to Zijin Mountain (later Niangzi Pass). To abolish the vulgar custom of the Cold Food Festival and relieve the people's suffering, she resolved to openly defy the "no fire" order by "burning firewood." Undeterred by hardship, she went up the mountain to chop wood every day from the winter solstice until the following Qingming Festival (Cold Food Festival), when she resolutely piled the wood and burned herself. This shocking act was deeply praised by the people. "One hundred days of chopping wood, one day of burning"—people never forgot this event and passed it down by word of mouth. To honor the Jealous Woman's integrity and kindness, later generations built a temple for her by the Hanging Spring, called the Jealous Woman Shrine, commonly known as the "Niangzi Temple." Through this common usage, Niangzi Pass got its name. The construction date of the Jealous Woman Shrine is unknown. Based on the "Ode to the Jealous Goddess" stele erected in the 13th year of the Dali reign of the Tang Dynasty (779 AD), the shrine must have been built at or before that time. The "Ode to the Jealous Goddess" stele is now in the Shanxi Museum, inscribed with an ode written by Li Yin (whose background is unknown) elevating the Jealous Woman to a goddess. Unlike the vast Great Wall on the Loess Plateau that most people imagine, the greatest feature of Niangzi Pass is "water." The Mian River flows through the pass, its water crystal clear and never freezing year-round. With the Mian Mountain range at its back and the rushing Mian River in front, the unique spectacle of "water flooding the pass city, boats mooring at the battlements" is one of a kind in the country. The existing pass city of Niangzi Pass was rebuilt in the 20th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1541). The walls, built of bluestone, still emit a cold, hard, dim light. Standing on the pass city and looking out over the railing, one can see the Great Wall undulating along the Mian Mountain to the southeast, leading to watchtowers, with the ancient Yan-Zhao road outside the pass. The watchtowers overlook the Mian River valley and the main traffic routes, while to the west are cliffs, with the Mian River flowing endlessly at the bottom. The dangerous mountains, river valleys, and the Great Wall have built a natural barrier between Shanxi and Hebei, creating the inherent advantage of Niangzi Pass being easy to defend and difficult to attack. As the ancients said, "The majestic pass is as solid as iron," and the rugged terrain of Niangzi Pass is the best reflection of this line. Beyond its military value, the natural scenery of Niangzi Pass is breathtaking. Both banks of the Tao River are lush and green, with waterfalls cascading down and mist filling the air. The waterfall, with a drop of over 30 meters, rushes down with a sound like thunder and is known as the "Number One Waterfall in the North." This waterfall has another name, "Hanging Spring," and its water source comes from an underground river, never drying up in any season and never freezing in winter, making it a wonder. Niangzi Pass also carries rich cultural memories. Scholars and poets throughout history have passed through here, leaving behind many poems. The Ming Dynasty poet Yu Qian once wrote the lines, "A hundred-foot tower spans the Great Wall, the battlements are high in autumn, the air is crisp and clear," vividly depicting the majestic momentum of this place. The famous modern poet Guo Moruo also wrote in his poem "Passing Niangzi Pass": "A waterfall hangs at Niangzi Pass, flying into the valley like a hidden dragon." History gave Niangzi Pass its soul, while the mountains and water gave it flesh and blood. The beauty here is a perfect combination of strength and gentleness—the rugged mountains and the gentle water scenery complement each other, forming a natural painting of motion and stillness. A majestic pass and ancient gateway, witnessing a thousand years of vicissitudes. The Mian River, flowing beneath Niangzi Pass, witnessed the military miracle of Han Xin's "battle with his back to the river" over two thousand years ago, where he fought for survival, and also witnessed the heroic feat of the "Bloody Battle of Mohetan" during the Hundred Regiments Offensive.

The observation deck halfway up is stunning enough for photos. 3. Beishan Park: Visiting during the day is free. The sci-fi night event is seasonal and not open year-round. If you want to go for a night tour, be sure to check the schedule in advance so you do not have a wasted trip. 4. For outdoor activities, use sun protection and bring mosquito repellent. There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, so carry a light jacket. 5. Local dishes tend to be salty; tell the owner to use less salt when ordering. 6. Parking at Niangziguan is tight during holidays. It is recommended to leave early in the morning to avoid peak crowds. 7. Strollers: Niangziguan Great Wall has many steps; strollers are only suitable for the flat areas of Pingyang Lake and the Water Households. Mornings like these are just so refreshing. 🏊‍♂️ Fun times by the pool 💦 Beyond the cozy room, the homestay's outdoor facilities were equally impressive. The crystal-clear pool, in particular, became a paradise for the kids. On summer afternoons, they would splash around, their laughter filling the air. I enjoyed the tranquility from the sidelines, watching them have so much fun, which warmed my heart. There’s also a lounge area by the pool where you can soak up the sun and enjoy a cup of coffee—so relaxing. 🌿 Exploring the surrounding nature 🌱 There are plenty of places worth exploring around the homestay. The nearby Yujia Stone Village and Daliangjiang Ancient Village have preserved many ancient buildings and cultural relics, making them perfect for a family outing. We also visited the nearby Jingnan Station and Niangziguan Station to experience the rustic railway charm. Every excursion was a wonderful bonding experience, and the kids learned so much and gained so much from it. This trip not only allowed us to experience the beauty of nature but also reminded me of the warmth of family. Hongtuling Shanxingju Eco-Homestay is truly a hidden gem where the whole family can relax and enjoy quality time together. If you’re looking for a family-friendly getaway, this place is highly recommended!

