Regret not going earlier! This place is cool and uncrowded in July
July in China is half like a steamer and half like an oven. But some places are seriously underrated—just a three-hour high-speed train ride away, the temperature is even more comfortable than an air-conditioned room, and there aren’t many people. This time I’m not recommending Dali or Lijiang. I picked a few cool spots hidden in deep mountains, grasslands, and by lakes, with a wild vibe, local life, and old-fashioned charm. The temperature ranges from the low 20s to just over 30. If you don’t want to be packed like a meat patty, come with me.
NO.1 Xing'an League | Inner Mongolia
⏰ In late July, Arxan’s daytime high is around 25℃, and you’ll need a light jacket at night. I arrived at Arxan National Forest Park at 3 PM. The water surface of Tuofengling Tianchi was rippling in the wind, and sunlight filtered through the clouds like scattered silver.
📍 From the park entrance, take the sightseeing bus to Tianchi, about 20 minutes. Along the way, it’s all larch and birch trees, and the air smells of pine resin.
⚠️ Don’t just ride to the end. First visit Azalea Lake, where there are fewer people, the water is a blue-green, and there’s a small wetland on the shore where you can hear frogs croaking.
🍜 Outside the park, in Arxan city, there’s a restaurant called “Mountain People’s Home.” Their hand-pulled lamb with chive flowers is so tender you can tear it with chopsticks. The dipping sauce has wild onions and smells amazing. Note: The park ticket is valid for two days, but you have to pay for the sightseeing bus again on the second day. Whether it’s worth it depends on your pace.
NO.2 Wenshan | Yunnan
In July, Puzhehei’s lotus flowers are in full bloom.
📍 Take the high-speed train from Kunming South to Puzhehei Station, 1 hour 10 minutes. From the station, a shared ride to the park entrance costs about 20 yuan per person. I stayed at a lakeside inn in “Xianrendong Village.” Opening the window, there’s a lotus pond, and the leaves rustle in the breeze.
⏰ The best time to photograph lotus flowers is 6:30–8 AM when the light is soft and the flowers just open. They wilt in the afternoon.
⚠️ If you take a willow-leaf boat on the lake, bring a waterproof bag because other boats might splash water on you anytime, but you can splash back—that’s the local game.
🍜 In the village, “Yi Family Courtyard” serves sour soup fish made with local mint and litsea cubeba. The soup is appetizingly sour, the fish tender and smooth. Pair it with a bowl of cold rice noodles for a refreshing meal. If you don’t want a battle-style experience, rent an electric bike to circle the lake. Two hours is enough. Stop and relax whenever you find a good spot—it’s more relaxing than rushing through attractions.
NO.3 Changji | Xinjiang
In July, the Tianshan snow hasn’t fully melted. It’s hot at the foot of the mountain, but cool as soon as you go up.
📍 Drive from Urumqi to Tianshan Tianchi for about 1.5 hours. Along the way, you’ll see wildflowers and snow-capped mountains together.
⚠️ The Tianchi boardwalk has two routes: one to the West Queen Mother Temple, which is crowded; the other to Feilong Pool, which is quieter with the sound of water, perfect for resting.
⏰ The light at Tianchi is harshest from noon to 2 PM. It’s better to visit in the morning or at dusk.
🍜 After descending, the wheat fields in Jiangbulake are turning yellow. When the wind blows, they look like waves. The best time to visit is 4–6 PM. The colorful bay’s yardang landforms are most beautiful at sunset, with red sandstone glowing warm orange and long shadows stretching. Note: Driving between these spots takes 3–4 hours, so you can’t do it all in one day. It’s best to split into two days, staying overnight in Qitai County. Lamb skewers with baked naan are cheap and filling.
NO.4 Wuhan | Hubei
Wuhan’s summer is famously hot, but East Lake and Mulan Mountain in July are exceptions.
📍 The East Lake greenway is over 100 km long. I recommend cycling to the Moshan area, where the trees form a dense canopy and the lake breeze cools the air by 5 degrees compared to downtown.
⚠️ Before 4 PM, Yellow Crane Tower Park is so crowded the stairs are blocked. Go after 5:30 PM for softer light and a view of the Yangtze River sunset.
📍 Songyang Temple is hidden deep in Mulan Mountain, about an hour’s drive from downtown. The temple is small with few visitors. There’s a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree in the courtyard. Sitting in its shade for 20 minutes, you’ll only hear cicadas.
