#cityplaybook Lok Kawi Wildlife Park was officially opened to the public on 17 February 2007. It is located along the old Penampang-Papar road and was fully developed by the Sabah State Wildlife Department. Among the animals that inhabit this Zoo (Zoological Component) are Bornean Pigmy Elephants, Sumatran Rhinos, Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Malayan Tigers, as well as several different species of Deer. Elsewhere, the Botanical Component offers visitors the opportunity to traverse the forest along botanical trails. The paved trail is approximately 1.4 kilometers long.

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park welcomes you to see rare animals from Borneo (Kalimantan). The proboscis monkeys are so cute😍 They have long noses and impressive tails. They look dignified even when they're sitting✨ The longer their noses, the more handsome they are. Their feeding behavior is so comical that I wanted to watch them through the glass forever. The binturong, which only lives in the jungles of Southeast Asia, has a popcorn-scented urine😊 Borneo is the island of orangutans, so of course you can meet lively orangutans⭐️ Each cage is huge! And since there are no cages for orangutans and binturongs, they can relax and unwind❤️ There are also rare Malayan bears, the smallest bears in the world, and emus, making this a hot spot for animal lovers♪ The park isn't very large, so you can relax in it for an hour or two. Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is both a zoo and a botanical garden. The flora and fauna presented in the park lives in Borneo or in other regions of Malaysia. The park has several families of unique primates and a large collection of tropical animals and birds. For the convenience of visitors, small electric trains run through the vast territory. Botanical garden is part of the tropical forest, along which paths are laid to the most interesting flora objects: orchids, ferns, rafflesia - the largest flower on the planet with a diameter of up to 1 meter and a weight of up to 12 kilograms. I am so pleased I went to Lok Kawi. I wanted to spend more time observing orangutans and the conditions were good for them, lots of orangutans to observe. Also an animal show where you could see snakes. Other animals include Proboscis Monkeys, tiger, elephants, leopard, birds, gibbons etc. Spent 3 hours here and was v worthwhile. Although this place is not really big, I would recommend everyone to go. I spend around 2 hours here in total. At the entrance you will find some older bird cages, which are not the best. But later in the park, the cages become bigger and better decorated for the animals. There was quite some construction going on, so hopefully this will result in all bigger/better cages in the future.Had lots of fun during animal show which were full of surprises.My kids having so much time. We found the staff to be very polite and knowledgeable, the animals all looked healthy and content. There are 4 beautiful orangutans which we were able to feed. Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is Sabah's main zoo, and it's seriously cool! It's just 20-30 minutes from central Kota Kinabalu, so you can easily combine it with island hopping or a sunset at Tanjung Aru Beach. 🦧 The park offers a chance to see all the inhabitants of Borneo up close in one visit. · Proboscis monkeys — these monkeys with their large noses look so unusual that you can easily hang out near their enclosure for 20 minutes. These monkeys are endemic to the island; you won't see them in the wild anywhere else. · Pygmy elephants — 🐘 Another very interesting, albeit controversial, species of elephant native to Borneo. According to legend, they served as the inspiration for Dumbo from the Disney cartoon. · Orangutans — the true red kings of Borneo. The best time to see them in the park is during feeding time. · Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world, and they have a funny yellow "bib" on their chest. · Malayan tigers – grace and power 🐅 · Rhinos, civet cats, leopards, deer – too many to list! 🌿 What else to see: · Botanical Garden – you can walk through the jungle along a special trail (1.4 km), see carnivorous water lilies, ginger, and medicinal plants. · Children's Zoo – if you're with children, you can pet the animals and even ride elephants (on weekends!) · Animal Show – every day at 11:00 AM and 3:15 PM (except Fridays). 🟡 How to get there: · By car/taxi: About 30 minutes from the center of KK, a taxi costs about 35-40 ringgit one-way. Lok Kai Wildlife Park in Sabah is more diverse than I expected. It's about a 30-minute ride from downtown Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, by taxi or Grab. The entrance fee is RM20 per adult for foreigners, cash only, so please bring enough cash. Upon entering, you'll see a sign stating that many feeding activities are cancelled on Fridays, so avoid visiting the zoo on Fridays if you want to see them. Fortunately, it was during the school holidays, and there were two animal shows a day, at 11:15 and 15:30, which were very exciting and not to be missed. The enclosure isn't large, but it's well-organized. Besides parrot and toucan shows, there are also rare bearcats, which are very cute. A half-day visit (about 3 hours) is sufficient. During the Christmas holidays, there's a Christmas tree to welcome you!