If you're wondering which place in Shanxi is the most underrated, Yangquan definitely makes the list. Tucked away in the Taohua River Valley on the western foothills of the Taihang Mountains, this small city is surrounded by mountains, with its urban area squeezed into a narrow riverbank. Don't let its size fool you; it is officially the "First City Created by the CPC"—founded in 1947, it was the first people's city established by the Communist Party of China. Even better, it features a majestic pass of the Great Wall, a 2,600-year-old story of loyalty, and a bowl of Piao Min Qu noodles that locals can't get enough of. Fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and affordability are the keywords for Yangquan. I. Must-visit attractions: Majestic passes and loyalty Niangziguan | The Ninth Pass of the Great Wall "If you haven't been to Niangziguan, you haven't really been to Yangquan." Known as the "Ninth Pass of the World," the pass city is built against the mountains, with ancient fortresses on the cliffs that are truly imposing. Princess Pingyang of the Tang Dynasty once stationed her "Women's Army" here, which is how the pass got its name. The four core areas—the pass city, the waterfall, Pingyang Lake, and the water-dwelling homes—each have their own charm. Climb the pass to see the winding Great Wall, walk through the waterfall (a 40-meter drop with roaring water), and take a boat on Pingyang Lake to admire the "Great Wall on the Water." There's also a fun fact: Liu Cixin worked at the Niangziguan Power Plant when he wrote The Three-Body Problem. Standing on the pass in the mountain breeze, you might just catch some sci-fi inspiration. Tickets: 58 yuan (273 yuan for a combined ticket with the performance). Recommended visit: 3 hours Cangshan | The sacred mountain of loyalty for the Orphan of Zhao Formerly known as Yushan, this is the birthplace of the "Orphan of Zhao" story. During the Spring and Autumn period, Cheng Ying hid the Orphan of Zhao here for 15 years. Later generations built a shrine to commemorate this, and it has a history of over 2,600 years. The core culture of the Cangshan scenic area, the "Legend of the Orphan of Zhao," is a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The mountain is dotted with relics like the Orphan-Hiding Cave, the Horse-Drinking Pool, and the Gratitude Shrine, with Ming Dynasty murals that remain vivid today. With its towering peaks and ancient temples, the area offers both natural beauty and cultural depth, perfect for hiking and exploring history. Tickets: 80 yuan (50 yuan in the off-season). Recommended visit: 3 hours Other places worth visiting The Lion Brain Mountain (Shinaoshan) Hundred Regiments Offensive site is a must-visit for red tourism; the monument stands like a bayonet piercing the sky, and you can overlook the entire city from the top (free admission). Da'an Ancient Village is known as the "Little Potala Palace in the depths of the Taihang Mountains," with rows of yellow clay and stone houses built into the mountain—simple and tranquil. The Yangquan Museum is free to enter; its prized exhibit is a Warring States bronze sword, sharp and bright as new, known as the "First Sword of Eastern Jin." Cuifeng Mountain has a forest coverage rate of over 97%, making it a true natural oxygen bar, with stunning red leaves in autumn. II. Must-eat food: The joy of carbs The core of Yangquan cuisine can be summed up in two words: carbs. Forget about dieting before you arrive. Piao Min Qu | The breakfast faith of locals Piao Min Qu is Yangquan's most unique noodle dish, popular since the Ming Dynasty, also called "Xiao He Lao" by locals. The preparation is interesting: mung bean flour is mixed with a small amount of wheat flour in an 8:2 ratio, stirred with cold water, and pressed into boiling water using a special mold. The noodles float immediately, coming out clean, refreshing, and separate. They are thin as powder, served in a fresh broth, and topped with green onions, cilantro, and aged vinegar. A bowl warms you up and is the perfect start to a Yangquan day. It's affordable, too—you can get an authentic bowl for 8 to 15 yuan. Yangquan Ya Bing | Thin as paper, crunchy "Golden cake, thin as paper, crumbles in the mouth, crunchy"—that's Ya Bing. Its history dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Legend has it that when Princess Pingyang was stationed at Niangziguan, villagers used spring water to make batter and baked it into cakes to support the army; later, it became travel rations. During the Hundred Regiments Offensive, Yangquan residents also baked large quantities of Ya Bing to support the front lines. Originating in Niangziguan Village, Niangziguan Town, Pingding County, it's now found everywhere on the streets of Yangquan. Thin, crispy, and delicious, it's the perfect souvenir to take home. Guo You Rou | The number one home-cooked dish in Shanxi Originating in Pingding County during the Ming Dynasty, it's hailed as the "number one home-cooked dish in Shanxi." Yangquan's Guo You Rou is soft on the outside and tender on the inside, with a vinegar aroma that enhances the flavor, making it instantly appetizing. Locals recommend the Guo You Rou at "Quanmei Hotel" for an authentic Shanxi taste; you can have a very satisfying meal for an average of 50 yuan per person. Hu Du | The wisdom of the poor Hu Du is a noodle dish unique to Yangquan, made from corn or oat flour. Originally daily food for poor mountain families, it was popular because it was filling, cold-resistant, and helped with rheumatism, yet wasn't hard to eat despite being made of coarse grains. When eating, dip it in a chili-vinegar sauce; the rustic texture of the coarse grains colliding with the sour and spicy sauce is simple but