🍜 In Huangpi’s Mulan Cultural Ecological Tourism Area, there’s a farmhouse restaurant where the free-range chicken soup is slow-cooked over charcoal with shiitake mushrooms and goji berries. One sip brings sweetness and umami. If you’re traveling with elders or kids, rent an electric cart to circle East Lake—easy and sun-safe. For photos, the front of Yellow Crane Tower is crowded, but the “Simenkou Overpass” on the side is less busy and offers good angles.
NO.5 Yangzhou | Jiangsu
The stereotype is “smoky flowers in March in Yangzhou,” but July evenings are actually very pleasant.
📍 Enter from the south gate of Slender West Lake. Walk along the lakeside to the “Twenty-Four Bridges” section, where willows sway and painted boats glide on the water, carrying the scent of lotus.
⚠️ The rockery group in Ge Garden is shaded from 2 to 4 PM, making photos look dull. It’s better to go in the morning when sunlight makes bamboo leaves translucent and shadows fall on white walls like ink paintings.
🍜 Near He Garden, “Jiangjiaqiao Dumpling and Noodle House” serves shrimp roe dumplings in a light soy broth with shrimp roe floating on top. One sip is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows drop. If you’re short on time, Slender West Lake and Ge Garden are just one street apart and can be visited in one day. You can also dedicate a whole day to He Garden alone. The three spots are close enough to walk between.
NO.6 Shangrao | Jiangxi
📍 Take the cable car up Sanqing Mountain. From Jinsha Cableway, it’s about 10 minutes to the mid-mountain.
⏰ The 7 AM sunlight splits the peaks into light and shadow. The sea of clouds hangs low at the mid-mountain. Walking the plank road, your feet are above the clouds, like floating.
⚠️ Wuyuan Jiangwan’s autumn drying isn’t only in autumn; you can see it in summer too, but much less. For a rich view, go in October. The terraced fields of Huangling are lush green in July. From the top, they look like layers of matcha cake.
🍜 At the foot of Guifeng Mountain, “Wang’s Rice Cake” is steamed from rice batter, sweet with red dates and raisins, soft and not greasy, one yuan each. If you’re with elders, note that Sanqing Mountain’s plank road has many steps. Walking the whole loop takes four hours. It’s better to walk half and turn back at “Goddess Peak” to save energy without regret.
NO.7 Yushu | Qinghai
This area averages over 4,000 meters in elevation. July temperatures are just in the teens, and you’ll need a down jacket at night.
📍 The “Yangtze River source” area in Sanjiangyuan National Park is about a two-hour drive from Yushu city. Along the way, you might see Tibetan antelope and wild donkeys, but don’t get too close—they’re very alert.
⚠️ The core area of Hoh Xil is closed to the public. You can only visit the outer “Sonam Dargye Protection Station,” which has an exhibition hall that gives a good overview of the reserve.
⏰ At 6 AM on the banks of Tongtian River, morning mist covers the grass like gauze, and the river reflects a pale blue light. When the wind blows, the grass waves make sound. It’s best to bring an oxygen tank as there are no supply points on the way. If you can’t handle altitude sickness, don’t push yourself. Instead, visit “Jiegu Temple” in town. The temple’s golden roof shines in the sun, overlooking the whole valley—also very impressive.
NO.8 Jilin
📍 Songhua Lake Scenic Area is about a 40-minute drive from Jilin city to the park entrance.
⏰ Boarding the boat at 4:30 PM, the lake breeze blows away the heat. The water sparkles, and the green mountains on both sides reflect like a landscape painting.
⚠️ Rime Island only has frosted trees in winter. In summer, you’ll just see ordinary trees and grass, so don’t expect otherwise.
🍜 In the city, “Old White Meat Restaurant” serves dry-fried bracken with pancakes. The fish is freshly caught Songhua River whitefish, steamed and dipped in soy sauce and ginger. It’s so tender it melts in your mouth. If you only have one day, get up early to take a boat on Songhua Lake, have fish for lunch in the city, and stroll in Beishan Park in the afternoon for a perfect ending.
These 8 places are all safe bets in July. If you only have three days off, I recommend heading to Xing'an League or Wenshan first—they have low travel costs and dense experiences. Share in the comments which one excites you most?