#TravelGuide Kota Kinabalu is a versatile travel destination where you can enjoy both the mountains and the sea. My first time in Kota Kinabalu, I enjoyed island hopping, but compared to Thailand and the Philippines, which are famous for island hopping, it's relatively less cost-effective. Malaysia's high cost of living may be a factor, but I personally wouldn't recommend island hopping. ❗️So, what are some things to do in Kota Kinabalu? Kota Kinabalu's Borneo rainforest is said to be the oldest and most preserved rainforest in the world. While the Amazon rainforest is certainly worth the time and money, visiting it from Asia is quite expensive. So, if you're interested in jungle trekking or exploring diverse flora and fauna, I recommend the various trekking experiences available in Kota Kinabalu. For my short trip of two nights and three days, I took the Mount Kinabalu Tour, which allowed me to explore the alpine ecosystem; the Bongawan Tour, where I enjoyed a river cruise through the rainforest and a breathtaking sunset; and the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, where I encountered diverse species unique to Borneo's rainforest, including pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills. It was a short but fulfilling experience of Kota Kinabalu. I'll share my tour and detailed itinerary. Day 1️⃣ Flights from Korea to Kota Kinabalu typically arrive late at night or early in the morning. Therefore, for my first day, I booked a Mount Kinabalu day tour from Korea on Trip.com. I thought about searching at Jesselton Point, but since the main focus there was on hopping tours and firefly tours, I couldn't find any companies offering Mount Kinabalu tours. The price was around 50,000 KRW, and admission to the Rafflesia Garden and Poring Hot Springs wasn't included. For detailed information on the day tour, please refer to my other post. 🏞️Mount Kinabalu Day Tour The bus departs from the Waterfront (downtown) at 7:00 AM and visits Mount Kinabalu Viewpoint, Rafflesia Garden, Poering Hot Springs, and Desa Palm Farm. Jungle trekking is available at Poering Hot Springs. We trek for about 20 minutes to Kipungit Falls. Along the way, we encounter a variety of plants, insects, and birds. The guide provided helpful explanations, ensuring we didn't miss a single detail. 🌅Todak Waterfront Sunset After arriving in the city, we headed to the observation deck near the Kota Kinabalu Central Market, a popular spot for locals. Take a moment to gaze out at the stunning Kota Kinabalu sunset, considered one of the world's top three sunsets. 🥭Filipino Market (Pasar Kraftangan) Mango Boy, a Kota Kinabalu celebrity who once took the internet by storm, is the place where you can meet him. You can sample and purchase a variety of mango flavors, including honey mango, apple mango, and guava mango. If you visit after 10 PM, they sell pre-cut mangoes at a discount. Since my accommodation was nearby, I went out and bought mangoes at the discounted price every night during my stay. These mangoes were actually even more delicious. 😅 Day 2️⃣ 🏨Jesselton Sunset Seaview Vacation Condos I stayed at a condo right next to Jesselton Point. The infinity pool was perfect for a swim. After a late night's sleep, a dip was a perfect way to wake up and start the day. 🏞️ Bongawan Firefly Tour After lunch, we left our accommodation at Jesselton Point for the firefly tour we'd booked. Bongawan is 80km from the city center and takes about an hour and a half. Here, you can experience the rainforest by riding an electric boat along the Bongawan River. Water lizards and monkeys are common, and if you're lucky, you might even spot crocodiles. Furthermore, because the area is pristine, you can also see fireflies that twinkle like Christmas trees. It's a great place for couples and families alike. It's also a famous sunset spot. The panoramic sunset view from Sunset Point, where the sea and river meet, was one of the most beautiful moments of my Kota Kinabalu trip. 🍴 Suang Tain Seafood Restaurant By the time we returned to the city after the tour, it was past 9pm, making it a bit awkward to have dinner. Although the tour provides food, it's a bit disappointing, so we decided to have dinner at a restaurant that serves seafood (crustaceans) that suits Korean tastes. It's a bit pricey, but you'll enjoy high-quality seafood. Day 3️⃣ 🕌Kota Kinabalu Masjid (Masjid Bandaraya) This blue-roofed mosque is a regular sight in photos taken in Kota Kinabalu. For a small fee, you can wear traditional attire and experience Islamic culture. However, photography is prohibited inside, so if you're just looking for photos, you can just buy a ticket to the building's garden. 🐒Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (Taman Hidupan Liar Lok Kawi) On Day 2, we saw proboscis monkeys on the firefly tour, but we saw them from afar, which was disappointing. Then, I heard about a wildlife park where injured wild animals are cared for and where you can get up close and personal with them, so I decided to visit. I was able to get up close with a variety of Borneo's iconic animals, including the world's smallest elephant, pygmy monkeys, a family of proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills, and Borneo moon bears. I bought jams like kaya jam and pineapple jam, as well as local black tea called Sabati. The staff spoke Korean fluently, so shopping was hassle-free.
