"Tibetan Easy Travel" offers official tour vehicles. Don’t risk cheap rides from unlicensed drivers. 🏔️ Recommended attractions I visited Qiangbalin Monastery the afternoon I arrived. It’s free and right on the edge of Chamdo town. The prayer path overlooks the confluence of the Zhaqu and Angqu rivers. The sunset light makes for amazing photos. Plan a full day for Ranwu Lake and Laigu Glacier. Laigu tickets cost about 100 yuan. Horseback riding to the glacier tongue is 100 yuan per person. The blue ice in July isn’t as pure as in winter, but wildflowers bloom by the lake, creating stunning reflections. Walking a section of the lakeside boardwalk at upper Ranwu is enough; no need to force yourself to finish it. Zizhu Monastery is in Dingqing at 4,800 meters. It’s a Bon religion temple hanging on a cliff. Admission is free, but the roads are winding. Take motion sickness medicine if needed. The Butuo Sister Lakes in Dingqing host a local horse race in July, offering a lively tent city atmosphere. If you’re driving G318, stop at the Nujiang 72 Bends viewing platform. Hotels like Ruiting Holiday, City Convenience (Chama Square branch), and Borui Mandan all have ratings above 4.2. Oxygen rooms cost just over 300 yuan per night. Compare prices on Trip.com with and without breakfast before booking. The location is close to Qiangbalin Monastery and the Lancang River. It’s also convenient to stroll to Chama Square for a late-night snack. In Ranwu town, book a lakeside guesthouse. July availability is decent, but prices rise on weekends. After enjoying stone pot chicken, you can relax in your room with a lake view—worth it. On the G318 route through Basu and Zuogong, Maya oxygen hotel and Shangkewyou (Zuogong Zhuran New District branch) offer oxygen and humidifiers, perfect for resting during long drives. The GreenTree Inn in Zuogong has a deluxe king room with an oxygen machine and massage chair for under 500 yuan, offering great value. If you’re visiting Zizhu Monastery in Dingqing, stay in the county town rather than at the mountain base. The lower altitude makes sleeping much easier. Nujiangyuan Hotel has reliable hot water, which is rare in northern Tibet. 🍜 Food recommendations Tibetan hot pot is a must. The copper pot is filled with yak meat, beef tongue, and Tibetan pork, plus some seasonal vegetables. Two people can eat their fill for just over 200 yuan. There are many restaurants around Chama Square; any one you pick won’t disappoint. Mangkang Yanjing’s Jiajia noodles are an intangible cultural heritage. Small bowls come one after another, and the owner keeps refilling. After finishing, they count bowls with stones. You can get full for just over 20 yuan. The meat sauce is made from Tibetan pork bones and is very flavorful. Don’t buy dried yak meat at tourist spots. In Dingqing county town, behind the Lao Sichuan supermarket, there’s a local stall selling hind leg meat for 80 yuan per jin. Dip it in chili powder to taste the creamy flavor. Butter tea and tsampa are standard breakfast items. The savory taste might take getting used to, but they really help with altitude sickness. In Leiwuqi town, try the butter tea with a little saffron at Amala Tibetan restaurant. It costs 10 yuan per set with barley cakes and is worth trying. Summer-only treats include ginseng fruit yogurt. If you see it, don’t miss out. It’s sweet and sour, richer than mainland yogurt. Around Gongjue, Awang’s whole roasted lamb must be booked in advance. The stone-cooked "Aduoji" is even wilder—lamb tripe stuffed with lamb meat and slow-cooked with hot stones, an old herding area recipe 🥢 Chamdo isn’t a place for rushing through just to check off sights. Slow down, wait for the cheers at a grassland horse race, or watch the sunset by Ranwu Lake. These moments will stay with you longer than you expect.