addictive. Other things to try Shredded tofu with vermicelli is a traditional dish essential for weddings, funerals, and festivals in Pingding; the deep-fried shredded tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The magic is that "it looks like a cold dish, but it's piping hot when you eat it." Zao Jie Gao is a traditional cake from Yu County, essential for wedding banquets; it sounds like "early marriage," symbolizing early childbirth and a prosperous life. Chao Bu Lan is made by stir-frying potatoes with flour, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, a regular at night markets. If you're tired from walking, grab a bottle of Weierkang, which Yangquan people have grown up drinking, and raise a glass to welcome every visitor. III. Itinerary suggestions 2-day essential line Day 1: Morning at Yangquan Museum to understand the city's history, walk to Tianqiao Snack Street at noon for Min Qu, Piao Min Qu, and Yangquan Ya Bing (average 15 yuan to get stuffed). Afternoon to Cangshan Scenic Area, walk through the Orphan-Hiding Cave and Lotus Temple to experience the legend of the Orphan of Zhao. Stay in Yu County or return to the city in the evening for an authentic Guo You Rou. Day 2: Early morning to Niangziguan, morning to see the pass city and waterfall, lunch at the pedestrian street at the exit of the scenic area for a Pingding clay pot feast (the three-fresh clay pot broth is incredibly delicious, average 30+ yuan). Afternoon, drive slowly along the Taihang No. 1 Scenic Avenue, or go to the Gukuan Great Wall to see the original Ming Dynasty Great Wall, and return to the city for barbecue in the evening. 3-day in-depth line Based on the 2-day plan, add Day 3: Morning to the Lion Brain Mountain Hundred Regiments Offensive site, lunch with Yangquan Guo You Rou, afternoon to visit Da'an Ancient Village or Xiaohe Ancient Village (hometown of the talented woman Shi Pingmei) to experience the slow pace of the Taihang ancient villages. IV. Practical tips Transport: Yangquan has no civil airport; fly to Taiyuan Wusu Airport and take the airport bus directly to the city. High-speed rail to Yangquan North Station (in Yu County), transfer to the intercity train for about 28 minutes, 10 yuan to Yangquan East Station to enter the city. The scenic spots in Yangquan are far apart, and public transport is infrequent, so self-driving or chartering a car is recommended (charter is about 300 yuan/day). Accommodation: First choice is Yangquan city center, close to the museum, Lion Brain Mountain, and Xinglong Street Night Market, convenient for eating and traveling; Pingding County is half an hour's drive from Niangziguan, with cost-effective homestays; Yu County is suitable for visiting Cangshan and Da'an Ancient Village. Best season: October–November is the most comfortable for red leaves; April is also beautiful when peach blossoms are in full bloom. Clothing: There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light jacket even in summer; there are many hiking trails, so wear non-slip sports shoes. Yangquan isn't the kind of city that stuns you at first glance; its charm needs to be savored slowly—savor the freshness of a bowl of Piao Min Qu, the vicissitudes of a pass city, and the loyalty of a mountain. This Taihang mountain city is worth a special trip.

Pingding is located in Yangquan and is easily accessible. The surrounding area features majestic passes, ancient villages, landscapes, and hot springs. We recommend using Pingding as your base to connect nearby attractions like Niangziguan Pass, Cangshan Mountain, and Daping Hot Springs. It’s a comfortable pace and great value for your money. 🗓️ 3-Day Itinerary Suggestion: Majestic Passes, Landscapes, and Hot Springs Day 1: Niangziguan Pass + Guguan Great Wall, see two types of Great Wall in one day In the morning, take the direct bus from Pingding County to Niangziguan Pass (approx. 1 hour, ticket price around CNY 15). Known as the "Ninth Pass Under Heaven," the pass city, waterfall, and water-side dwellings are all worth seeing. The waterfall creates a lot of mist, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. For lunch, grab a Pingding clay pot feast on the pedestrian street at the scenic area exit. The intangible cultural heritage clay pot stewed lamb with buckwheat sausage is satisfying and costs about CNY 30–50 per person. In the afternoon, take a taxi for about 20 minutes (approx. CNY 25) to the Guguan Great Wall. It is more primitive than Niangziguan, with gravel paths and so few people that you might have the place to yourself for photos. However, some sections are very steep, so non-slip shoes are important. Return to Pingding County for the night. You can find an old shop near North Street for a bowl of lamb soup with two flatbreads—a hearty and comfortable meal. Day 2: Cangshan Mountain + Daping Ancient Village, landscapes and cliffside villages In the morning, depart from Pingding for the Cangshan Scenic Area in Yu County (ticket approx. CNY 78, cheaper if booked online). This is the hiding place of the "Orphan of Zhao." The ancient temples nestled among the mountains and waters are very spiritual; you can touch the "Loyalty Stone" for good luck. For lunch, have a Minqu feast at the food street by the scenic area exit. It features short noodles made from bean flour served with pickled vegetable sauce—don't forget to add a side of oil-fried meat. In the afternoon, charter a car to Daping Ancient Village (approx. CNY 200 round trip, 1.5-hour drive). The entire village hangs on a cliff and is known as the "Potala Palace of Shanxi." The stone paths and stone houses are full of character, and the dried persimmons sold by the local grandmothers are incredibly sweet. In the evening, stay at a hot spring resort