It became a square only in the 1960s after the construction of the Molitovsky Bridge, and was named after the Komsomol members in 1971. 8. Saint Petersburg, Constitution Square (40,100 sq.m) Located in the Moskovsky District. It emerged in the 1960s as part of a grand master plan that, unfortunately, was never realized. You can do this from the top of the Peak. Yes, it’s a tourist "must-do," but if everyone does it, maybe they’re onto something? · Pro tip: The Peak Tram is a "falling skyscrapers" ride. Leningradskaya Street - the main pedestrian street of the city. Here you'll find souvenirs, bakeries, sculptures, and more. Kuibyshev, Frunze, Chapayevskaya, Samarskaya, Molodogvardeyskaya, and Lev Tolstoy Streets - these streets are home to most of the city's landmarks, museums, and, most importantly, wooden carvings and beautiful houses. Be prepared to see some buildings in disrepair, abandoned, or boarded up. However, many are still in good condition and worth a look. It's beautiful any time of year, with sandy beaches and the wide Volga River. Collect all the figurines of the Shishig-Letuns, mythical creatures that gather moonlight. One of the central ones is located at Leningradskaya Street, 23. Across from it, you'll find the Main Post Office with Letun figurines on the mailbox. This place is on the opposite bank of the Volga River, within the Samarskaya Luka National Park. There, you can climb a couple of low hills and enjoy the views. There's also the Repin Museum, where he painted the famous "Barge Haulers on the Volga." I would say that Samara can easily compete with Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, cities I dearly love. Here are my ideas for an unforgettable vacation: 🍺 1. Go to "the Bottom." This is what the Zhigulevsky Brewery is called in Samara. It has a long history—the company was founded in the 19th century by the Austrian aristocrat Alfred von Wacano. The beer is brewed excellently and served right there in the "Na Dne" bar, where it flows through an underground pipeline directly from the production facilities. Be sure to take a souvenir photo with the monument to the Samara brewer and rub his nose for good luck. 🏖️ 2. Stroll along the longest river embankment in Russia – the promenade stretches 4.5 km along the Volga. There's also an observation deck on the roof. A single ticket costs 600 rubles, an audio guide costs 300 rubles, and a Soviet-style lunch costs 500 rubles. 🎨 4. See the Volga expanses through the eyes of an artist. In 50 minutes and for 800 rubles, the high-speed hydrofoil "Valdai" will take you from the city center to the village of Shiryaevo. It was here that artist Ilya Repin painted sketches for his painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga." In the 150 years since the masterpiece was created, the village has noticeably transformed—its landscaped embankment is the envy of even the capitals. In the heart of Samara (formerly Kuybyshev), beneath the Academy of Culture building, lies a seemingly inconspicuous site—Stalin's Bunker. Reaching a depth of 37 meters, it’s equivalent to a 12-story building buried deep underground! Fascinating facts about this facility: ◾️Built in 1942: Construction took place under the strictest secrecy from February to October. ◾️Kuybyshev as the USSR's 2nd capital: In October 1941, as German forces closed in on Moscow, the Soviet government, the Supreme Soviet, and the entire diplomatic corps were urgently evacuated to Kuybyshev. ◾️Top-secret project: The bunker was completed in just 9 months. Neighbors believed routine renovations were happening behind the fence. Tons of excavated dirt were hauled away exclusively at night using covered trucks labeled "Bread." ◾️The builders: The core crew consisted of subway builders from Moscow and Kharkiv, along with miners from the Donbas. In total, around 3,700 people worked around the clock on the site. ◾️Sworn to secrecy: Every worker signed a lifelong non-disclosure agreement. Even today, the construction techniques remain partially classified, and the identities of most workers and engineers are still a secret. ◾️Its true purpose: The bunker was designed as a backup headquarters for the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. The interior was modeled closely after Joseph Stalin's Kremlin office. However, during the darkest days of the war, Stalin chose to remain in Moscow and never actually set foot in the Samara bunker. ◾️Civil defense readiness: Engineered with immense structural integrity, the bunker is shielded by three meters of solid concrete and a sand cushion. It remains an active civil defense facility, capable of operating in total isolation for up to 5 days, offering protection against radiation and gas attacks. ◾️Digital blackout: Thanks to the massive layers of concrete and earth, you’ll lose all cell service down here. The only exception is MegaFon—the carrier went