It wasn’t until I dove into the route along National Highway 317 that I realized eastern Tibet is the true hidden paradise on earth. No crowds of tourists, no commercial atmosphere—just 3,000-year-old Bon temples and red earth burning to the sky. 📍 About route selection Most people take the Sichuan-Tibet southern route G318, but the essence of eastern Tibet is actually on G317. Starting from Chamdo city heading northwest, passing through Leiwuqi → Dingqing → Bianba. The entire trip is about 450 km, recommended to spend 4–5 days for an in-depth journey. In 2026, the road conditions on the Chamdo section of National Highway 317 are generally good. However, the last 12 km mountain section from Dingqing to Zizhu Temple is a sharp-turn gravel road. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required. Two-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly discouraged from attempting it. 🏡 Accommodation arrangements ⛰️ The guesthouse is located about 20 km from Dingqing county town toward Zizhu Mountain in a Tibetan village. Built on a terraced slope halfway up the mountain, opening the courtyard door reveals layered terraces and distant mountains. ⛰️ The rooms are renovated traditional Tibetan stone and wood structures, preserving original wooden beams and hand-painted window frames. The windows face the six bright red peaks of Zizhu Mountain. At sunrise, the entire mountain looks like it’s on fire 🔥 ⛰️ The courtyard is furnished with Tibetan cushions and low tea tables. In the evening, drinking sweet tea with the hostess while watching clouds drift over the mountain peaks, with someone burning incense in the distance— this kind of peace is impossible to find in the city. 🗺️ Four-day in-depth itinerary ❖ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 Chamdo city → Leiwuqi ▪️ Start by visiting Qiangbalin Monastery in Chamdo city, located at the confluence of the Angqu and Zhaqu rivers. The route features typical eastern Tibetan canyon landscapes with spectacular red sandstone mountains. ▪️ In the morning, restock fuel and dry food in Dingqing county town. ⚠️ There are no shops or running water on Zizhu Mountain, so bring enough supplies. ▪️ Depart for the mountain at noon. The 37 km trip should allow 1.5 hours. The last 12 km is a gravel road with sharp turns and steep slopes, more challenging than the 72 bends. Some sections have cliffs on one side, making passing other vehicles extremely difficult. Novice drivers are strongly advised against this—it’s not a joke. ▪️ Arrive at Zizhu Temple in the afternoon, at 4,800 meters elevation. Six bright red karst peaks rise sharply, with the white-walled, gold-topped temple nestled in the cliffside. A 3,000-year-old Bon sacred site, free admission, open all day. ▪️ In summer, sunset is around 8:30 PM, with light coming from the west. The entire Zizhu Mountain changes from ochre red to golden red, prayer flags fluttering in the wind. Honestly, this scene is a hundred times more stunning than any documentary footage. ❖ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯 In-depth at Zizhu Temple + Dingqing Danxia ▪️ Wake up at 5 AM to watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds. In summer, the valley is usually filled with clouds, creating a sea of clouds. The peaks piercing through the clouds is what I call eastern Tibet’s greatest wonder. ▪️ In the morning, walk the circumambulation path around the temple. There are several small retreat huts clinging to nearly vertical cliffs, connected only by simple wooden ladders. Just look, don’t attempt to climb. ▪️ In the afternoon, descend the mountain. The Danxia landforms around Dingqing are worth photographing slowly. The mountains on both sides of National Highway 317 show vast areas of orange-red, brown-red, and deep red. On sunny days, any curve offers a spectacular view. ▪️ Dingqing is the birthplace of the Reba dance. If you’re lucky to catch a local festival, you can see the original Reba drum dance. ❖ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟰 Dingqing → Bianba Three-color Lake → Return ▪️ Dingqing to Bianba is about 200 km | 4+ hours. The Three-color Lake is a hidden gem. The white lake, black lake, and yellow lake are adjacent but have very different colors. ▪️ Near the lake is the Puyu Glacier. In summer, be cautious during the ice cave melting period. Do not enter the ice cave; just admire it from the outside—it’s already stunning. ▪️ Return can be by the same route to Chamdo or detour from Bianba toward Luolong. Zhuomalangcuo Lake in Luolong is so off the beaten path that it has almost no tourists. If time allows, take a detour to see it. 🎒 Essential survival tips for this route 🔸 Zizhu Temple is at 4,800 meters, nearly 1,000 meters higher than Ranwu Lake. The risk of altitude sickness is significantly higher. It’s recommended to take Rhodiola a week in advance. Move slowly uphill. Avoid running, jumping, or shouting. 🔸 Dingqing county town has a gas station. Fill up before heading up the mountain. There are no commercial facilities on the mountain. Bring at least 2 L of drinking water and high-calorie food. 🔸 Mobile signal: 4G is normal in Dingqing county town, but most of the mountain route has no signal. Download offline maps in advance and bring a walkie-talkie just in case. 🔸 Accommodation is basic, so be mentally prepared. There are hotels in the county town, but hot water and heating may be unstable. Guesthouses offer a better experience but have simpler facilities, suitable for those who can rough it. 🔸 July is the Zizhu Temple festival season. From late June to mid-August, there are spirit dance ceremonies. If you’re lucky to be there, you can see monks wearing masks performing ancient Bon rituals. This kind of scene can’t be seen outside Tibet. 💡 The mindset for traveling 317 This route is not suitable for first-time visitors to Tibet. It’s better for travelers who have already been to Lhasa and Nyingchi and want to explore deeper. There are few supply points, high altitude, and complex road conditions. But the rewards are huge— You’ll see Tibet in its most raw and authentic form, unfiltered by any lens. It’s a landscape and faith that have barely changed in 3,000 years. After this trip, even staying in the city feels surreal. Those cliffside temples, red mountains, and sea of clouds sunrises feel like memories from a parallel world, replaying endlessly in your mind 🎞️

Since 2022, the town’s infrastructure has been upgraded significantly. Roads have been widened, trails improved, and even the viewpoints are now much better planned. The experience of visiting Ranwu now is completely different from five years ago. · —————————————— 🌊 How to choose among the three lake sections? Many guides just say "go to Ranwu Lake," but the upper, middle, and lower lakes each have their own character👇 “Upper lake · Yangcuo Lake” — the wildest feel 25 km from town, accessible via County Road G559. It has the largest water volume in summer and the widest lake surface, surrounded by dense primeval forest on both sides. Few tourists visit here.