in Yu County to soak in a sulfur hot spring and relieve fatigue. Enjoy the mountain view and drink sea buckthorn juice in a private hot spring room—it's very relaxing. Day 3: Shinaoshan Mountain + Pingding Ancient City, a relaxed finale In the morning, return to downtown Yangquan and visit the Shinaoshan Hundred Regiments Offensive Memorial Park (free). Climb to the top to overlook the whole city; the breeze will clear your head. For lunch, have a bowl of Yangquan oil-fried meat with knife-cut noodles in the city. The meat slices are tender and smooth, the scallion and garlic flavors are rich, and don't be afraid to add plenty of vinegar. In the afternoon, return to Pingding and take a slow stroll through the Pingding Ancient City. With its blue bricks and gray tiles, the street isn't long, but the Drum Tower stands on the central axis, and the plaque at the entrance of the Confucian Temple is very old. You need to walk slowly to see the details. Before leaving, pick out some Pingding pottery. Remember two things when choosing: tap it—the sound should be dull, not crisp; hold it—it should feel heavy, not light. This ensures the pottery you buy is durable. 💰 Budget Breakdown (Total approx. CNY 1,350–1,500) · Transportation (approx. CNY 200–250): Bus from Pingding to Niangziguan approx. CNY 15; taxi from Niangziguan to Guguan approx. CNY 25; chartered car to Cangshan/Daping Ancient Village approx. CNY 200 round trip (can be shared); budget approx. CNY 50 for city buses and taxis. · Accommodation (approx. CNY 400–500): Economy hotel in Pingding County approx. CNY 120/night, two nights approx. CNY 240; Yu County hot spring resort CNY 500/night including breakfast for two. If you want to save money, you can return to Pingding for accommodation. · Admission tickets (approx. CNY 200–250): Niangziguan combined ticket approx. CNY 65–100; Cangshan CNY 78; Guguan Great Wall approx. CNY 30–40. Daping Ancient Village, Shinaoshan, and Pingding Ancient City are all free. · Dining (approx. CNY 300–400): Pingding clay pot feast approx. CNY 30–50 per person, Minqu feast approx. CNY 20–30 per person, lamb soup with flatbread approx. CNY 15–20 per person. You can eat very well for three days. 🍜 Local Specialties · Pingding clay pot feast: Stewed in local intangible cultural heritage pottery. The broth of the three-delicacy clay pot is incredibly fresh. Both the lamb pot and tofu pot are worth trying. · Pingding oil-fried meat: Originating from the Ming Dynasty, the meat slices are tender and smooth, with rich scallion and garlic flavors. It pairs perfectly with knife-cut noodles. · Minqu/Piaominqu: A unique type of short bean flour noodle from Pingding, served with pickled vegetable sauce or oil-fried meat. It's tangy and appetizing. · Lamb soup: A classic flavor in the Yangquan area. The meat is sliced thin, the soup is milky white, and it's best enjoyed with two flatbreads. · Yu County fried cake: Freshly fried date paste cake, crispy on the outside and sticky on the inside. CNY 5 each, absolutely delicious. 💡 Practical Tips · Transportation: Driving or chartering a car is most convenient in Pingding as attractions are scattered and bus schedules are limited. If you are not driving, Yangquan Station is right in the city center, making it easy to connect to Pingding and Niangziguan. If you are going specifically for the waterfall, try to get a ticket for a regular-speed train to Niangziguan Station; it's just a short walk to the scenic area entrance. · Clothing: Both the Niangziguan waterfall area and Guguan Great Wall require walking, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. · Best season: Summer and autumn are the most comfortable. In summer, the waterfall has a large volume of water; in autumn, the sky is high and clear, and the red leaves are beautiful. · Special reminder: Please keep quiet when visiting the memorial halls at Cangshan and Shinaoshan to respect these red history sites. When choosing Pingding pottery, remember to "tap for a dull sound and feel for weight"—don't buy brittle, lightweight, inferior products. Three days is just enough to connect the majestic passes, landscapes, and hot springs of eastern Shanxi. It's an affordable, authentic, and very satisfying short trip~

Who says you need to travel like a soldier to master Shanxi? My 20-day in-depth road trip really showed me how it's done! 💪 The whole trip was 4,800 km (including the round trip from Huai'an, Jiangsu). I followed a loop route the entire way, so there was absolutely no backtracking! 🎫 About attraction tickets: I've put the ratings and prices for each attraction in the images! Prices may vary by season, so it's best to check the official notices at the attractions. Buying online is cheaper, and I highly recommend the ✅ Shanxi Cultural Tourism Annual Pass—it's a great value! 🚗 Daily itinerary: D1: Jiangsu → Huangcheng Xiangfu D2: Huangcheng Xiangfu → Fenghuang Happy Valley → Taihang Music Highway → Zheshui Village → Baquan Gorge D3: Baquan Gorge → Niangziguan Pass D4: Niangziguan Pass → Mount Wutai D5: Mount Wutai → Hunyuan County D6: Hunyuan County → Northern Hengshan Mountain → Hanging Temple → Shanhua Temple → Huayan Temple D7: Datong City → Yungang Grottoes → Yingxian Wooden Pagoda → Yanmenguan Pass D8: Yanmenguan Pass → Luyashan Mountain D9: Luyashan Mountain → Qikou Ancient Town D10: Qikou → Taiyuan City (Jinci Temple) D11: Taiyuan → Qiao Family Compound → Pingyao Ancient City D12: Pingyao → Mianshan Mountain D13: Mianshan Mountain → Lingshi County (Wang Family Compound) D14: Lingshi County → Hongdong County (Big Locust Tree) D15: Hongdong County → Xiaoxitian Temple in Xi County → Hukou Waterfall D16: Hukou → Yunqiu Mountain D17: Yunqiu Mountain → Yellow River Datiji Cliff → Yuncheng (Guandi Ancestral