out of its way to install equipment inside the subterranean halls. This might be the most magical night I had in Samara. The State Philharmonic ran a candlelight concert, hundreds of flickering candles ringing the stage while a full orchestra played in the dark 🎻. The hall itself is worth the ticket alone, a striking 1988 modernist space with a sculptural pale-wood ceiling that curls over you like a wave, and a huge pipe organ behind the players. Tip: book a balcony seat for the view straight down onto the candle-lit stage, that's where this photo is from, and arrive 15 minutes early because they dim the lights fast 🕯️. My favourite is the Kurlina House, the teal-tiled mansion with the dreamy curved doorway, now the Museum of Art Nouveau 🎨. A short walk away there's a white villa with a wild diamond-checkered roof, and a carved wooden house straight out of a fairy tale. I turned a corner in Samara and stopped dead, two red brick spires shooting up over the rooftops like something out of Cologne, not the Volga. This is the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, finished in 1906 and one of the only neo-Gothic Catholic churches you'll find this deep in Russia. Locals call it the Polish kostel. A vintage tram rattles right past the facade, and at dawn the brick glows pink against the cold sky 🌅. Go inside if you can, entry is free, and try to time your visit for one of the organ concerts, the acoustics under those pointed arches are unreal 🎶. The Volga is so wide here that the far bank dissolves into haze, and at golden hour the whole river turns to molten copper. I came down to the Samara embankment a couple of evenings in a row just to watch it happen. People were still out paddleboarding across the glassy water long after the sun dropped, their silhouettes stretched across the surface 🌊. The embankment itself is one of the longest in Russia, terraced down to the water with benches at every level, so you can keep walking and the view keeps shifting. My tip: don't leave when the sun goes down. The best colour comes fifteen or twenty minutes after, when the sky over the water goes pink and violet and the city lights start to flicker on behind you 🌇. Few people know that the famous Soviet film director was born in Samara and lived here in a communal apartment. Now, a museum on Frunze Street has bought out the rooms in this building and set up a small three-room exhibition: personal belongings, scripts, a living room with everyday items, and wartime artifacts. The museum is interactive, so you can touch many of the exhibits. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff, who are more than happy to share various facts and stories. Admission to the museum is only 150 rubles, and it's totally worth it! Just around the corner from the building is Ryazanov Square, which features quotes from his movies and a statue of the director himself sitting on a bench. You can take a seat right next to him :)

You can easily spend a whole day on Frunze Street if you're just passing through the city... For a long time, the street was called Saratovskaya. ✔️ The first thing that caught my eye was the architecture. You'll find well-preserved Art Nouveau buildings, both Catholic and Orthodox churches, and a stunning brewery and cookshop building (the inside is absolute beer chic!) ✔️ Right here, you'll also find the Aleksey Tolstoy Estate and a small square featuring a monument to the Golden Key, Buratino, and other fairy tale characters ✔️ Just across the street is a park and the museum of Eldar Ryazanov, who was born in Samara. The museum consists of 3 halls, including the communal apartment room where he lived, and exhibits with personal belongings, scripts, and cool interactive features (doorbells with movie characters' voices, phone conversations) Admission is only 150 rubles, but you can really feel how much the staff loves their creation! They'll share a ton of interesting facts and stories, explaining every single exhibit! The restoration of one of the most intriguing and unique Art Nouveau buildings in Samara—the summer house of the merchant Konstantin Golovkin—has recently been completed. The owner actually designed it himself, which is why it turned out so extraordinarily distinctive. In front of the house, you'll find sculptures of elephants—animals that have never lived in this region. The porch is guarded by a nymph surrounded by flowers. The dacha is perched on the high bank of the Volga River, making it a perfect spot in the summer to watch boats, yachts, and barges sail by. Inside, there is a small museum dedicated to the owner's life. Konstantin Golovkin was the very first person in Samara to own a car back in the early 20th century, and you can see a model of that vehicle in the first exhibition hall. Strolling around the estate grounds is completely free of charge. City bus No. 91 drops you off right at the front gates.