Temple) D18: Yuncheng → Pujiu Temple → Yongji City (Stork Tower) D19: Yongji City → Yongle Palace → Ruicheng County (Dayu Ferry) D20: Home 🏨 Accommodation tips: Just stay nearby at each stop; you don't need to worry about finding a good hotel! It might be a little more expensive during peak season, but you definitely won't have trouble finding a place to stay. ⚠️ Worried about a rushed itinerary? Don't be! I tested this route myself, and most of the time I could sleep in and start my day naturally! For example, Hengshan Mountain + Hanging Temple only takes half a day: take the cable car up Hengshan and walk down—3 hours is plenty. The Hanging Temple takes half an hour; the crowds behind you will push you along, so it's hard to spend more time than that even if you want to 😆. Group tours only spend 40 minutes at Hukou Waterfall, but I spent 3 hours there on my own—that's the freedom of a road trip! Most temples can be explored in about half an hour. We're here for sightseeing, not archaeology—the experts have already figured that part out! 🤭

Top choice for a day trip | Majestic Great Wall on one side, flowing water and homes on the other, a hidden gem in Shanxi When visiting Yangquan, Shanxi, don't just look at ancient architecture! You must visit Niangziguan. As the ninth pass of the Great Wall and a strategic throat between Shanxi and Hebei, it is said to be the place where Princess Pingyang led the Niangzi Army to guard. Other parts of the Great Wall are only majestic and steep, but Niangziguan is unique. The majestic pass and ancient castle coexist with clear springs and flowing water. A water town style is hidden in the Taihang Mountains, making for a relaxing, unhurried day trip🌊 📍 Must-visit highlights | A comprehensive guide to the order of your visit 1. Niangziguan Pass City🏰 | Climb the Great Wall and touch the thousand-year-old bricks Head straight to the pass city for the first stop of your trip. Large, mottled bluestone walls stand against the cliffs. Climb the gate tower to check in at the "Jingji Fanping" plaque, stand on the wall to overlook the Mianhe River valley, and take in the endless Taihang Mountains at a glance. Walk slowly on the uneven stone steps. The ancient watchtowers and barbicans are well-preserved. Standing here, you can almost feel the grand momentum of ancient border defense. You can easily take photos with an ancient or martial arts vibe📸 2. Homes on the water🏡 | A Jiangnan-style village hidden in the Taihang Mountains A hidden gem that many people miss! Spring water gushes from the mountains, and the flowing water passes directly through the courtyards, truly achieving the experience of living on water with water flowing under the house. Winding bluestone paths, babbling brooks in front of doors, old houses, and ancient bridges paired with flowing springs completely break the impression of the rugged northern mountains. You can take a slow walk, daydream by the stream, and feel the slow life of the ancient town. The atmosphere is superb💧 3. Niangziguan Waterfall💦 | A spectacular water curtain cascading from the cliff A huge stream of water pours down from a cliff dozens of meters high, forming a spectacular water curtain waterfall with mist flying everywhere. It is very shocking when the water volume is abundant, and if you are lucky on a sunny day, you can even see a rainbow. You can walk along the cliff plank road to watch the waterfall up close and feel the water vapor hitting your face. Coming here in summer provides a full sense of coolness, making it an excellent place to escape the heat✅ 4. Pingyang Lake🛶 | Boating in the canyon to see the green mountains on both sides A long, narrow canyon lake with clear, emerald-green water. We recommend taking a boat tour. While boating on the lake, the steep cliffs on both sides rush towards you, and you can also overlook the distant Zhengtai Railway iron bridge. The scene of mountains and water in the same frame is very unique. If you like to watch the scenery quietly, you must come here ⏰ Basic visitor information 🕒 Opening hours Peak season (Apr 1–Oct 31): 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, last entry at 5:00 PM Off-season (Nov 1–Mar 31): 8:30 AM–5:30 PM ✅ Recommended duration: 3–4 hours, perfect for a day trip 🎫 Ticket information We recommend purchasing the four-attraction combo ticket (Pass City + Homes on the Water + Waterfall + Pingyang Lake). Booking online in advance offers better value Concession policy: Students and seniors aged 60–65 receive half-price tickets with valid ID; seniors over 65 receive free admission to the first gate 🚗 Transportation guide ✅ Self-driving: Navigate to "Niangziguan Scenic Area". The scenic area has a large parking lot, making parking convenient. It takes about 1 hour from downtown Yangquan ✅ Public transport: You can take a direct tourist bus from downtown Yangquan. You can also experience the unique green-skinned train directly to Niangziguan Station, and walk to the scenic area after exiting the station 🍜 Must-try local food in Niangziguan ✅ Pingding Guoyourou (oiled meat): A classic Shanxi dish, fresh, tender, and flavorful ✅ Niangziguan spring water fish: Raised in local spring water, the meat is fresh and tender ✅ Pepper leaf flatbread: Thin, crispy, and fragrant, suitable as a snack on the road ✅ Minqu: A local specialty noodle dish with a smooth texture ✨ Travel tips 1. There are many steps when climbing the pass city, so be sure to wear non-slip, comfortable sports shoes. Some old steps are slippery, so watch your step 2. There are many mosquitoes near the waterfall and water, so it is recommended to prepare mosquito repellent🦟 3. The temperature in the waterfall area is lower in summer, so you can bring a light jacket with you 4. To take clean, high-quality photos, try to arrive early to avoid the afternoon peak of tour groups 5. There is also a niche "Three-Body" mural check-in spot nearby. If you have enough time, you can stop by 💫 Summary Other parts of the Great Wall only have majesty, and other water towns lack character. Niangziguan rarely combines the toughness of a majestic pass with the gentleness of flowing water. Without long-distance travel, a short one-day trip allows you to understand the history of the Great Wall and encounter the rare water town scenery of the north. It is very suitable for family trips, traveling with friends, or solo cultural roaming

🧒💛 I lived in Shanxi for six years as a child and have always missed Shanxi noodles. Today, I had a bowl of authentic stir-fried noodles with pork at Qianmen Dashilan. 🥢😋 📍🏪 The shop is on the east side of Meishi Street, diagonally opposite the east entrance of Dashilan West Street. It is a quaint brick building with a sign hanging above the door that reads "Jinshang Handmade Dalu Noodles." 🪧✨ 🏠🧹 The shop isn't very big, with about a dozen tables. Inside, there is an open kitchen, and the shop is very clean everywhere, with a nice environment. 👀✅ 🍜📺 The shop specializes in handmade Shanxi noodles, and their signature dish is Dalu noodles. The TV was playing a promotional video for the Dalu noodles, which looked mouth-watering. 🤤✨ 🥢🥩 However, today I had another classic Shanxi specialty—stir-fried noodles with pork. Stir-fried pork is a classic Shanxi dish and a representative of Shanxi noodle culture. ⭐🏆 📜🏮 Stir-fried pork originated in the Ming Dynasty. It was originally a government dish in the Pingding area of eastern Shanxi, and later spread throughout the province with the development of Shanxi merchants. It is known as the "number one flavor of the three Jin regions." 🏅🤩 🔥🍳 Stir-frying the pork with the noodles allows the tenderness of the meat and the richness of the sauce to fully soak into the noodles. They are golden and glossy, with every strand coated in the aroma of meat and vinegar. The texture is oily but not greasy. 😋💯 🧄🌶️ There is Ninghuafu aged vinegar on the table, and the self-service condiment area has various seasonings and small pickles. The dried fried chili peppers are very flavorful, and paired with vinegar-soaked garlic, they really enhance the flavor of the stir-fried noodles. 🍶✨ 🦴🥟 Also, when eating Shanxi noodles, you have to pair them with braised pork bones and braised tofu. The braised pork bones are CNY 18 for a large piece, with plenty of meat and well-marinated. The braised tofu is CNY 3 per piece, and it also tastes authentic. 💰😋 🥗😐 In comparison, the cold dish platter in the shop is quite average, the portion is slightly small, and the taste is mediocre. It's not as good as the braised pork bones. 🤷‍♀️❌ 🙋‍♀️💖 The shop's service is good. You can get refills if the noodles aren't enough, and you get a free drink if you save and check in. The young waitress was especially enthusiastic and thoughtful, busy running around while always greeting customers with a smile. Thumbs up. 🥤👍 🌟🔁 The noodles at this shop are quite authentic. I will come back again if I have the chance, and next time I must try the Dalu noodles. 🍜🤩

Hey everyone, don't go squeezing into popular tourist cities for the National Day holiday 😭 I've dug up 4 hidden gems where flights and hotels are incredibly cheap, and the scenery is stunning! The best part is that they aren't crowded, so you can take amazing photos anywhere 📸 Here’s the inside scoop, with every destination planned out for you 👇 [Anhui Lu'an | A slow life in a landscape painting] It has the grandeur of the Dabie Mountains and the beauty of Tiantangzhai. The best part—no lines at all! ✨Trip highlights: · Tiantangzhai: The last primeval forest in East China. The waterfalls will leave you speechless. Remember to wear non-slip shoes; the mountain trails are a bit rugged. · Wanfo Lake: The water is emerald green. Taking a boat ride and feeling the breeze is super relaxing. The little monkeys on the island will interact with you (don't feed them!). · Hongshi Valley: The Danxia landform is dazzlingly red. The stream in the valley is ice-cold, perfect for stream trekking and playing in the water. 📅Itinerary (2–3 days): Day 1: Arrive in Lu'an → Head straight to Tiantangzhai, stay at a homestay near the scenic area Day 2: Tiantangzhai main peak → Waterfall group → Afternoon trip to Yanzihe Grand Canyon Day 3: Wanfo Lake loop → Hongshi Valley → Return trip 🍜Food recommendations: Jinzhai hanging pot (great in winter), Huoshan dendrobium chicken soup (incredibly fresh), Lu'an Guapian tea (a must-buy souvenir) 📌Travel tips: Mountain weather is changeable, so bring a light windbreaker. If driving, watch out for winding mountain roads. Don't overindulge in the "guai zao" wine in the scenic area, as it’s quite potent. [Hubei Xiaogan | Tangchi Hot Springs + ancient charm] Xiaogan is not just the hometown of Dong Yong; it's an underrated leisure city. It's all about soaking in hot springs and relaxing, and it's very affordable. ✨Trip highlights: · Shuangfeng Mountain: The highest peak in Xiaogan. The hiking trails are well-maintained. Seeing the sea of clouds at the summit depends on luck, but the scenery rivals Huangshan. · Guanyin Lake: There's an ancient temple by the lake that's very popular (but we're just here for the scenery). At sunset, the lake surface glitters with gold. · Tangchi Hot Springs: A real natural hot spring. Your skin feels smooth after soaking. The outdoor pools are surrounded by woods, offering excellent privacy. 📅Itinerary (2 days): Day 1: Climb Shuangfeng Mountain → Afternoon at Guanyin Lake → Evening soak at Tangchi Hot Springs (stay at a hot spring hotel) Day 2: Dong Yong Park → Xiaogan Museum (learn about Chu culture) → Have some rice wine → Return trip 🍜Food recommendations: Xiaogan rice wine (a must-try! The kind with fermented rice), Yunmeng fish noodles (excellent in soup), Yingcheng braised pork (rich but not greasy) 📌Travel tips: Remember to bring your own swimsuit for the hot springs; rentals are expensive and ugly. It's best to climb Shuangfeng Mountain in the morning as it gets foggy in the afternoon. Have some small change ready for the bus, as some routes don't support QR code payments. [Shanxi Yangquan | A hardcore ancient city hidden in the Taihang Mountains] Yangquan is the "invisible" city of Shanxi, but it has Niangziguan Pass, Cangshan Mountain, and authentic Jin cuisine. It's a totally buried treasure. ✨Trip highlights: · Niangziguan Pass: The ninth pass of the Great Wall. The pass is built on a cliff, with train tracks right below. It's breathtaking when a train passes through. · Cangshan Mountain: The setting of the "Orphan of Zhao" story. The ancient buildings are hidden deep in the mountains. The most famous spot is the naturally formed "Canggu Cave" (Orphan-Hiding Cave). · Da'pin Ancient Village: The "Little Potala Palace" deep in the Taihang Mountains. Stone houses are stacked layer upon layer. It's not commercialized, and the locals are still drying corn. 📅Itinerary (2 days): Day 1: Niangziguan Pass → Guguan Great Wall → Evening hot pot in the city Day 2: Cangshan Mountain → Da'pin Ancient Village (the mountain road is long, charter a car) → Return trip 🍜Food recommendations: Yangquan Piaominqu (made with mung bean noodles, sour and spicy, appetizing), Pingding guoyourou (stir-fried pork, great with rice), Zaojie cake (chewy, sweet treat) 📌Travel tips: The road to Da'pin Ancient Village is narrow, so drive slowly. There's a steep section of stairs at Niangziguan Pass, so wear sneakers. Shanxi is windy and dry, so bring lip balm and hand cream. [Yunnan Qujing | A "Spring City" even more laid-back than Kunming] Qujing is the source of the Pearl River. The climate is amazing, and prices are affordable. During the National Day holiday, you can still catch the tail end of the wild mushroom season—you'll eat until you have to hold onto the wall to walk out. ✨Trip highlights: · Pearl River Source: The source of the three rivers. The water is crystal clear. The surrounding forest coverage is very high, and the air is sweet. · Luoping Peak Forest: Although the rapeseed flower season is over, the peak forest itself is magnificent, with clouds and mist making it look like an ink wash painting. · Haifeng Wetland: Known as "Little Guilin of Yunnan." The aquatic plants are lush, egrets fly in flocks, and the sunset is so beautiful it leaves you speechless. · Cuishan Film and Television City: Not crowded, great for photos. You can take pictures of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture anywhere. Wear Hanfu and you'll feel like you've traveled back in time. 📅Itinerary (3 days): Day 1: Pearl River Source → Zhanyi spicy chicken → Evening stroll at Qilin Lane snack street Day 2: Luoping Peak Forest → Duoyi River (play in the water) → Stay in Luoping Day 3: Cycling at Haifeng Wetland → Cuishan Film and Television City → Return trip 🍜Food recommendations: Zhanyi spicy chicken (spicy and satisfying), Xuanwei ham (bring a few pounds back), Steamed Ersi (a must-have for breakfast), Wild mushroom hot pot (must be cooked thoroughly if you're worried about poisoning) 📌Travel tips: The altitude is slightly high (1,900m), so avoid strenuous exercise. The UV rays are strong, so you must wear sunscreen. Don't drink alcohol when eating wild mushrooms—take my advice. There are many mosquitoes in the wetland, so carry mosquito repellent with you. One last thing: these four places are truly affordable. You can eat until you're stuffed for CNY 30 per person, and find clean, comfortable accommodation for under CNY 200. If you don't want to see crowds of people during the National Day holiday, just go for it 🏃‍♀️

The Taihang Mountains stand tall, and the majestic Niangziguan Pass rises proudly. This renowned site offers more than just the grandeur of a Great Wall fortress; it is also graced by the delicate beauty of the Water Curtain Cave waterfall and the Mian River. Home to a rare karst spring system in North China, groundwater gushes from mountain fissures and cascades down cliffs dozens of meters high. The Water Curtain Cave waterfall plunges from the sky, hanging before the cliff like a massive, pristine white curtain. The roaring water echoes through the valley, sending spray flying like pearls and jade as mist rises into the air. Hidden behind this curtain of water lies a natural cave in the cliff face—the Water Curtain Cave itself. Visitors can follow a path behind the falls, where the rumbling water and cool, refreshing mist greet them. On sunny days, you might even catch a glimpse of a brilliant rainbow, a truly natural wonder. The poet Guo Moruo vividly captured this spectacle with the lines: "A waterfall hangs over Niangziguan, soaring into the valley like a hidden dragon." The waterfall plunges into the deep ravine, where countless clear streams converge to form the Mian River, winding its way through the deep Taihang canyons. Surrounded by layers of mountains, the ancient Great Wall rises and falls along the ridges, overlooking the river valley from above. The vigor of the majestic pass, the historical weight of the Great Wall, the wild energy of the waterfall, and the gentle flow of the river all converge here. This blend of strength and grace creates a rare "Little Jiangnan of the North" within the Taihang Mountains, leaving every visitor captivated by the unique charm of its majestic mountains and beautiful waters.

I went to Yangquan with endless anticipation for its ancient architecture and autumn scenery, but after calculating the costs upon my return, my perspective on spending has completely collapsed 💔! It's not that it isn't worth visiting; Yangquan in September and October is crisp and cool, and the ancient villages and landscapes are truly as beautiful as a painting 🍂. However! If you, like me, foolishly rush in without doing your homework, you will really spend a lot of money unnecessarily! This guide, paid for with my own hard-earned money, is a must-read for anyone planning to go to Yangquan. Please take note! 👇 · — 📍 About location and transportation (the first big trap!) Yangquan is in eastern Shanxi, very close to Shijiazhuang, so many people choose to take the high-speed train. 🚄 Critical tip: Yangquan North Station is not in downtown Yangquan! It's in Yu County! It's a full 40+ kilometers away from the city center! My heart bled when I paid for a taxi to get there. Be sure to check for shuttle buses or carpooling options to the city center in advance, and definitely don't just blindly hail a taxi after exiting the station! 🚗 If you are driving from the surrounding area, taking the highway is very convenient, but some old neighborhoods in the city have narrow roads and parking spaces are hard to find. I recommend parking your car at the hotel and using shared bikes or public buses to get around. · — 🗺️ My efficient itinerary (avoiding aimless sightseeing) Day 1: Downtown culture and night views Arrive in the city -> Xinglong Street (try authentic snacks) -> Dayangquan Ancient Village (experience the atmosphere of the old streets) -> Shinao Mountain (go in the evening to watch the sunset and overlook the city night view). Day 2: Taihang landscapes and mountain passes Depart from the city -> Niangziguan Pass (see the "water homes" and climb the Great Wall) -> Guguan Great Wall (fewer people than Niangziguan, more historical atmosphere) -> Return to the city. Day 3: Ancient architecture and autumn colors City -> Cangshan Mountain (the birthplace of the Orphan of Zhao, full of autumn colors in September–October) -> Guanshan Mountain (ancient trees towering, suitable for a leisurely walk) -> Return trip. · — 🍜 Food recommendations (avoid tourist spots, eat in the city!) Yangquan's food has very distinct Shanxi characteristics, but please, please do not eat near tourist attractions. It's expensive and mediocre. Go to the old alleys in the city to find restaurants where the locals eat! 🥩 Guoyourou (oiled meat): A famous Shanxi dish with golden, tender meat slices. It's amazing with a bowl of white rice! 🍜 Minqu: A specialty Yangquan noodle dish, also known as "Piao Minqu." The noodles are thin and long, with a rich bean flavor, and the broth is sour, spicy, and appetizing. 🥔 Hudu: A paste-like dish made from potatoes and flour, served with tomato sauce and chili. It may not look like much, but you won't be able to stop eating it once you start. 🥒 Pingding dried cucumber: Crisp and refreshing, a great palate cleanser. You can buy some to take home as a souvenir. 🍖 Yangquan Yabing (pressed cake): Thin as paper, crispy and delicious. It's a great snack for the road. · — 🏠 Accommodation guide (save money and stay comfortable) ✅ Recommended area: Near Walmart/Xinglong Street in the city center. This is the downtown area, making it convenient to get to all the attractions. There's plenty of good food nearby, and you can visit the night market in the evening. ✅ Pingding County: If you want to go to Niangziguan Pass early the next day, you can stay in Pingding County, which offers great value. 💡 Suggestion: Don't blindly pursue homestays at tourist attractions. Many accommodations around tourist spots are not only expensive but also have inconsistent hygiene standards. Check reviews on legitimate booking channels in advance and choose chain hotels that have been renovated in the last two years for the safest bet. · — 📸 Great photo spots (bring your camera!) 1️⃣ Niangziguan Pass: The water mills and stone paths of the "water homes." Wear Hanfu or "New Chinese Style" clothing for photos—it feels just like a Jiangnan water town. 2️⃣ Cangshan Mountain: Ancient buildings on cliffs, combined with the red leaves of September–October. Use a wide-angle lens for epic shots! 3️⃣ Dayangquan Ancient Village: Authentic old Shanxi streets with blue bricks and gray tiles. It has a profound sense of history and is a must-visit for cultural photography. 4️⃣ Shinao Mountain: Go in the evening when the sunset glow spills over the city. It's perfect for silhouettes or panoramic city shots. · — ⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid (my hard-learned lessons!) 1️⃣ Transportation trap: The distance from Yangquan North Station to the city center is the biggest trap. Many people will actively solicit passengers after you exit the station; don't follow them easily. Check for official buses or queue for a taxi in advance. Try to buy a ticket to Yangquan Station (the old station) instead, as it's right in the city! 2️⃣ Ticket trap: Some attractions bundle entrance tickets with internal transportation or cable cars. Buy based on your own physical stamina; don't listen to the salespeople at the entrance who say "it's huge inside and you must take the shuttle." Actually, walking offers better scenery. 3️⃣ Dining trap: Be sure to ask about prices before ordering! Especially when eating local specialties, clarify if the menu is priced per serving or per jin (500g). Don't eat right at the entrance of tourist attractions; walk a bit further into the alleys. 4️⃣ Weather and clothing: The temperature difference between day and night in Yangquan is huge in September–October. Wear light clothes at noon, but you'll need a windbreaker or a thin down jacket in the morning and evening. Be sure to wear very comfortable sneakers; the stone paths in ancient villages and mountain roads are tough on your feet. 5️⃣ Souvenirs: Buy souvenirs at local farmers' markets or large supermarkets. Don't buy beautifully packaged gift boxes at tourist attractions; the price can be several times higher. 6️⃣ Rational consumption: Don't be swayed by gimmicks like "once in a thousand years" or "purely handmade." Yangquan is a slow-paced old city that needs to be savored, not just rushed through while spending money. · — Yangquan is a city with deep heritage. As long as you do your homework and avoid the consumer traps aimed at tourists, you will find that the people here are simple and honest, and the scenery is very healing 💕. I hope my lessons can help you protect your wallet!
